This year marks the first time HKSTP joined forces with Hong Kong's two leading medical faculties—the LKS Faculty of Medicine at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) – to form a delegation, showcasing Hong Kong's cutting-edge research capabilities and innovation potential in life sciences and health technologies. The initiative further strengthens Hong Kong's position as a world-class biotech innovation hub.
In collaboration with InvestHK, HKSTP joined forces with the LKS Faculty of Medicine at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) for the first time to form a delegation and led 16 prominent life and health technology companies to showcase at BIO 2025 held in Boston, USA.
The HKSTP Pavilion highlighted the groundbreaking technologies and products of its park companies, featuring innovative solutions across diverse fields such as novel drug development, diagnostic technologies, and medical innovation. Among the 16 participating companies, they were the members of HKSTP's incubation programmes including Incu-Bio and ELITE Programme, cutting-edge work from the InnoHK research centers, and other outstanding biotech companies. On the first day of the exhibition, the delegation successfully attracted attention from global industry leaders, corporate partners, and venture capital firms.

Three HKSTP companies—ARBELE, GenEditBio, and Cogsmart—excelled in the preliminary rounds, competing against over 100 global life sciences firms, with ARBELE, HKUMed's affiliated spin-off company, winning the championship, underscoring Hong Kong's research excellence. Over the past three years, this platform has helped startups secure over USD 100 million in funding and connect with hundreds of international investors and partners, driving further business growth.

Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC): New initiative to eliminate Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in children ‘a beacon of hope'
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has launched a bold new national initiative aimed at eliminating AIDS among children by 2030 – a move hailed by the United Nations as 'a beacon of hope' amid growing global funding constraints. 'Our country can no longer tolerate children being born and growing up with HIV, when tools exist to prevent, detect and effectively treat this infection,' President Félix Tshisekedi declared at a recent government conference in the south-eastern Lualaba province, as he launched the five-year initiative. Backed by an initial commitment of $18 million in national funds, the Presidential Initiative to End Pediatric AIDS will focus on political leadership, systems strengthening and inclusive healthcare access particularly for children, adolescents, and pregnant women. It also aligns well with DRC's global commitments under the Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3) to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all. Children lagging behind The initiative marks a renewed commitment by the DRC to address children's extremely limited access to HIV prevention and treatment services. While the DRC has made notable strides in adult HIV response – 91 per cent of adults living with HIV now have access to antiretroviral treatment – children continue to lag far behind. Only 44 per cent of children living with HIV in the country currently receive lifesaving treatment, a figure that has remained unchanged for over a decade. Every year, thousands of Congolese children are still infected, often due to a lack of screening among pregnant women, depriving the health system of a crucial opportunity to prevent mother-to-child transmission as well as saving the mother's live. 'The eradication of paediatric AIDS is a moral imperative, an imperative of social justice and an indicator of dignity,' Mr. Tshisekedi said. Four core priorities The Presidential Initiative targets four core areas: Improving early detection and treatment of HIV for children, adolescents and pregnant women Preventing new infections in children, adolescents and mothers Guarantee systematic and immediate treatment for those diagnosed Remove structural barriers hindering young people's access to health services A breath of fresh air The UN Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) praised the initiative as an example of the national leadership needed to close critical gaps in global HIV response. Susan Kasedde, UNAIDS Country Director in the DRC, commended the initiative as 'a breath of fresh air' at a time when global development financing is under strain. 'At a time when development financing is experiencing turbulence and risk jeopardizing the systems that support the most vulnerable, President Tshisekedi's leadership initiative is a beacon of hope,' she said. According to UNAIDS, recent funding cuts are threatening critical HIV services, with stock of medication and condoms feared to run out within months. Fewer babies in Botswana acquire Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) thanks to dedicated push to eliminate mother to child transmission
Eliminating mother to child transmission of HIV is possible. And Botswana is celebrating becoming the first country in Africa – and the first country with a high burden of HIV - to be awarded a Gold Tier status by the World Health Organization (WHO), for its efforts to eliminate vertical transmission of HIV completely. This is a huge accomplishment for a country with one of the most severe HIV epidemics in the world, which in 1999 had an estimated HIV prevalence among adults as high as 30%. Women living with HIV who do not receive antiretroviral (ARV) medicine have a 15–45% chance of transmitting the virus to their children during pregnancy, labour, delivery or breastfeeding. That risk drops to less than 5% if treatment is given to both mothers and children throughout the stages when transmission can occur. According to UNAIDS' Spectrum report 2024, around 360,000 people are currently living with HIV in Botswana, with 98% of pregnant women living with HIV receiving treatment. Vertical transmission has dropped to just 1.2%, resulting in fewer than 100 infants being born with HIV in 2023. The goal is to reach zero. The Path to an HIV-free Botswana The Triple Elimination Initiative, led by WHO, in close collaboration with UNICEF and UNAIDS, aims to halt vertical transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B, by encouraging countries to integrate services to improve the health of mothers and children. In May 2025, Botswana's Gold Tier status on the Path to Elimination of HIV, was unanimously agreed by the global validation committee, which assesses programme interventions, laboratory services, engagement of Civil Society Organisations and evaluates data against a set of elimination criteria. The attainment of 'Gold tier' status by Botswana can be attributed to several high impact initiatives: Pioneering interventions over the years, such as the early adoption of Option B+ (lifelong treatment for all pregnant and breastfeeding women with HIV), free antiretroviral therapy for all, including non-citizens since 2019, and decentralisation of services through District Health Management Teams. Digitising data collection systems with the Open Medical Record System (Open-MRS); Championing the empowerment of community health workers (CHWs) through increased training; Strong government leadership, including committing domestic resources. Embracing the crucial importance of Civil Society Organisations, which engage communities in reducing stigma and violence, testing partners and encouraging adherence to PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) and treatment; Support from 2gether 4 SRHR 2gether 4 SRHR is a joint UN Regional Programme, in partnership with Sweden, which brings together the combined efforts of UNAIDS, UNFPA, UNICEF and WHO to improve the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of all people in Eastern and Southern Africa. The regional validation secretariat of the Triple Elimination Initiative includes the same UN agencies, which continue to support Botswana through its validation process, with funding support from 2gether 4 SRHR. In phase one of the programme (2018-2023), Botswana was supported as the first country globally to apply for the Path to Elimination of HIV. To meet these rigorous data requirements, 2gether 4 SRHR established a data mentorship programme, aiming to build the capacity of Ministries of Health across the region, to analyse and use data to prove progress on the path to elimination of vertical transmission of HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B. Countries including Botswana also received financial support from 2gether 4 SRHR to develop HIV Prevention Roadmaps. These evidence-based, people-centred, HIV prevention plans focus on reducing new infections and ensuring long-term sustainability of prevention programming which can withstand funding shocks. Botswana was also one of ten countries to develop action plans to engage men in HIV prevention and leveraged the existing 'Brothers Arise' #Nanogang campaign, to work with men to increase their uptake of HIV services and create male friendly platforms to discuss norms. In consultation with the Ministry of Health, a guide for best practice services for men and boys is now in use. This major milestone should be celebrated not only in Botswana, but across the Region. With 2.6 million new HIV infections in children averted since 2010, the 57% decline in new HIV infections among children in Eastern and Southern Africa is one of the top global public health achievements in decades. Adolescents girls living with HIV receive HPV vaccination in Goa
In a vital effort toward cancer prevention and adolescent health equity, 14 young people living with HIV were vaccinated against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) during a special screening and awareness drive organized by Human Touch Foundation and the National Coalition of People Living with HIV (NCPI+), with support from the Rotary Club of Dona Paula and Indian medical Association Bicholim Branch. The programme began with an interactive awareness session, helping adolescents and caregivers understand HPV transmission, cancer risks, and the importance of early vaccination — especially for those living with HIV, who are at higher risk for persistent HPV infections and related complications. The initiative was led by Dr. Shekhar Salkar, President of Indian Medical Association (IMA), Bicholim, and assisted by Dr. Elaine Rodrigues, Coordinator of the HPV Vaccination Drive of Rotary Club of Dona Paula, along with Mr. Nilam. The programme was further supported by Manipal Hospital, which provided an ambulance and emergency medical staff on-site. The event was made possible with the support of Felippe Alvares, Secretary of the Rotary Club of Dona Paula who expressed his happiness to be a part of such an initiative which gives immense satisfaction. The drive was facilitated by Celina Menezes, Advocacy Officer, NCPI+, with coordination support from Ucila Miranda, Programme Coordinator at Human Touch Foundation, and Usha Pawar. 'If girls are vaccinated early—between 9 to 15 years—we can reach a future where cervical cancer is no longer a threat,' emphasized Dr. Shekhar Salkar, underlining the importance of early intervention. Celina Menezes added, 'Adolescents living with HIV are significantly more vulnerable to persistent HPV infections, which can lead to cancers at an earlier age and with more aggressive progression. This vaccine offers them protection and a pathway to a healthier future.' This initiative is part of Human Touch Foundation's broader mission to promote inclusive, adolescent-centered healthcare and to close health equity gaps for vulnerable communities in Goa. Human Touch Foundation has been consistently working to advance adolescent health and wellbeing, particularly in vulnerable areas and with marginalized groups such as adolescents living with HIV.
