ED raids Anil Ambani-linked firms over suspected ₹3,000 cr loan fraud

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday raided over 35 premises and initiated searches on around 50 companies and more than 25 individuals linked to Reliance Anil Ambani Group Companies (RAAGA). The action pertains to the alleged diversion of loans worth about ₹3,000 crore from Yes Bank between 2017 and 2019, sources told Business Standard.
The sources further said that other agencies and institutions had also shared information with the ED, including the National Housing Bank, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA), and Bank of Baroda.
'Preliminary investigation by ED has revealed a well-planned and thought-after scheme to divert or siphon off public money by cheating banks, shareholders, investors and other public institutions. The offence of bribing bank officials, including the promoter of Yes Bank Ltd, is also under scanner,' said ED sources.
The source added that the investigation has revealed illegal loan diversion of around ₹3,000 crore from Yes Bank during 2017–19. The ED found that just before the loan was granted, the Yes Bank promoters received money in their concerns. The agency is investigating this nexus between bribes and loans.
'ED has found gross violations in Yes Bank loan approvals to RAAGA companies, such as Credit Approval Memorandums (CAMs) being back-dated and investments being proposed without any due diligence or credit analysis, in violation of the bank's credit policy,' the source noted.
The source further said that in violation of loan terms, the funds were diverted to multiple group and shell companies. 'Some red flags found by ED include: loans given to entities with weak financials; no proper documentation of loans; no due diligence; borrowers with common addresses and directors; diversion of loans to promoter group entities; evergreening of GPC loans; loans onward lent on the same date; loans disbursed on the same day as the application date; loans disbursed prior to sanction; and misrepresentation of financials,' the source added.
The SEBI is also learnt to have shared its findings with the ED in the case of Reliance Home Finance Ltd (RHFL). A dramatic rise in corporate loans by RHFL—from ₹3,742.60 crore in FY18 to ₹8,670.80 crore in FY19—is under scrutiny. Issues of irregular and expedited approvals, process deviations and several other illegalities have been flagged.
Earlier this week, the State Bank of India (SBI) classified Reliance Communications, along with promoter-director Anil D Ambani, as 'fraud', and is also in the process of lodging a complaint with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Parliament was informed on Monday. The entities were classified as fraud on 13 June 2025, in accordance with the Reserve Bank of India's Master Directions on Fraud Risk Management and the bank's board-approved policy on classification, reporting and management of frauds, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
'On 24 June 2025, the bank reported classification of fraud to the RBI and is also in the process of lodging a complaint with the CBI,' he said.

‘He may cause prejudice to the case…': Gujarat HC dismisses plea by journalist Langa seeking bail in PMLA case

The Gujarat High Court has dismissed the petition of journalist Mahesh Langa seeking bail in the November 2024 case filed against him by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, considering the arguments put forth by Gujarat Advocate General Kamal Trivedi that if enlarged on bail, Langa could 'cause prejudice' to the case of the prosecution. Justice MR Mengdey of the Gujarat High Court on Thursday dismissed Langa's petition stating that the court was 'not inclined to exercise its judicial discretion in favour of the applicant'. The oral order of the court stated, 'Having regard to the facts and material available on record, it would be difficult for this court to record a finding to the effect that the applicant is not guilty of the present offence. Moreover, as stated herein above, the applicant is having number of antecedents and therefore, it is also difficult for this Court to come to the conclusion that the applicant will not commit any offence while on bail. There are all chances that if the applicant is ordered to be enlarged on bail, he may cause prejudice to the case of the prosecution.' The case of the ED is based on two FIRs filed against Langa at the Detection of Crime Branch, Ahmedabad, on October 10, 2024, for alleged criminal breach of trust and cheating as well as a second FIR lodged on January 21, 2025, at Satellite Police station in Ahmedabad for alleged extortion. Senior Advocate SN Soparkar and Advocate Anand Yagnik, appearing for Langa, submitted to the court that he had been granted anticipatory bail in DCB Ahmedabad case by the City Civil and Sessions Court, Ahmedabad, on November 25, 2024, and also in the case at Satellite police station by the District and Sessions Court of Ahmedabad on February 11, 2025. 'Initially, the FIR at DCB police station was taken as base to register the impugned ECIR (Enforcement Case Information Report) and thereafter, FIR lodged with Satellite police station was merged into the ECIR,' Langa's advocate informed the HC. Langa's advocates further informed the court that he has been granted anticipatory or regular bail in all six cases against him, including the three offences under the GST Act. The court order noted AG Trivedi's submission that Langa, while being behind the bars, 'is tutoring the witnesses'. The AG cited the example of witness Naina Langa — Langa's sister-in-law — who retracted from her statement recorded by the ED on June 18, 2025. AG Trivedi told the court, 'The applicant has an audacity to file an affidavit under the signature of his advocate on July 7, 2025, producing the affidavit of Ms Naina Langa wherein she has retracted from her statement… The applicant appears to be on a driver's seat regulating everything, his father's account, his wife's account, his sister-in-law's account, his brother's account and has the audacity to say that it may be unaccounted money…' Arguing about the contentious Rs 20 lakh seized from Langa's residence and a subsequent transaction of Rs 30 lakh in connection with a property that was under consideration for purchase in the name of Langa's wife, Kavita, his advocates submitted that 'no predicate offence has been registered in those regards and therefore, these amounts cannot be said to be the proceeds of crime as defined under… PML Act and therefore, the applicant cannot be said to have committed an offence of money laundering as defined in the Act.' The advocates submitted that the amount, which can be alleged to be proceeds of crime, does not exceed Rs 1 crore and therefore, the rigours of the twin conditions of the Act would not come into play, making Langa eligible for bail under the PML Act. Langa's counsel also argued that the precedents relied upon by the state to object to the bail plea were cases related to offences involving crores of rupees or drug peddlers and other illegal activities — none of which is involved in Langa's case. AG Trivedi submitted before the court that the offence has crossed the threshold limit of Rs 1 crore and 'mere grant of anticipatory bail in the predicate offence does not entitle the applicant to be enlarged on bail as a matter of right.' AG Trivedi submitted to the court that the PMLA leaves 'free room for the investigating authority as a complaint can be filed with regard to anything, which is related to proceeds of crime and comes to be noticed during the course of investigation.' He further also submitted that there is 'huge discrepancy in the Cash balance and Annual Income of the present applicant and his wife and his father and Agricultural Income of the father of the applicant of the last six years'.

ED launches PMLA probe into Axis MF front-running case, raids across cities

The Enforcement Directorate on Friday said it conducted searches in multiple cities after registering a money laundering case to probe an instance of front-running in scrips traded by Axis Mutual Fund during 2018-2021, official sources said. Front-running refers to an unethical and illegal practice in the securities market where brokers or traders execute orders for their own benefit using advance knowledge of pending client orders. This malpractice compromises market integrity and disadvantages other investors. The probe involves the role of Viresh Joshi, a former chief trader and fund manager of Axis Mutual Fund. The ED has been investigating this instance under the civil provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) since the Income Tax department conducted searches in this case in 2022. The ED searches under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) were conducted in Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar, Bhuj, Gurugram, Kolkata and Ludhiana, the sources said. The money laundering case stems from a December 2024 FIR of Mumbai police which alleged that Joshi "exploited" confidential information on the trades to be executed on behalf of Axis Mutual Fund, to pre-emptively trade stocks, generating substantial illicit gains. "The accused has thereby cheated the investors of Axis Mutual Fund which hold assets under management of more than Rs 2 lakh crore," according to the ED. The agency also suspects that Joshi had utilised a terminal in Dubai to punch the front-running trade orders through mule trading accounts obtained from various brokers. Joshi has informed the probe agencies that many other traders/brokers also misused the advance inputs on Axis Mutual Fund Trades and indulged in front-running to generate illicit trade profits, which is nothing but proceeds of crime, according to the sources. The proceeds of the fraud were funnelled through multiple shell entities and bank accounts beneficially owned by the accused persons/entities and their family members, which is under investigation by the ED, the sources said.
