SMG flood mitigation project increases Klang river capacity by 18pct
Syaiful Azmen Nordin, managing director of Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd (LLSB), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) appointed as the master developer of the SMG project, said the improved river section spans two of four key project blocks - from the Shah Alam-Klang border to the Shah Alam-Puchong border, and from the river mouth to Bandar Klang - identified as Blocks 3 and 1, respectively.
He said the state government, through its agencies, is targeting a total increase of at least 40 per cent in river capacity by the end of this year after past data revealed that Klang River, especially in Selangor, could not accommodate upstream water overflow during heavy rains.
"Block 3, which covers flood-prone areas such as Sri Muda, Kota Kemuning, Section 17, and Section 24, requires special attention, as these are the most affected zones in recent flood events," he told reporters after a site visit to the flood mitigation project in Kota Kemuning yesterday.
The river widening and dredging works for the remaining two blocks - from Bandar Klang to Bandar Sultan Sulaiman (Block 2), and from the Shah Alam-Puchong border to Petaling Jaya-Kuala Lumpur (Block 4) - will begin next year, covering an additional 28.8km.
Syaiful Azmen said construction on Blocks 1 and 3 is expected to be completed by year-end, after which a two-year enhancement and monitoring phase will begin, also managed by LLSB.
To date, around 94,000 tonnes of waste have been extracted from the river, at an estimated handling cost of RM20 million, he said.
"That RM20 million could've been used for other development initiatives, if only there was greater public awareness about river cleanliness," he added. — BERNAMA

Ex-rep turns the tables on deepfake scam ring
PETALING JAYA: With the faces of popular figures appearing in deepfake videos promoting investment scams, a former state assemblyman has deliberately stepped into the trap to expose the syndicate's tactics. Former Pasir Pinji assemblyman Datuk Chan Kam said he recently discovered that AI-generated scam videos were widely circulating on social media. 'I decided to click on one of them and enter my contact details to see what would happen. 'Soon after, I received a phone call from someone inviting me to invest in a plan. 'The caller said if I chip in US$250 (RM1,100), I could receive a return of between RM5,000 and RM20,000,' he told a press conference organised by MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong yesterday. Chan said after transferring the money into a bank account, the scammer kept updating him daily on his supposed investment status while persuading him to invest further. But he stopped just there. Cause for concern: Chong speaking on the rise of AI-powered cheating cases in Malaysia during a press conference at Wisma MCA, Kuala Lumpur. Looking on is Chan (centre). — YAP CHEE HONG/The Star 'Obviously, the money is gone,' he said, adding that the fund was pooled by himself, Chong, and several members of the Crime Prevention Foundation and the Malaysia-China Friendship and Mutual Aid Association. Chan said he had gathered the relevant evidence and planned to lodge a police report. 'I hope that by sharing my story, more people will be cautious and not fall for these scams,' he said. Chong said deepfake videos featuring celebrities, politicians, high-ranking civil servants and prominent businessmen endorsing investment scams are increasingly being used to deceive unsuspecting investors. He cited one particularly absurd clip showing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim speaking in English with a Tamil accent. 'It's ridiculous. Remember, there is no such thing as easy money. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is fake,' he added. Sharing police statistics, Chong said a total of 13,956 scam cases involving RM2.11bil were reported last year, with 85% of victims lured through social media. Also present were lawyer James Ee Kah Fuk, Perak Malaysia-China Friendship and Mutual Aid Association chairman Chuah Ai Ngor, and Perak MCA Public Services and Complaints Department chief Yuen Zhan How.

Wang-Zheng estimates initial RM20mil loss from fire at Rawang factory, warehouse
KUALA LUMPUR: Wang-Zheng Bhd has estimated a provisional loss of around RM20 million following a fire at the factory and warehouse of its wholly owned Carefeel Cotton Industries (M) Sdn Bhd (CCI). In a response to a query from Bursa Malaysia, the company, which is involved in the manufacturing, processing and distribution of fibre-based products, said the actual losses at CCI have yet to be determined. "The company is unable to determine the actual losses to be incurred by CCI and from the occurrence, as discussions with our insurance providers to quantify the financial impact are still ongoing. "Preliminary assessments suggest that any financial effects, including business disruption, will be mitigated through our existing insurance coverage. "Based on information available at this time, the estimated provisional loss for this incident is approximately RM20 million, arising from the loss of plant, machinery and inventories, prior to insurance claim from the fire incident," it added. Wang Zheng announced earlier this week that the incident occurred at CCI's factory in Rawang, Selangor, in the morning on June 30 (Monday). It said the management had lodged a report with the police and the insurance company on the incident. "As the Fire and Rescure Department operations are ongoing and investigations into the cause of the fire are under way, the operations at the factory and warehouse have been halted and closed. "Our staff in CCI have been re-located to other factories of our subsidiary companies," it said. Wang-Zheng said a further announcement will be made on the actual losses incurred by the company upon completion of the investigation and assessment by the company's internal team, insurance provider and relevant authorities.

Reits, construction buck Bursa downtrend in first half of 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: Real estate investment trusts (Reits) and the construction sector flew under the radar in the first half of the year, quietly emerging as two of the most resilient performers on Bursa Malaysia. CIMB Securities said both sectors outperformed during the period, amid a volatile landscape where technology, healthcare and finance dominated the headlines. "For the first half of 2025, REITs and the construction sector were the strongest performers," the firm said in its June 2025 monthly wrap note. "The broader FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) declined 6.7 per cent over the same period, while technology and healthcare plunged 28.3 per cent and 21.4 per cent, respectively." CIMB Securities noted that construction stocks continued to attract steady support from local institutional investors. In June alone, the sector recorded RM130.8 million in net buying, the second-highest among all sectors after utilities. Reits also attracted balanced interest, with local institutions and foreign investors registering net inflows of RM20 million and RM62.5 million, respectively. Year-to-date, the FBM KLCI remains down 6.7 per cent despite recording a 1.6 per cent month-on-month gain in June, equivalent to a 24-point increase. CIMB Securities said optimism in the market continues to hinge on several unresolved factors. "We expect the market to remain range-bound in the near term owing to concerns over potential earnings risks from the expanded Sales and Service Tax and uncertainty surrounding the United States tariff outcome on July 9," it said. It added the potential removal of subsidies and other fiscal reforms, particularly fuel subsidy rationalisation, may have implications for inflation, consumer spending and overall market direction.
