Times of Oman21-05-2025
Muscat: The Royal Opera House Muscat (ROHM) , in collaboration with the Scientific College of Design, announced the winners of The Violetta Project: A Journey into Fashion Design, a special initiative inspired by its recent production of Verdi's La Traviata.
This project invited fashion design students to explore the character of Violetta through the lens of costume design, reimagining her emotional journey in fresh, creative ways.
As a place of learning and cultural enrichment, the Royal Opera House Muscat continues to open its doors through educational initiatives that make opera and the arts more accessible.
This project encouraged students to approach opera from a new perspective, deepening their engagement with narrative, character, and historical context.
After a series of curated workshops that supported students in translating Violetta's dramatic evolution into visual design, two standout participants, Nihal Al-Khaziri and Shadan Al-Malki, were selected for their compelling work.
Their designs impressed judges with their ability to capture the complexity and transformation of Violetta's character, blending narrative insight with innovative fashion interpretation.
The project fostered both technical and creative growth, equipping young designers with professional tools in storytelling and character development while inspiring a deeper appreciation for opera and its emotional richness.
Acclaimed performances
The initiative coincided with two acclaimed performances of La Traviata on May 1 and 3, conducted by the legendary Plácido Domingo with the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro Carlo Felice, under the direction of Marta Domingo.
The production starred Juliana Grigoryan in her faultless and emotionally bruising debut as Violetta and Yusif Eyvazov as Alfredo, his fabulous tenor voice offering the perfect partnership. The production featured striking visuals and flamenco-inspired choreography by the Antonio Gades Company.

Meet Cardinal, colour of the year 2025

Asian Paints Berger, the recipient of Oman's Most Trusted Brand award, announced 'Cardinal' as its Colour of the Year during ColourNext 2025 event held at the St Regis Al Mouj. The event served as a celebration of colour, culture, and creativity, drawing design luminaries from across Oman, Bahrain, and the UAE. Held under the patronage of Her Highness Sayyida Basma Al Said, the evening was attended by Joseph Eapen, Chief Executive of Asian Paints International, and G. Gopalakrishnan, General Manager of Asian Paints Berger Oman. The gathering brought together a vibrant community of architects, designers, and thought leaders for a first look at the ideas shaping the future of design in the region. The centerpiece of the evening was the reveal of Cardinal, a rich and dusky hue that speaks to the growing importance of emotional resonance in design. Complementing this announcement, Asian Paints also unveiled three influential design directions for 2025, each shaped by insights from the company's extensive trend forecasting initiative, ColourNext. Now in its third decade, ColourNext continues to lead the way in translating global cultural shifts into actionable design themes, using the lenses of colour, texture, material, and mood. The first of these design directions, 'Bad Taste?', is a bold commentary on traditional design norms. It challenges traditional ideas of beauty and balance by embracing things that feel awkward on purpose, are overly decorative, or express raw emotions. The centerpiece of this corner was the 'Prince', a colourful sculpture by famous Omani artist Hassan Meer. The second trend, 'Salt', draws inspiration from one of the world's most essential and symbolic minerals. Salt is ever-present—quiet yet indispensable—and its metaphoric richness serves as a foundation for this minimalist yet profound design approach. The third trend, 'Feel More', champions design that not only pleases the eye but also nurtures the soul. This trend encourages the creation of sensory-rich environments and spaces that embrace softness, warmth, and emotional complexity. Through gentle materials, layered lighting, and subtle detail, Feel More cultivates environments that support vulnerability, reflection, and deep emotional connection. Reflecting on the event and the larger vision behind it, Joseph Eapen, CEO of Asian Paints International, said: 'At Asian Paints, we believe innovation must resonate beyond functionality—it must connect emotionally and culturally. Our mission is to inspire living spaces that are not only beautiful but meaningful, and ColourNext is our platform to lead that conversation.' With the unveiling of Cardinal and the powerful narratives behind this year's trends, Asian Paints once again affirms its position at the forefront of design thinking in the region. It continues to push boundaries and ignite inspiration—crafting homes, spaces, and experiences that are vibrant, human, and deeply relevant to the times we live in.

Largest graffiti mural launched in Musandam

Khasab: A massive artistic mural—the largest of its kind in Oman and among the most prominent in the Gulf region—was inaugurated in Musandam Governorate. Spanning a striking mountain facade at the governorate's entrance, the contemporary graffiti-style artwork reflects the spirit and unique maritime identity of the region, blending art with the local environment. The event was held under the patronage of Sayyid Ibrahim Said Al Busaidi, Governor of Musandam. The mural, created by Omani artist Abdulaziz Al Shehi, stretches 70 meters in length and 14 meters in height. Its execution took 40 consecutive days, with an average of three hours of work daily, utilizing over 500 cans of paint. The artwork vividly depicts scenes of marine life for which Musandam is renowned, including pearl diving, dolphins, coral reefs, and various maritime activities, transforming the site into an artistic and tourist landmark that captivates visitors and residents alike. Sayyid Ibrahim, stated: "We take pride in this artistic work, which showcases the beauty of Musandam's marine environment and enhances the governorate's visual identity. We encourage such initiatives that harness art to serve tourism and provide opportunities for the people of Musandam to innovate and excel." The Musandam Governorate also announced plans to organize a graffiti festival as part of the upcoming "Musandam Winter" events, featuring a selection of local and international artists. The festival aims to transform several public spaces into open-air art galleries that convey cultural and aesthetic messages reflecting the governorate's natural beauty and heritage. This creative momentum aligns with Musandam's preparations to launch the Musandam International Diving Festival next September, as part of a broader vision to enhance the region's artistic and touristic appeal while maintaining a balance between environmental preservation and showcasing nature as a source of inspiration and creativity.
