But then the curveball came when Garfield dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, leaving just nine weeks before filming to completely recast and redesign one of horror's most legendary figures.
The timing couldn't have been worse. Del Toro told Vanity Fair:
'Andrew Garfield stepping out and Jacob coming in. I mean, it was like Jacob is the most perfect actor for the creature, and we have a supernaturally good connection.
'It's like, very few words. Very few things I have to say, and he does it… We recast, and we had nine weeks [to get the look down]. You can't be under more pressure than that.'
Enter Jacob Elordi, who not only stepped into the role with confidence but impressed Hill with his unique physicality and quiet intensity.
'What attracted me to him was his gangliness and his wrists. It was this looseness. Then he has these real somber moments where he watches you really deftly, and his eyelids are low, with the long lashes like Karloff.
'I was like, 'I don't know who else you could get with a physicality like this.' His demeanor is innocent, but it's encompassed in a six-foot-five frame. He could really do a lot of damage if this man really wanted to be a bad guy.'
Despite the disappointment, Garfield has no hard feelings. In a previous interview, he said:
'Meeting Jacob felt really serendipitous so that I could really see and hear that, 'No, maybe he needed that experience more than me.' That was cool, to feel that he had a really spectacular time on that job.'
Del Toro's Frankenstein is already creating buzz ahead of its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where it will screen in competition and potentially earn him another Golden Lion following his win with The Shape of Water . The film will have a limited theatrical run before it hits Netflix in November.
So while it may have started with a major setback, Frankenstein seems poised to become another haunting, visionary chapter in del Toro's filmography.

Netflix Breaks A Rule With ‘Untamed' Season 2
Untamed Well, I've previously said that if a show performs well enough, it can expand beyond just being a planned-out, one-off miniseries and find renewal. And that's exactly what's just happened on Netflix. After nearly two weeks on top of its Top 10 list, Netflix has in fact broken its 'limited series' rule and has greenlit Untamed season 2, a sequel to its murder mystery series starring Eric Bana who will return, rather than this being a totally new cast with a totally new mystery. It will, however, be a new national park, indicating most of the cast besides Bana will be left behind. Bana initially seemed a bit passive when it came to the idea of Untamed season 2, saying it hadn't really been considered at the time, but now? He's pumped: 'I am absolutely thrilled that we get the chance to bring another season of 'Untamed' to life,' Eric Bana told Variety, 'The response to season 1 has been a testament to the incredible effort by our crew to deliver something truly unique. I can't wait to take Kyle on his next journey. Massive thanks to Netflix, John Wells Productions, Warner Bros. Television and our fans.' And here's co-showrunner Mark L. Smith, speaking to Netflix's blog Tudum: 'Elle and I envisioned it as a stand-alone, six episodes,' Mark L. Smith said. 'But then the more that we got into it, it was just such a great cast … it was just like, 'Oh yeah, how do we keep this going?' " Untamed I think having a 'great cast' is somewhat secondary to getting huge viewership, and Netflix saying 'ok do another season,' but the end result is the same. We also already know a bit about the plot of season 2, which will involve Bana's character heading to a different national park besides Yosemite: 'Turner was so comfortable in Yosemite,' Mark said. 'He was the one leading this charge, and people followed him. And now, [we're] putting Kyle on his back foot, making him very uncomfortable … This time we get to follow Turner into a park and let him lead us, and we stumble along with him as he's kind of finding his way.' Smith does go on to say that maybe they will try to find a way to bring some cast members back to the show, despite being in an entirely new location. The best bet would be Turner's ex-wife, whom he would likely still have a relationship with in some capacity. Many other characters ended up dead, but big supporting character, Naya Vasquez, would take a back-bending plotline to end up in the new park as anything more than a guest star. It's almost certain that season 2 is going to be a 95% new cast. There is no timeline on when Untamed season 2 will arrive. Given that this was never the plan, and they now have to come up with a new story, best guess is at least a year and a half from now, if not two years, which is streaming standard these days. A scripted project could dive deeper into her working-class beginnings, meteoric rise, and poignant relationship with René Angélil, her husband and manager who she lost years ago. There may be hesitation to make such a project, as a fictionalized version of her life was the focus of the musical movie Aline only a few years back. Janet Jackson Janet Jackson has already been the subject of a compelling documentary, and her family has spent decades in the spotlight, but hers is a story worthy of telling aside from her famous brothers. A dramatized series or movie could explore her evolution from a child star to a genre-defining icon, one who needed several tries to break out of the shadow of her siblings. While the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic – which may end up in two parts – may complicate the timing, a strong performance at the box office film could initiate demand in Hollywood for a Janet-led counterpart. Cher Cher is no stranger to theatrical portrayals, as there's already been a Broadway musical about her life, but the big screen still hasn't caught up. A biopic is reportedly in early development, with Forrest Gump screenwriter Eric Roth attached, but apparently the singer rejected the Oscar winner's first run. Whether or not he's continuing to work on the project, or if anyone else will follow in his footsteps if he decides not to, isn't clear. Stevie Nicks Fleetwood Mac's drama is legendary, but it's the tenseness between the musicians that made Rumours as incredible as it is. Stevie Nicks has always been at the band's mystical, emotional center. Her poetic lyrics, tempestuous relationships, and success as a soloist make her the ideal focal point for a scripted portrayal – and any actress would surely be thrilled to play the legend. The group's dynamics were explored in the Tony-winning play Stereophonic, but only loosely, and via fictionalized musicians, so the real story is still waiting to be told. Mariah Carey Mariah Carey's The Meaning of Mariah Carey memoir set the stage for a movie, as there's seemingly already a roadmap for a screenwriter to follow. Her history includes everything from childhood trauma to record-breaking triumphs, as well as one of the most notorious downfalls in pop music – paired with a monumental comeback. Carey has shared that a scripted adaptation is in the works with director Lee Daniels, but at the moment, there's no timeline for when the venture may come to light.
