The Most Important Packers: No. 16 — Evan Williams

Forbes07-07-2025
Green Bay safety Evan Williams (33) is hoping for a big second season with the Packers.
The Green Bay Packers went 11-6 last season, sweeping the NFC West and the AFC South along the way.
Overall, though, no one in the building was happy.
The Packers failed to build on their terrific finish to the 2023 campaign, settled for the No. 7 seed in the NFC playoffs, and lost a Wild Card game to eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia.
Afterwards, general manager Brian Gutekunst turned up the heat on everybody in the building.
'We need to continue to ramp up our sense of urgency,' Gutekunst said. 'I think it's time we started competing for championships.'
Those are fair expectations.
The Packers return 20 of 22 starters, and appear to have upgraded the roster via free agency and the draft. With several third and fourth year players trending upward, Green Bay should be poised to make a move.
'I think they're ready,' Gutekunst said.
Now, it's time for the Packers to prove their G.M. right.
Green Bay's first training camp practice is July 23. Between now and then I will count down the '30 Most Important Packers' heading into the 2025 campaign.
At No. 16 is safety Evan Williams.No. 16
Evan Williams, S
Last season
Williams was named to the Professional Football Writers of America (PFWA) All-Rookie team after an impressive first season.
Williams made six starts and played in 13 games as a rookie. He had an interception, forced a fumble, had three passes defensed and 47 tackles.
Williams didn't play a single snap in the Packers' Week 1 loss to Philadelphia in Brazil, and he played just 34 snaps from scrimmage in Green Bay's first four games. But he moved into the starting lineup in Week 5 and made six starts overall.
What slowed Williams were hamstring and quadriceps injuries, as well as a late-season concussion. In all, Williams missed four games and couldn't finish two others.
'He's got to continue to learn his body,' Packers coach Matt LaFleur said of Williams. 'Because I know we had, there were some injuries last year just to make sure that he's available.'Career to date
Williams played four seasons at Fresno State before transferring to Oregon in 2023.
During his five college seasons, Williams recorded 307 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 5½ sacks, four quarterback hurries, four interceptions, 16 passes defensed, four forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries.
Overall, Williams earned some type of all-conference honors each of his final four college seasons.Outlook
Williams passed fellow rookie Javon Bullard and earned a starting safety job next to Xavier McKinney after a month last season. If Williams can stay healthy, he should keep that position — and could become one of the NFL's top young safeties.
Williams posted a 71.9 grade from Pro Football Focus in his first six games of 2024. In his final seven games, though — when injuries hit — Williams had an average grade of 58.3.
Williams has the intelligence and athleticism to develop into a high level safety. The key will be staying on the field. They Said It …
'He can be as good as he wants to be. I think he has a weapon in his brain with how smart he is and how aware he is. That accelerates your ability to play early in this league because you can grasp the concepts and what we're trying to get done.' — Packers defensive backs coach Ryan Downard on Williams'I feel like I'm a guy that learns through experience, learns through being in the fire more than just sitting back and watching. I feel like each rep, each step I'm taking this year, I'm just gaining confidence, gaining experience. Honestly I'm just looking to take that step being a confident football player out there and hopefully I'll have the defense just playbook in my back pocket so I can take that next step and think about other things; think about ok what is the offense trying to do here? What is this formation telling me? I feel like I could take steps in that department and taking it a step further and becoming a more proactive player rather than just being reactive.' — Williams on having a year of experience'I think just building on what he's already done and being consistent with it again. Another guy that loves the game. He's extremely intelligent. He comes in with the right mentality. And he just works.' — Packers coach Matt LaFleur on what Williams must do to improveTHE TOP 30

Yankees 2025 MLB trade deadline buzz: New York sees Ryan McMahon as backup plan to Eugenio Suarez

Here's the latest Yankees news and buzz ahead of the July 31 MLB trade deadline... July 23, 11:45 p.m. As the Yankees continue to search for a potential new third baseman, the team's ranking of preferred candidates has reportedly been determined. According to Mark Feinsand, the Yankees are interested in Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon. However, the team sees McMahon as a backup plan to trying to trade for Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez. Suarez is the hottest hitter this trade deadline and the Yankees are just one of many teams inquiring about him, so the price tag may be too high for New York. YES Network's Jack Curry spoke about the Yankees' thoughts on the thirdbase market and poured some cold water on the names the team has been attached to. "The vibe I'm getting from the Yankees, they do not have a lot of exuberance for some of the names that have been attached to them: Suarez, [Pirates 3B Ke'Bryan] Hayes, McMahon," Curry said. "They are a very detail-oriented organization when they make these kinds of decisions." Curry criticized Suarez's defense and his fit on the team while also pointing out the contracts and lack of offense from Hayes and McMahon as potential reasons the Yankees don't acquire them. Hayes' contract still has five years of control at $30 million while McMahon is under contract through 2027 with $32 million remaining after this season. July 19, 8:27 p.m. The Yankees are in the market for a third baseman and have reportedly shown interest in the top target at this trade deadline. According to the New York Post's Jon Heyman, the Yankees are among the teams that have inquired about Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez. Other teams include the Marinerrs and Cubs, among "many others."

New Jersey Little Leaguer suspended for bat flip, a celebration governing body promotes

A 12-year-old Little Leaguer is 'distraught' at the prospect of missing his team's first state tournament game because he was suspended for flipping his bat after hitting a game-winning home run — a type of celebration Little League Baseball promotes on its social media accounts. Marco Rocco of Haddonfield, New Jersey tossed his bat in the air on July 16 after his sixth-inning, two-run homer in the final of the sectional tournament, his father, Joe Rocco told The Associated Press on Wednesday. At first, he was called out, but on appeal the runs counted, Marco was ejected and suspended for a game over what the family was told were actions deemed 'unsportsmanlike' and 'horseplay.' Now, his family has gone to court to seek an emergency temporary restraining order that will allow him to play in the New Jersey state tournament that starts on Thursday. 'All we're asking for is that the suspension be lifted so he can play in the game,' Joe Rocco said. The sides are scheduled to make their arguments before a judge in Gloucester County Chancery Division on Thursday afternoon, just hours before the game. The winner of the state tournament advances to the regionals, where they have a chance to move on to the Little League World Series. What makes the ejection and suspension so confounding is that Little League Baseball posts videos of bat-flip celebrations on social media that do not result in punishment. In fact, Marco has tossed his bat in celebration in prior tournament games without warnings or punishment, according to the court complaint. Joe Rocco called that hypocritical. 'They promote bat flips. The kids see major leaguers doing it. It's part of the game. He was just emulating what he saw," he said. The incident left his son 'distraught.' 'He was so confused,' the father said. 'He didn't understand what was going on. On the car ride home he was saying 'How can that be against the rules? If I knew I was breaking the rules I never would have done it.'' A message seeking comment was left with Little League's East Region headquarters after business hours on Wednesday night. ___ AP sports: Mark Pratt, The Associated Press

Harper hits 350th career homer, 4 teammates also go deep in Phillies' loss to the Red Sox

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bryce Harper hit the 350th homer of his career and four Phillies teammates also went deep Wednesday night, yet it wasn't enough for Philadelphia to beat the Boston Red Sox. Harper's milestone home run came in the first inning off Boston starter Lucas Giloito. He hit a first pitch fastball into the second deck in right field at Citizens Bank Park. The 439-foot homer run was his longest since a 451-foot blast on Sept. 23, 2023, against the New York Mets. 'It's pretty awesome,' Harper said after the Phillies' 9-8, 11-inning loss to Boston. 'On an individual note, I'm super happy about it. But I always want to win, obviously, and not getting the win was pretty tough.' The homer was the hardest hit ball of the season for Harper, who has begun to look like his former MVP self in recent weeks. In his last 10 games, the 32-year-old slugger has 16 hits, 14 for extra bases, including five home runs. He became the 105th player in MLB history to reach 350 homers in a career and is the eighth active player to accomplish the feat. He is also the youngest in that group of eight to reach that milestone. Despite the loss, the Phillies can take some solace that the offense has been starting to drive the ball with more authority since the All-Star break. 'It's disappointing (to lose)' Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. 'But the offense was good tonight.' Harper's homer came right after a home run by Kyle Schwarber, who has gone deep four times in the last six games and ranks third in the NL with 34 homers. Nick Castellanos, Bryson Stott and J.T. Realmuto also homered in the loss for the Phillies. Realmuto's homer was his first against a left-handed pitcher this season. Stott also doubled, playing in a game after his wife gave birth to their second child, a son, earlier on Wednesday. 'It was a big night for the offense,' Harper said. 'I thought we've swung the bat well all series. I thought we had some great at-bats. I'm super pumped for (Stott) obviously, having a baby at 3:45 in the morning, not getting much rest and then coming in and (doing what he did in the game) - that's baseball. I swear it happens every time.' ___ AP MLB:
