Banknotes are getting a new design - here's how they've changed over time
Bank of England banknotes have showcased notable historical figures since 1970, when William Shakespeare became the first person - other than the monarch - to feature.
However, the Bank says there are many ways to represent the UK on banknotes, and six potential themes have been identified for its upcoming 'H' series of notes.
They are:
notable historical figures
architecture and landmarks
arts, culture and sport
noteworthy events in history
innovation, and
nature.
The public can also suggest other themes for the Bank to consider by 31 July.
UK banknotes have evolved dramatically, from paper to polymer and from Shakespeare's debut in 1970 to modern figures like Alan Turing.
As the Bank prepares to introduce King Charles' portrait on the new series, it highlights how banknotes have changed over the years – in terms of size, shape, value and what they are made.
However, for more than 60 years, one constant has been the late Queen Elizabeth II's image featuring on every note since 1960.
Her likeness has evolved from Robert Austin's youthful depiction to Roger Withington's 1990 portrait and been a cornerstone of modern designs.

Lewis Capaldi and Lorde top UK charts after Glastonbury performances
Singers Lewis Capaldi and Lorde have topped the UK charts after their performances at Glastonbury, the Official Charts Company said. Alternative pop star Lorde's new record Virgin reached number one on the album chart after she performed all 11 tracks at a secret set at the Woodsies stage on Saturday. Scottish singer Capaldi also made an emotional return to the Somerset festival last weekend, performing his new song Survive which has since gone to number one on the singles chart. Capaldi performed a 35-minute set at the Pyramid stage, two years after struggling to manage his Tourette syndrome symptoms while singing on the same stage. Speaking to Official Charts, Capaldi thanked fans who had streamed and downloaded Survive, saying it 'really means the world'. 'I've been away for a little while, and to come back to this outpouring of love and support has been absolutely incredible. 'I can't thank everybody enough for all the kind words since Glastonbury – and now this. 'It's been the best week of my life,' he said. Speaking to the festival crowd on Saturday, he said: 'It's so good to be back. I'm not going to say much up here today, because if I do, I think I will probably start crying. 'But it's just amazing to be here with you all, and I can't thank you all enough for coming out and coming and seeing me. 'Second time's a charm on this one, everybody. 'It's just a short set today, but I just wanted to come and kind of finish what I couldn't finish the first time round.' Introducing Survive at the festival, Capaldi became visibly emotional as he said: 'The last two years haven't been the best for me, it's been difficult at times. 'This has been my f****** goal, to get back here,' he added. He ended his performance with Somebody You Loved, the track that Glastonbury crowds helped him to sing when he struggled with his Tourette symptoms in 2023. The condition causes you to make sudden, repetitive sounds or movements and while there is no cure, treatment can help manage the tics, according to the NHS website. Virgin is Lorde's fourth studio album, and her previous three, Pure Heroine (2013), Melodrama (2017) and Solar Power (2021) all reached the top 10 of the UK albums chart. Lorde, 28, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Connor, took to the Woodsies stage at Glastonbury on Saturday to perform the album in full to the packed tent and a crowd gathered outside. The New Zealand-born singer pulled her top off to finish with a double hit of Ribs from her debut album Pure Heroine, which she said was first played at Glastonbury in 2017, and Melodrama's Green Light, during which the lasers turned from blue to green. The final song prompted a football terrace-style singalong that almost drowned out Lorde herself. She is best known for songs such as Homemade Dynamite, Solar Power and her second single Royals, which reached number one in the UK singles chart.

Oasis setlist for reunion tour revealed at Cardiff concert
The setlist for Oasis' reunion tour across the UK and Ireland has been revealed following the first show in Cardiff on Friday (July 4). After 16 years, Oasis is finally back! Noel and Liam Gallagher took to the stage at Cardiff's Principality Stadium on Friday (July 4) in what was their first gig together in 16 years. The performance was the first show in their long-awaited reunion tour (Live '25) - which will also see them perform in locations including London, Manchester and Edinburgh. The brothers, who had not performed together since their dramatic split in 2009, blasted through their setlist, kicking off with Hello, from their second album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? During the gig, Liam apologised to fans for how long it had taken for them to reunite. The five key West Midlands events happening this weekend bringing thousands of people to the region
Culture bosses have forecasted that the 'super weekend' of events in July, including Black Sabbath's Birmingham farewell, will pump millions into the local economy. The West Midlands Growth Company has projected that the region's visitor economy could see a surge of up to £20 million. They expect as many as 300,000 fans flocking to the region at the start of July, providing a much-needed boost for the hospitality sector. Utilita Arena Birmingham and bp pulse LIVE's boss Jen Mitchell was equally upbeat, saying: "Welcoming thousands of fans to the city is what we do best – but hosting Brummie legends ELO makes this weekend particularly special. "With major moments also happening across the city, from Black Sabbath at Villa Park to the Test Match at Edgbaston, it's a real showcase of Birmingham's strength as a large-scale live events destination." Kelsey Dwyer, Partnerships and Events Manager at Colmore BID, is over the moon about the Colmore Food Festival making its comeback to Birmingham's Victoria Square for this July Super Weekend: "We're thrilled to bring Colmore Food Festival back to the heart of Birmingham in Victoria Square this July Super Weekend." She pointed out the festival's enticing features, saying: "With over 30 incredible local food and drink venues, capped menu prices, and a buzzing, family-friendly atmosphere, it's the perfect way to soak up the city's buzzing atmosphere." Dwyer also touched on the wide-ranging appeal of the event: "Whether you want to fuel up before the big gig, soak in the rock 'n' roll vibes or get your metal-inspired face paints, there's something for everyone." Wrapping up, she extended an open invitation: "Come hungry, leave happy – and don't forget to request your favourite metal tune with our on-stage entertainers while you're at it!".
