I tried on 13 Walmart dresses under $40 — if you're in your 40s or 50s, these styles are seriously good

Yahoo11-05-2025
I'm a Walmart mom. If you know me, you'll know I'm at the store at least twice a week, getting everything from cucumbers to caulking supplies.
As a mom of two in my late 40s, I'm usually in a hurry and laser-focused on my shopping list. But last week, while I was there replenishing the kids' school snacks supply, the clothing section caught my eye — and I had to make a pit stop to try on some of Walmart's affordable dresses for spring and summer 2025.
I tried on 13 Walmart dresses — all under $40 — that I'm thinking about buying. I was surprised by the quality, comfort and fuss-free nature of these maxis, shirt dresses and more, which makes them a great choice for everything from school drop offs to summer travel. Scroll down to see how these cute dresses look on a real-life 48-year-old mom who's always on the go.
I was first introduced to Mexx in 2003 when I lived in New York City, and have been a fan ever since. This 100 per cent cotton dress even has seam pockets. The fact that Walmart now carries one of my favourite brands is another reason to shop there — not that I really needed one.
$35 at Walmart
I love the black/tan colour combo of this draped calf-length dress. The gathered waistband helps give it shape, while the V-neck front and elastic sleeves provide a more tailored look. It's also available in a green and black colourway, but I wasn't as impressed with how it looked on.
$29 at Walmart
I like the tie belt that comes with this knee-length navy cotton poplin dress, but I might switch it out for a woven brown belt for a dressier look. It does wrinkle easily, so keep a steamer on hand when you're planning to wear it. I tried on a medium, as that was the smallest size they had in stock at that location, and it fit my smaller frame quite well.
$37 at Walmart
I'm totally devoted to this Devoted dress! It's super cute, hugs in all the right places and even has pockets. If I had to take one dress with me for a weekend away, this navy number would most definitely be it.
$35 at Walmart
The quality of this Mexx eyelet dress exceeded my expectations. I loved the look of the smocked bodice and puffed sleeves, and of course, the seam pockets perfected the look. I'm sold on the blue — but if that's not your colour, it also comes in red.
$40 at Walmart
The moment I put this dress on, I knew I had to have it. How cute would it look with some cowboy boots? I could also pair it with my favourite sandals for a fresh spring look.
$40 at Walmart
I'm not usually a big fan of stripes, but this T-shirt dress won me over. It's super soft and wrinkle-free, and is an easy on-the-go look I'll be living in once the temperature warms up.
$20 at Walmart
Oh, Mexx, you've done it again. This collared button-down dress is casual comfort at its finest. And, yes, it's another one with pockets! I'm wearing an extra small and it's a bit bagger than I'd like — so I'd pair it with a thick brown belt for a bit of added cinching.
$35 at Walmart
Everything about this cute and comfortable dress says "low maintenance mama." And for $20, I might as well get it in both colourways.
$20 at Walmart
The soft fabric of this 100 per cent cotton denim dress felt great on. It's super cute and falls mid calf, making it flattering regardless of how tall you are.
$29 at Walmart
I adore the lace bodice and adjustable spaghetti straps of this sexy summer dress. This true-to-size flowy dress is fun and flattering.
$35 at Walmart
Do you know what busy moms love? Low-maintenance A-line like this one! The thick straps and the smocked bodice provide a secure fit, while the frock's all-over print will also easily disguise stains from my five-year-old when he inevitably uses the dress to wipe his face on.
$30 at Walmart
This super cute sweatshirt dress will come in handy on chilly summer nights up north at the cottage. And come fall and winter, I can also wear it with tights and chunky boots on ski weekends with the kids. It runs large, and I am wearing an XS, so keep that in mind before you purchase.
$24 at Walmart

Parenting and Textile Experts Love These 17 Kids' Clothing Brands

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." We updated this article in July 2025 to include updated information and expert advice about each brand. We replaced some brands and added new ones like Tea Collection and Pixie Lane. If you've ever found the perfect item for a kid, only to find out that they hate that color or refuse to wear long pants anymore, you know that clothes shopping for kids can be overwhelming. It requires knowing what's on trend for their age group, plus finding the right size for their growing bodies (all while trying to stay on a budget). Luckily, our parenting experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute review kids' products of all kinds, while our Textiles Lab covers all things fabric-based, from kids' pajamas to organic sheets. During the reviewing process, they take into account fabric quality, price and styles offered to ease of purchasing and fit. This list is made up of our experts' favorite brands, including ones they purchase for their own Cat & Jack line is a favorite among parents, with trendy styles that go up to sizes for teens and tweens. Lexie Sachs, GH Institute Executive Director, loves the affordability of the Cat & Jack line. "My kids love wearing their Cat & Jack items, often choosing them over other pricier options in their closet," she says. However, she does note that the fabric wears down and abrades over time. $12.00 at to Walmart to grab everything from denim skirts to pom pom hats under their kids' clothing line, Wonder Nation. Our pros found that the prices here are significantly lower than other value brands without having to sacrifice style or attention to detail. Plus, when you get a Walmart+ subscription, shipping is free, among a host of other benefits. You can find everything from shorts and tees to special occasion outfits and accessories, with almost every item is under $30. While we found the materials can feel a bit flimsier than some of our other picks, the value simply can't be beat. $15.98 at offers high-quality essentials in bold colors, with none of the glitter, slogans or licensed characters — all at affordable prices in sizes up to 14Y. Our pros love that you can buy a variety of gender-neutral styles that are colorful and exciting. The styles are great for mixing and matching with each other. We particularly like their swimsuits and rash guard tops for preventing sunburn. One thing to keep in mind is that if your little one is into trendy designs, you might have a bit of trouble finding their favorite characters or styles as this store primarily offers an assortment of basics. $16.50 at more basics, Carter's is an affordable place to stock up on bodysuits for babies, socks and affordable outfits for kids up to size 14. The brand's clothes can be found at many different retailers making it easy for you to snag your favorites no matter where you live or shop. If you're looking for some everyday options for your very little ones, Carter's has you covered. $18.00 at cartersJanie and Jack has a wonderful assortment of high-quality, keepsake styles. While our pros particularly recommend them for special events, they also have a great variety of everyday styles. We particularly like their collection inspired by Disney Princesses that make it possible for your kids to wear a Moana dress to important events while still looking appropriate. This brand does run a bit pricier than other options, but for the quality of the pieces and timeless styles, it's well worth it. Sizes run from ages 0-12 years. $69.00 at you deal exclusively in Kohl's Cash, this may be the kids' clothing brand for you. Jumping Beans is Kohl's private label, similar to Cat & Jack at Target. This brand excels when it comes to exciting and fun graphics, and our pros found the graphic styles to be more unique and less cheesy than some other options. They're perfect for that picky budding fashionista in your family. They also tend to have some good sales and offer a wide variety of styles, colors and cuts. $8.99 at lots of great styles to choose from at affordable prices, Old Navy is a great shop to browse every once in a while to refresh their wardrobes for the season. While most of the styles tend to be a bit more basic, our pros appreciate the variety of great daily essentials like loungewear, T-shirts and jeans. This store is a great option to grow with your little one since they offer sizes and styles for infants all the way through to adulthood. If your kids wear school uniforms, they've also got a great selection of colors and essentials at an affordable price. $16.19 at has trendy clothes for babies and kids up to size 14. While these pieces are a bit more expensive than some of the other brands, you are paying for in-fashion styles, much like you would with Zara's adult clothing. Our pros particularly like that these clothes have really nice attention to detail, so they're more elevated with special features like embroidered designs, eyelets and vibrant colors. If your kids tend to run petite, we noticed that Zara clothes tend to run a bit large so you might want to size down. $49.90 at zaraFor a more classic, polished look, J. Crew's children's line, Crewcuts, has everything your mini-me needs to look like the most stylish version of themselves. While our experts have found that this line is pricier than other children's options, the brand tends to have some great (and frequent) sales that we recommend taking advantage of. This is where you can find a kid's cashmere sweater or wool coat. You won't find a plethora of licensed graphic tees here, but the tasteful pieces will have you coming back for more, especially for special occasions. $105.00 at jcrewH&M offers trendy styles and fun pieces for the whole family. These on-trend clothes are priced well, so it's a good one to hit up the next time they hit a growth spurt and need a big closet replenishment. Our experts have found licensed character designs amongst H&M's racks, as well as great seasonal options. We notice a lot of the pants have drawstring waistbands, which is great for growing kids. While it isn't the highest quality option on our list, we've rarely had any issues with the materials. $44.99 at hmWith sizes that go up to kids' XXL, you never have to worry that your kids have outgrown the Gap. Plus, they often have graphic T-shirts and dresses with your kids' favorite characters so you can stay up to date with what's trendy. Our pros particularly love that while Gap has pieces for all ages, they have different styles designed for each phase, unlike some other brands that make the same designs for a wide age range. Because of this, you can rest assured that the designs are more age appropriate, and you don't have to worry about putting your kids in shirts that feel too baby-ish or too old. $8.00 at those who want an organic option, Hanna Andersson's clothes are made from soft, cotton that will feel great on your little one's skin. In addition to their own colorful patterns, you can find clothes with characters from Disney (including Pixar and Marvel), Dr. Seuss, Sesame Street and Curious George up to size 18. Our pros recommend taking a look through their adorable PJ section — what they're best known for — but note that they have cute styles for all types of clothes, especially for younger ages. You can also snag some adorable matching family sets so you and your little ones can wear the same pajamas or holiday looks. $17.99 at some of your favorite brands and looks for less than half the price by shopping secondhand at ThredUp. Our experts note that ThredUp is a great option for parents since all the pieces are inspected thoroughly before they're listed on their website. There are some especially good deals on gently-used items, and we've also found that ThredUp's website is easy and intuitive to use. Editor's note: Keep an eye out for current safety standards when buying secondhand. Avoid pull-tie hoodies for little kids, and be on the lookout for buttons that they could choke on. $35.00 at unique styles you'll find at Appaman are like no other and will have your kid sporting the coolest looks in school. Our pros particularly recommend their puffy winter coats that come in fun metallic colors or their cute bomber jackets that are available in a variety of styles and patterns. The pieces are whimsical and stylish, and while a bit more expensive than some other options on this list, they're made of high-quality materials that will last you longer than cheaper brands. Plus, if you keep an eye out, this brand tends to have some great sales, and our pros have had good luck finding some cute pieces. $155.00 at global-minded gets its design inspiration from all over the world. They've got some really unique gender-neutral graphic print tees and adorable pajama sets. They also make great pieces for layering — our experts love their cardigans specifically as they are ultra-soft. (Our only wish is that they made them in adult sizes!) $39.00 at they spend their entire time on the soccer field, or are constantly on the run, they need clothes that can stand up to a lot of wear-and-tear. Nike's performance gear powers some of the best athletes in the world, and this quality extends to items made for kids. They can outfit your kids from head-to-toe, with hats, tees, shorts, socks, sneakers and accessories. $44.00 at they like the style and sparkle of a store like Justice, and you like quality that will last until they've outgrown it, Pixie Lane is the way to go. Our experts say that their clothing is super soft and comfortable, which is always a necessity for active kids. It can get a little expensive, especially for some of their foil dresses, but if you look for warehouse sales during shopping holidays, you can stock up and make your money stretch. $28.00 at product experts — including shopping experts and fiber scientists and engineers — have spent years researching and reviewing kids' clothing firsthand. Here are the attributes our analysts consider when selecting which brands to recommend: Comfort: First and foremost, children need to feel good in the clothing they put on. Our pros look for clothing that where kid testers aren't bothered by the fabrics, tags or any embellishments. Durability: Kids put their clothes through the wringer, so our Lab pros consider whether the clothes pill or rip through general wear and tear. Washability: The last thing parents need to deal with is a high-maintenance garment that requires dry cleaning or hand washing. We recommend garments that could stand up to easy machine washing. Cost: Our shopping experts considered a wide range of price points, but primarily focused on more affordable options since kids outgrow their clothing so quickly. Style: We focused on brands with a vast range of designs to incorporate options for every kid's (and parent's!) preference. Convenience: Whether you prefer to shop online or in stores, the buying process should be easy. We considered widely available brands as well as online retailers with user-friendly experiences. Ease of use: Clothing should be easy for kids to get on and off themselves. We considered options for self-dressing that can help foster independence at all ages. Sustainability: Last but not least, we considered whether the stores have any sustainable attributes, from the use of organic materials to corporate initiatives around their environmental decades, the Good Housekeeping Institute has been providing expert reviews and advice on everything a parent needs, including kids' clothing brands. As Senior Parenting & Relationships Editor, Marisa LaScala covers everything from the latest parenting advice to kids' TV shows, and vetted many of the picks in this guide Angel Madison, a commerce editor who is also a mom, updated this guide in June 2025. She worked with Marisa and Lexie Sachs, the Executive Director of Strategy & Operations at the GH Institute to include the most trusted brands that have been researched and tested. Walmart makes drastic change to fight theft amid worrying trend

It's hard to believe that just a few years ago, many of us still shopped the old-fashioned way. We'd get dressed (typically in pants without elastic waistbands), grab our phone, keys and wallet, and drive the 10-15 minute trip to our local big-box store. Related: Popular retail chain quietly closes over 100 stores There, we'd get the usual supplies. Groceries, tech equipment, pet supplies, household products, and school or office materials were most common. Sometimes, if we were were feeling spontaneous, we'd pick up some fun purchases, like cosmetics, clothing, pool or beach equipment during the summer, or holiday decor during the chillier months. How times have changed. These days, many of us shop online for the things we need. A Bank of America survey in late 2023 found that 42% of respondents in the U.S. claim they plan to spend more money online over the next year. This is partly because it's just easier to shop online now. Many of us hold at least one membership to a big retailer. It could be Amazon Prime (which boasts over 220 million members), Walmart+, or Target Circle 360. All three offer fast shipping, typically low prices, and unbeatable convenience. And even if you do have to wait a day or two for your package to arrive, at least you didn't have to put jeans on to get it. Image source: Shutterstock E-commerce providers have made ordering online almost unbeatably easy. And their services are pervasive. "Bank of America's survey also noted that 61% of respondents said they plan to shop for their groceries online. Over a quarter (27%) of respondents said Walmart was their preferred grocery website, followed by Amazon (19%) and Instacart (10%), according to the report," Retail Dive reports. Shopping for food and staples online is a relatively new habit, thanks in part to Covid, which saw many supermarkets shut down or severely limit capacity. More Retail: Lowe's launches massive early answer to Amazon Prime DayTarget has new plan to win back customers with big savingsHome Depot makes clear statement amid boycott threatsFamous retail chain makes two more alarming store closures And many of us have stuck with online retailers to procure our daily essentials. But as foot traffic drops, other issues pervade the retail space. Theft and organized retail crime have spiked over the past five years. The National Retail Federation says that in 2023, retailers saw a 93% jump in theft compared to 2019 levels. This is partly because many retailers are operating at reduced capacity. Most retailers employ fewer staff, since labor is costly and harder to come by. Less oversight often allows theft and other crimes to increase, especially when automated checkouts are used. So Walmart (WMT) has been taking steps to prevent theft in stores. TikTok user @LadyLuckk posted a TikTok video reporting her local Walmart had even locked up socks to prevent shoplifting. "Welcome to Walmart. You can't even get socks because it's locked," she explains in her post. Related: Starbucks unveils perfect answer to Chick-fil-A, Wendy's drinks The video shows a long wall display of different socks all kept locked up behind plexiglass shields. Walmart, for its part, says it takes different theft prevention measures on a store-by-store basis, depending on need and incidence level. In April, a Walmart Supercenter in Shrewsbury, Mo., completely did away with its self-checkouts because theft at the store was hurting business. The measure worked. Between January-May 2025, calls to the police reporting theft and shoplifting decreased to 11% of calls overall - about a reduction by half. Arrests were down, too. Are Megan Thee Stallion and Klay Thompson Dating?

Let's be real—every summer since Megan Thee Stallion's debut on the music scene has officially been Hot Girl Summer. And according to speculation across the web, things are possibly heating up this summer between Meg and NBA player Klay Thompson. How have fans jumped to this conclusion, you ask? When the 'Realer' rapper posted a steamy Instagram photo dump promoting her Hot Girl Summer swimwear line at Walmart, eagle-eyed scrollers noticed a guy lounging in the back of one of her they're convinced that it's the Dallas Mavericks athlete. 'Wait, is that Klay just casually chilling?😂😂' one person commented under her post, while another was much more blunt in their assumption on social media, saying, 'MEGAN IS DATING KLAY THOMPSON???!' Others weren't as convinced that the stars could be a couple. 'That's the Klay clone from eBay,' someone added. Someone else shared a theory tied to the athlete's build, writing, 'Now that I look, Klay doesn't skip leg day and this dude has twigs.' Before this maybe-romance, the 'Savage' artist was most recently linked to another NBA star, Torrey Craig. The two hard-launched their relationship back in August 2024 with a 'couples challenge' TikTok, but things have seemingly fizzled out since then. As for Klay's dating history, he had a high-profile romance with Laura Harrier from 2018 to 2020 and was reportedly linked to Coco Jones from 2021 to 2023. Neither Meg nor Klay has commented on their relationship status, but we're staying tuned to see if this was really a soft-launch.
