Archdruid of Wales Mererid Hopwood to appear at festival

Rhyl Journal3 days ago
Mererid Hopwood, the Archdruid of Wales, will appear at the North Wales International Music Festival in St Asaph as part of the event's fringe programme, sponsored by Pendine Park through its Pendine Arts and Community Trust.
She will read a poem originally written to uplift people during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Mererid Hopwood, archdruid of Wales, said: "Such events often create a quite magical atmosphere and I'm excited at being invited to take part."
Her appearance is scheduled for 9.30pm on Thursday, September 18 at Jacob's Ladder café, following the evening concert at St Asaph Cathedral.
Mererid Hopwood, who became the first woman to be awarded the chair at the National Eisteddfod in 2001 when it was held in Denbigh, has fond memories of the Vale of Clwyd.
She will read from her new book Mae, a collection written in both Welsh and English.
She said: "I'll be reading poems from my new book Mae as well as some others.
"Most of them are in Welsh but I have written poems in English and several more have been translated."
Mae includes poems about peace, injustice, the environment, and family.
The title comes from a piece commissioned during the first Covid lockdown in March 2020.
She said: "Someone from S4C phoned up and said they wanted a poem to cheer people up who were stuck at home."
Paul Mealor, artistic director of the festival, said: "It's the second time we've staged these fringe events and they were so successful last year we've decided they'll return again this year."
Other fringe highlights include pianist Cyrill Ibrahim performing Harmonie du Soir at St Asaph Cathedral, jazz guitarist Joshua Lascar at the New Inn on Saturday, September 13, and a cabaret night with Jillian Bain Christie and John Frederick Hudson on Friday, September 19.
Mr Mealor said: "Our first comedy evening was hugely successful and Manon James will again be appearing at the New Inn along with Katie Gill and it'll be an evening of laughs and more laughs."
Ms Hopwood has previously collaborated with Mr Mealor.
She said: "During Covid I wrote the words for a piece composed by Paul called Gweddi Cymru (Wales' Prayer).
"It was for the BBC's annual St David's Day concert and my words were read over the music."
The festival opens on Thursday, September 11, with Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja, who Mr Mealor describes as "the world's finest lyric tenor."
Other headliners include the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, vocal ensemble Apollo5, and the Black Dyke Band.
Film and TV composer Debbie Wiseman OBE will make her festival debut this year with performances of her well-known themes by the NEW Sinfonia orchestra.
The festival will also host the second Pendine Young Musician of Wales competition.
This year's closing concert will feature the North Wales Choral Union and Orchestra conducted by Trystan Lewis.
Community events include a Tots & Children's concert, a dementia-friendly concert, and Mindfulness through Music workshops.
Tickets and more information are available online.

Ford Kiernan loved the quiz show so much he tried to bring it back, saying, 'I approached STV but it turned out some Dutch company owned the rights.' GAME ON TV's biggest game show flops after David Tennant series 'axed' – and the surprise hits Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) DAVID Tennant's turn as a game show host has ended in disaster - after his flop The Genius Game got the same viewing figures as a BBC2 show about pangolins. The reality game show hosted by the Scots actor is believed to have cost ITV £2.5million to make but drew an average audience of just 661,000 - matched by Pangolins: The World's Most Wanted Animal. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 6 Alexander Armstrong has proved to be a popular host of Pointless. 6 Paddy McGuinnes saw the lost of three million viewers as Question of Sport host before the BBC cancelled it. 6 Johnny Beattie was a cult hit as a game show host. Still Game's Ford Kiernan wanted to host a reboot. However David, 54, isn't the only actor to have made the surprise career choice of hosting a telly quiz. JOHNNY BEATTIE - HIT THE legendary Scot started his showbiz career as a comic but was actually renowned for his serious acting roles - appearing alongside Liam Neeson in the 1990 film The Big Man. Johnny, who passed away in 2020 aged 93, also played a baddie in Taggart and was popular as River City OAP Malcolm Hamilton which he played from 2002 until 2015. But Johnny also hosted the STV gameshow Now You See It from 1981-1984, which Still Game creator Ford Kiernan loved so much he tried to bring, saying: 'I approached STV but it turned out some Dutch company owned the rights.' NICHOLAS PARSONS - HIT 6 The English public school boy cut his teeth on the tough Clyde shipyards before hosting Just a Minute of Radio 4 for 52 years. THE English public school boy dreamed of being an entertainer but his family disapproved so to please them he trained as a mechanical engineer on the Clydeside shipyards. Nicholas, who died in 2020 aged 96, stayed in Glasgow throughout World War II, where he won a radio talent contest before going on to appear in a series of 1950s films including Upstairs and Downstairs and Too Many Crooks. But he became a national treasure as the genial host of ITV's Sale of the Century, and for over 50 years also chaired the comedy panel game show Just A Minute, in which contestants must avoid hesitation, repetition or deviation. RICHARD O'BRIEN - FLOP 6 Richard O'Brien's unconventional was a miss with viewers. RICHARD O'Brien is probably best known for writing the musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show which in starred in as the sinister handyman Riff Raff. But the 83 year old English actor made the leap to quiz show host in 1990 when he took the helm of Channel 4's The Crystal Maze. His sarcastic put-downs and random harmonica playing saw the show reach a peak audience of seven million viewers in 1993, but two years later it was cancelled. BRADLEY WALSH - HIT BRADLEY is another who took the comedy route to acting where he went on to star as Danny Baldwin in Coronation Street for two years from 2004. He also appeared as copper DS Ronnie Brooks in Law & Order: UK for five years from 2009 and was a regular in Doctor Who. But Bradley, 65, has carved out a niche as one of the most in demand game show hosts starting with Wheel of Fortune in 1997 then Odd One In (2010–2011), Keep It in the Family (2014–2015), Cash Trapped (2016–2019), and Blankety Blank and The Chase which he still presents to this day. PADDY MCGUINNESS - FLOP FOUND fame starring in Peter Kay's Channel smash hit Phoenix Nights and then the spin-off series Max And Paddy's Road to Nowhere at the start of the noughties. But Paddy, 51, has concentrated on presenting work since then hosting the ITV date game show Take Me Out from 2010 to 2019 and hosting Tempting Fortune for the last two years. However, taking over the BBC longest running quiz show A Question Of Sport in 2021 from Sue Barker saw ratings plummet from four million to one million, before the telly chiefs pulled the plug for good. ALEXANDER ARMSTRONG - HIT THE English actor made his name as one half of the comedy duo Armstrong and Miller with Ben Miller after the pair were snapped up for telly after a successful Edinburgh Festival run in the 1990s. But Alexander continues to have a string of acting credits to his name including Doctor Who and playing an alien supercomputer in Time Lord's spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures. However these days the 55 year old is probably best known as the host of Pointless, which debuted on BBC Two in 2009 before moving to BBC One in 2011 and is still on screen to this day along with the spin-off Pointless Celebrities.

Live Aid's Bob Geldof felt ‘responsible' after tragic daughter death and how he gets 'respite' from his sorrow

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Sir Bob Geldof is a name that we all recognise, whether that was for his vocals as a member of the Irish rock band the Boomtown Rats, or perhaps for his fundraising work organising the charity supergroup Band Aid. He later organised the charity concert Live Aid which is celebrating a 40 year anniversary in 2025 and Live 8 which took place in 2005, all of which were to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia. However, you may not know about Sir Bob's difficult family history, after losing one of his daughters to a heroin overdose in 2014. The political activist has spoken openly to the media about his grief, and questioning whether or not he was responsible. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter . Peaches Geldof was the second daughter of Bob and the Welsh television presenter and writer Paula Yates, the first daughter being Fifi Trixibelle Geldof. Peaches was a model, journalist and TV presenter who presented her own documentary programmes and frequently wrote magazine columns. When she was just 11-years-old, her mother died of a heroin overdose in 2000 at the age of 41. In a 2013 interview with Elle magazine, she explained how difficult the process of coming to terms with her mother's death was: She said: "I remember the day my mother died, and it's still hard to talk about it. I just blocked it out. I went to school the next day because my father's mentality was 'keep calm and carry on'. So we all went to school and tried to act as if nothing had happened. But it had happened. "I didn't grieve. I didn't cry at her funeral. I couldn't express anything because I was just numb to it all. I didn't start grieving for my mother properly until I was maybe 16." (Image: Mirrorpix) Just 14 years later, at 25-years-old unfortunately Peaches faced a much similar fate leaving behind two young sons, Astala and Phaedra. Peaches was discovered deceased by her husband Tom Cohen at their residence in Wrotham, Kent, on April 7, 2014. An inquest found that the cause of her death was opioid intoxication, and recorded a verdict of drug-related death, however there was no evidence to suggest it was deliberate. At the time, the Boomtown Rats frontman and campaigner expressed his torment, saying he "goes over and over and over" what he could have done to aid the mother of two. In an interview with ITV News, he described his daughter as "super bright" but "frantic" in her personal life. "You blame yourself," Sir Bob Geldof confessed. "You're the father who is responsible and clearly failed." He continued: "For anybody watching, who has a dead kid and you're a parent, you go back, you go back, you go over, you go over. What could you have done? You do as much as you can." (Image: PA) He mentioned that press criticism of his daughters following the demise of their mother Paula Yates in 2000 had also "damaged" them. When questioned if he was aware of his daughter's drug dependency, he acknowledged: "Of course I knew about it and we did more than talk about it, yeah. She was super bright. Too bright. "But the rest was a franticness. She knew what life was supposed to be and God bless her, she tried very hard to get there. And she didn't make it." Sir Bob revealed that performing with the Boomtown Rats offers him a respite from the sorrow of losing his daughter. He explained: "It is utterly cathartic. Those two hours and I am drained. In every sense it empties, it drains my mind. "On stage I'm lost in this thing and it's a very brief respite. ". The Boomtown Rats are celebrating their 50th anniversary and once again touring following their performance on Jools Holland's Annual Hootenanny on New Year's Eve. This includes a UK tour, some European dates and several festivals. You can find more here.

It is ever-changing. And one thing that is changing is The Welsh House. It's going to become The Welsh House by Wynne. 'Big things are coming...' (Image: Instagram/Wynne Evans) 'I promise you it will have MasterChef dishes on the menu, it's going to have a fabulous warm welcome and I want you to come and see me, OK?
