FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Lionel Messi's Inter Miami Held By Al Ahly In Curtain Raiser
The MLS side and the Egyptian heavyweights shared the spoils in the opener of the 32-team group and knockout event.
Lionel Messi's Inter Miami were held to a goalless draw by Al Ahly in the opener of the revamped edition of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Sunday.
The MLS side and the Egyptian heavyweights shared the spoils in the opener of the 32-team group and knockout event.
Miami were without the services of full-back Jordi Alba and midfielder Yannick Bright in the opener as Javier Mascherano's men looked to the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner to make the difference. The Argentine went close multiple times, including a free kick that hit the wrong side of the net before seeing a brilliant curling effort in second-half added time tipped over the bar by the Egyptian outfit's custodian, Mohamed El Shenawy.
Miami keeper Oscar Ustari saved his side from disappointment in the first half of the game as he managed to keep out the spot kick from Egyptian Trezeguet.
Inter Miami owner and the recently knighted Sir David Beckham was in attendance at the stadium for the game alongside legendary Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.
Despite the lack of goals, the match was engaging, with Al Ahly dominating the first half before Miami significantly improved after the interval.
Al Ahly easily broke through Miami's defence in the opening minutes, and Emam Ashour was denied by Ustari after being set up by Trezeguet.
In the 31st minute, Palestine international striker Wessam Abou Ali's effort was ruled out for offside, and shortly after, his powerful shot was tipped over by Ustari.
A penalty was awarded when Telasco Segovia fouled Zizo, but Trezeguet's weak spot kick was parried away, and the former Aston Villa forward couldn't react quickly enough to the rebound.
Miami showed strength after the break, with Messi nearly scoring in the 64th minute from a free-kick that grazed the post before hitting the side-netting, tricking part of the crowd into thinking he had scored.
Inter Miami Starting XI:
Oscar Ustari, Ian Fray, Tomas Aviles, Maximiliano Falcon, Noah Allen, Tadeo Allende, Federico Redondo, Sergio Busquets, Telasco Segovia, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez
Al Ahly Starting XI:
El Shenawy, Koka, Dari, Yasser, Hany, Hamdy, Marawaan, Ben Romdhane, Emam, Trezeguet, Wessam

Mikel Arteta Gets Shoved By Spurs' Pedro Porro During Throw-In Chaos: WATCH
Last Updated: In the 59th minute of a pre-season friendly on July 31, the Hotspur defender pushed the Arsenal manager back into his designated area after he crossed the mark. A controversial incident during the North London derby match between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, July 31, saw Pedro Porro push opposition manager Mikel Arteta back into the playing arena. Even though it was a friendly encounter in Hong Kong, the game wasn't short of intense scenes, as Porro nudged Arteta back into his technical area after the Arsenal head coach left his designated position. The incident took place in the 59th minute of Spurs' 1-0 victory over Arteta's men. While taking a throw-in, Porro spotted an animated Arteta moving his hands and directing Arsenal players without realising he had crossed the mark. Just then, the Hotspur right-back went up to him and pushed him away amid a roar from the packed crowd before the referee intervened. Even though Porro's aggressive push seemed not alright against an Arsenal manager, who had merely mistaken his position, Spurs fans defended their star and crucified Arteta all over social media. Arteta's team finished their Asian trip, featuring matches against Newcastle United, AC Milan and Spurs this week. They'll now round off the pre-season by facing Villarreal and Athletic Bilbao and open their Premier League campaign against Manchester United on August 17. Despite Arsenal's defeat against Spurs, Arteta was quite confident ahead of the start of the new season. 'I'm very positive, everything that I've seen in the last 10 days gives me a lot of encouragement and we're ahead of what I was expecting in many areas," he said at the post-match press conference. 'Even though tonight's result gives you a taste, I think that is going to be very positive as well. To realise the margins that winning or not winning have to be controlled as well, and again, we go again. We'll start on Monday again with two great games at the Emirates to finalise the preparation and be ready for Old Trafford." view comments First Published: August 01, 2025, 17:27 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Marcos Rojo Kicked Off First Team! Heated Clash With Boca Juniors Manager Ensues
Last Updated: The former Red Devils player's Boca career is in limbo amidst speculations of a rift with manager Miguel Angel Russo after the club's latest defeat. Marcos Rojo, the former Manchester United player, left Old Trafford after 122 appearances for the Red Devils and joined his native Argentine club Boca Juniors back in 2021. He has since won three trophies with the Boca side. However, despite impressive performances and title-winning campaigns, Rojo's Boca Juniors stint may be coming close to a controversial end, according to a report by ESPN. Undergoing a winless streak, Boca Juniors have seen on-field frustration spill over to scenes off the field, where Rojo and manager Miguel Angel Russo stood in loggerheads with each other. An intense argument following a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Huracán in the second phase of the Argentine Primera Division on Sunday, July 31, led to ugly scenes between the two, causing Russo to axe Rojo from the first-team plans. 'The two are understood to have clashed after the game, with the spat so intense that Rojo has now been removed and ostracised," reported SportBible. 'It's claimed there is no going back for the former Sporting CP defender as the decision 'will not be reversed'. He will therefore have to look into terminating his contract, which runs until 31 December 2025, if he wishes to move on and play elsewhere." Tempers flared inside the setup after Boca Juniors' disappointing winless streak stretched to an 11th outing, which reduced them to the 13th spot in Group A of the Argentine Primera Division. Previously, Russo's men failed to pick up a single victory at the FIFA Club World Cup in Miami, including a draw against New Zealand's amateur side Auckland City. Rojo, however, isn't the only Boca player expelled by the club from their first-team plans. Cristian Lema and Marcelo Saracchi have reportedly joined him on the informal suspension list. While out of the first-choice unit, this trio won't even be allowed to use the changing rooms at the club's training ground in a major seclusion. Notably, Rojo has not played for Boca Juniors since May, when he was part of a penalty shoot-out win over Lanus. He was also left out of the three Club World Cup matches by the side. Rojo's Boca Juniors career is in limbo amidst rumours that the former United player told his side he wishes to leave well before the Club World Cup, but found no other offers at that stage. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
