Beset with violence & politics, other campuses try to turn over a new leaf
Kolkata: Law colleges in the city have a history of campus violence and skirmishes. While some, including the college where the gang rape took place on Friday, continue to grapple with such issues, others have made efforts in recent years to improve their reputation by enforcing discipline, adhering to academic schedules, and strengthening safety and security measures.
The college that came under the spotlight on Friday has witnessed vandalism and violence between rival students' groups. A few months ago, another south Kolkata-based institution, Jogesh Chandra Choudhury Law College, hit the headlines when students of the college had to organise the Saraswati Puja under police protection after Calcutta High Court intervened when students went to the court alleging intimidation by outsiders.
During the 1980s and 1990s, violence frequently occurred on law campuses in the city, including incidents of bombs being lobbed during union elections. Several former students from this period said entry into law campuses was unhindered. Some indicated that a reference from a former prominent Congress leader sufficed to secure admission to a law college near Sealdah. "Some of our batchmates at that time got their college admission forms while sitting at the leader's house, and political affiliation was the only criterion to get admission where merit didn't play any role.

Jatindra Kumar Das, head of the department of law and dean, faculty of law, Calcutta University, stated that systematic classes and exams motivated students to study regularly, while the institution took necessary actions to enhance campus safety and security. "We have tried to reduce political interference by involving students in academics and other activities. Previously, classes were not held regularly, and students engaged in politics, leading to brawls and fights.
However, the situation has changed completely. We have restricted outsiders on campus, and students are encouraged to participate in academics and activities that aid their careers. These have helped us reform the college's image. Security was enhanced," he added.
Surendranath Law College was notorious for campus violence in the past. But it has improved its image considerably in recent years by implementing measures to address untoward incidents, particularly gender-based violence.
Shibasish Banerjee, visiting faculty and advocate at Calcutta HC, said: "We have a strong mechanism in place to prevent untoward incidents. The campus is almost entirely covered with CCTV cameras.
Students must vacate the common room by 2 pm. If there is a programme and students need to stay until late evening, access is limited to areas covered by CCTV cameras. We try to prevent students from staying beyond 8 pm. There is a grievance cell, and two female teachers are assigned duties to check on female students for any issues in college."

Police identified the accused as Manojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay alias Pramit Mukherjee (20). According to FIR, one of them committed penetrative sexual assault while the others abetted the crime. All three were named in the FIR based on the survivor's complaint. The incident reportedly occurred between 7:30pm and 10:50pm on Wednesday at a location inside the college premises. Following the complaint, the victim underwent a preliminary medical examination at Calcutta National Medical College (CNMC). Several witnesses were questioned, and their statements recorded. The spot was secured and preserved for forensic examination. Manojit and Zaib were arrested on Thursday around 7:20pm and 7:35pm, respectively, near Siddhartha Shankar Sishu Roy Udyan at Talbagan Crossing, and their mobile phones were seized. The third accused, Pramit, was taken into custody from his residence in the early hours of Friday. His phone was also confiscated. All three were produced before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) court in Alipore, South 24 Parganas, on Thursday. The court sent them to four days of police custody for further investigation. NCW takes cognisance The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken cognisance of the incident and asked the West Bengal Police to conduct a thorough and time-bound investigation, ensuring justice for the survivor. Later in the day, the ruling TMC issued a statement condemning the incident. "We unequivocally condemn the tragic rape incident at South Calcutta Law College. Kolkata police have swiftly apprehended all 3 accused, and the full weight of the law will be brought to bear, ensuring the most severe measures are imposed on those found guilty," the party said in a post on X. "This tragedy once again underscores the urgent need for the implementation of the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill to establish a strong deterrent against sexual offences, emphasising the necessity for speedy investigations, swift trials, and stringent punishments.

Mumbai-based businessman stabbed with screwdriver in Bengaluru for sacking horse trainer; 3 held
Bengaluru: In a dramatic act of revenge straight out of a thriller, a 47-year-old Mumbai-based businessman was attacked with a screwdriver in the parking lot of a star hotel, following a year-old fallout with his former horse trainer. The injured businessman is Suchit Jayaraj Shah, a resident of Patan Jain Mandal Marg near Marine Drive and a horse-racing enthusiast. He had sacked horse trainer Jasbhir Singh a year ago, allegedly over professional differences. Since then, tensions simmered and Jasbhir is said to have threatened Shah of dire consequences. Shah had checked into the hotel with friend Sameer to attend a horse-racing event at Bengaluru Race Course. Jasbhir, upon learning of Shah's visit, came to Bengaluru with his younger brother Sunny and an aide named Billa and checked into the same hotel. As he was sleeping, he did not receive the call. Then the hotel's reception called the landline in Shah's room and informed him that Sunny was waiting for him at the reception. Sunny and Billa got into an argument with Shah and told him to come outside the hotel or they'd kill him. Shah told police they took him to the parking lot where Sunny hit him on the head. When Sameer tried to rescue Shah, Billa grabbed him from behind. Sunny claimed Shah had ruined his (Jasbhir's) reputation. He took out a screwdriver and tried to stab him. Shah collapsed on the ground, and people in the hotel rushed to the spot after hearing his cries for help, police said. While Sunny and Billa escaped from the premises, Shah was taken to a nearby hospital. He later lodged a complaint. Cops swung into action and arrested Jasbhir, Sunny and Billa. The trio claimed Shah deliberately sacked Jasbhir from work and bad-mouthed him. A case has been registered under BNS Sections 109 (attempt to murder). A senior police officer said Shah is out of danger and has returned to Mumbai.

Convicted former BJP MLA seeks pardon from Governor, Congress questions ‘political duplicity'
Former Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Kanwar Lal Meena, convicted and sentenced to three years' imprisonment in a 20-year-old criminal case, has moved a mercy petition before Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagade seeking pardon. As part of the process, the opinion of police officials in Jhalawar, where the case was registered in 2005, has been sought. The former Anta MLA's Assembly membership was terminated last month after the Rajasthan High Court upheld his conviction and sentence and he surrendered in the trial court following the Supreme Court's refusal to give any relief. The delay in the decision on Meena's disqualification had led to a political slugfest between the ruling BJP and the Opposition Congress. The Congress and civil rights groups in Jaipur on Friday (June 27, 2025) questioned 'political duplicity' in the matter while affirming that initiating the process for remission of Meena's sentence amounted to adopting double standards. Congress MLA and Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully said there seemed to be one law for BJP members and another for common people. The case against Meena pertained to an incident in February 2005, when he arrived with seven associates at the venue of a protest by the villagers in Jhalawar district demanding a Deputy Sarpanch repoll and brandished a revolver at the Sub-Divisional Magistrate. He threatened the SDM and asked him to either announce a repoll within two minutes or get killed. This was a rare instance for a sitting MLA being disqualified in Rajasthan, though it is not the first case. The Anta seat in Baran district became vacant after Meena's disqualification, about which the Election Commission has been informed. By-election for the constituency, to be held within six months, is yet to be announced. Some BJP leaders had favoured seeking pardon or commutation of Meena's sentence to less than two years by the Governor before his disqualification. After the termination of his membership, the mercy petition has been filed under Article 161 of the Constitution, which empowers the Governor to 'grant pardons, etc., and to suspend, remit or commute sentences in certain cases'. The Governor's office has sought a report from the State government on Meena's petition. Following this, Jhalawar Superintendent of Police Richa Tomar has sent letters to Station House Officers of Manohar Thana and Aklera police stations, asking them for their opinion, along with the comments of the Circle Officer. Mr. Jully said the true face of the BJP, which was pretending to be the protector of democracy, had been exposed in Meena's case. 'Is this privilege reserved only for the BJP members? Initiating such a process for a sacked MLA convicted by the court is tantamount to the murder of democracy,' he said, adding that the BJP wanted to run two laws in the country. The Soochna Evum Rozgar Adhikar Abhiyan demanded that any process to pardon Meena be stopped with immediate effect, and 'strict ethical standards and accountability system' be ensured for MLAs and public representatives. 'The attempt to save Meena is a clear instance of misuse of power, which not only insults the basic spirit of the Constitution and the justice system, but also sets double standards for those in power and the people,' Adhikar's member Nikhil Dey said. However, Law Minister Jogaram Patel told journalists during his visit to Jodhpur that the filing of a mercy petition before the Governor was a constitutional process to which every convicted person had a right. 'The Governor reviews the petition as per the legal provisions and takes a decision. If the sentence is pardoned, Meena's Assembly seat will be restored… If the Governor takes another decision, the situation as it is today will remain the same,' Mr. Patel said.
