Egyptian thriller ‘The Settlement' nabs award at MiWorld Young Film Festival

Broadcast Pro02-04-2025
The social thriller is Mohamed Rashad's first narrative feature, following his 2016 documentary 'Little Eagles'.
Egyptian filmmaker Mohamed Rashad's workplace thriller, The Settlement, has won the Audience Award at the MiWorld Young Film Festival, an event dedicated to showcasing cinema from Africa, Asia and Latin America in schools to foster intercultural dialogue and global awareness through film.
Inspired by true events, The Settlement tells the story of two brothers—23-year-old Hossam and his 12-year-old sibling Maro—who, after their father's fatal workplace accident, are offered jobs at the local factory in lieu of their family seeking legal recourse. As they integrate into their new environment, unsettling questions arise about the true nature of their father's death.
Rashad, a native of Alexandria whose father worked in textile factories for over four decades, was moved by a real-life account of a law graduate whose family was pressured into waiving their legal rights following a similar tragedy. Seeing a powerful opportunity to explore workplace safety violations and exploitative labour practices, Rashad transformed this story into a tense and thought-provoking cinematic experience.
The Settlement features Adham Shukr, Ziad Islam, Hajar Omar, Mohamed Abdel Hady and Emad Ghoneim. The film's visuals are crafted by cinematographer Mahmoud Lotfi, while editor Heba Othman—known for her work on the acclaimed Sudanese film Goodbye Julia—brings the story to life through editing.
Produced through an international collaboration spanning Egypt, France, Germany, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, The Settlement is led by producer Hala Lotfy of Hassala Films (Cairo) alongside co-producers Etienne de Ricaud of Caractères Productions (Paris), Kesmat Elsayed of Seera Films GmbH (Berlin) and ART (Jeddah). The film's worldwide sales are managed by MAD World, with MAD Distribution handling its release in the Arab world.
During its development, The Settlement garnered support from numerous international funding bodies, including the Berlinale World Cinema Fund, IFFR's Hubert Bals Fund Script and Development Initiative, Hubert Bals Plus Co-Production Minority Support, Doha Film Institute, Arab Fund for Arts and Culture, Red Sea Development Fund, Fonds Image De La Francophonie, and El Gouna Film Festival's CineGouna Platform.

This choice comes in recognition of his distinguished stature within the Arab theatre scene, his role as a leading intellectual reference, and his active contribution to shaping the theatrical landscape in Egypt and the Arab world. A Pivotal Figure in Egyptian, Arab, and International Theatre Dr Sameh Mahran, born in Cairo in 1954, earned his PhD in 1989 with a thesis titled "The Concept of War in Arab Theatre." Mahran is the author of numerous plays, studies, and influential books, and has translated many key academic sources. A Constellation of Influential Theatre Makers With this message, which he will deliver at the opening of the 16th Arab Theatre Festival—organised by the ATI in collaboration with Egypt's Ministry of Culture from January 10 to 16, 2026—Sameh Mahran joins a constellation of influential theatre makers who have penned these messages from 2008 through 2025. These figures have crafted pages lit by the light of knowledge and the fire of experience, envisioning the future with an awareness rooted in the present and its pressing questions. Ismail Abdullah: Mahran Is a Valuable Intellectual and Creative Addition Secretary-General of the Arab Theatre Institute, Ismail Abdullah, expressed his pride in Dr Sameh Mahran and the profound intellectual and creative presence he represents. Mahran, he said, is a creative academic whose contributions span multiple dimensions of the theatrical process and whose influence reaches across all Arab theatre landscapes. Abdullah considered Mahran's addition to the group of message-bearers a valuable intellectual and creative contribution to the legacy of visionaries who have shaped deep perspectives—starting with Yacoub Al Shadrawi in 2008 and including other significant names that have given Arab Theatre Day profound meaning within our theatrical lives. Mahran: A Deep Personal Drive to Continue in Theatre For his part, Dr Mahran expressed his sincere gratitude to the ATI, its Secretary-General the esteemed writer Ismail Abdullah, and the Board of Trustees for choosing him to carry the message of Arab Theatre in the 16th edition of the Arab Theatre Festival in Cairo. He added that this honour is a responsibility—and that the selection serves as a powerful and deeply personal motivation to continue in the field of theatre, which he loves and is passionate about.
