PM says it exceeds target for mission to tackle poverty
THE corporate sector has pledged RM120mil to the 'Sejahtera Madani' initiative, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says.
He said this figure was more than double the original target of RM50mil.
'The Sejahtera Madani initiative marks a new chapter in the government's approach to tackling poverty and hardcore poverty.
'The programme brings together private sector and government efforts through targeted interventions in education, income generation, housing and welfare,' he said in a social media post.
Anwar said the initiative was part of the Madani government's mission to eradicate hardcore poverty.
'Since 2023, nearly 150,000 households have moved out of the hardcore poor category.
'My hope is that through Sejahtera Madani, we can fully lift them out of the cycle of poverty.'
He said the Government would continue to coordinate efforts under the initiative.
'Whether large or small, what matters is the sincerity and willingness to go to the ground and contribute time, energy and expertise for our shared well-being.
'Malaysia is a great nation with big-hearted people.
'With the spirit of Sejahtera Madani, let us work together to build a fairer, more inclusive and prosperous future, without leaving behind anyone,' the Prime Minister added.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia was among the few countries that stood firm on protecting key national policies during trade negotiations with the United States (US), Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim told Parliament on Tuesday. Anwar said Malaysia rejected several US demands, including challenges to the country's pro-Bumiputera policy, an affirmative action programme that benefits the majority ethnic Malays and other indigenous communities. "We still managed to secure a 19 per cent tariff rate. Most importantly, we defended the Bumiputera policy, which the US considers discriminatory and contrary to international trade principles. "But we stood firm, Malaysia must uphold this policy, and in the end, it was accepted," he said during ministerial question time in the Dewan Rakyat. Anwar said that while Malaysia maintained its position on non-negotiable issues, it took a pragmatic stance on others, particularly those involving trade mechanisms such as import and export regulations. "I didn't want to risk tariff rates of 25 per cent or even 40 per cent. Malaysia is a trading nation, and the US is one of our major trade partners. "It's easy to score symbolic victories at home, but the country could suffer, and hundreds of thousands of people would feel the impact. "As Prime Minister, I have to protect the people's interests," he said. He added that the government was willing to make concessions where possible, not only with the US, but also with other trading partners, including China. Meanwhile, touching on the Malaysia Aviation Group's (MAG) purchase of Boeing aircraft, the Prime Minister said it was MAG's decision and that Boeing was not the only aircraft model being acquired by the airline. "We are also buying from Airbus, and I had brought up the fact that Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and AirAsia will be purchasing larger aircraft from Airbus during my discussion with French President Emmanuel Macron," he said. He added that both Boeing and Airbus have set up their manufacturing facilities here in Malaysia, and highlighted that the purchase agreement with Boeing includes a condition that Boeing must set up some of its aircraft manufacturing operations in Malaysia.

Anwar assures Parliament debt under control
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim backed the government's borrowing plan, saying that loans are directed towards the national developments rather than operational expenditure. Anwar, who is also finance minister, said the national debt remains under control and the figures exclude borrowings by the private sector. "We are not borrowing for operating expenses. We are borrowing, and at a reduced amount, for development expenditure. "Why? Because of the condition of our schools, our hospitals, rural areas and flood-prone areas," he told the Dewan Rakyat today. He was responding to Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (PN-Kuala Kangsar) on whether the government has managed the national debt responsibly, given that it has risen from RM1,079.1 billion in 2022 to RM1,247.6 billion by the end of 2024, approaching 65 per cent of the gross domestic product. Anwar said the government was committed to reducing the fiscal deficit gradually, to ensure national debt levels continue to decrease. He said the debt rate would increase if the fiscal deficit remains high, adding that it needed to be reduced in stages. Anwar said the government's fiscal consolidation efforts had already led to a year-on-year decrease in new borrowings from RM100 billion in 2021 to RM76.8 billion in 2024. "In 2022, the deficit was 5.5 percent until it was reduced to 4.1 per cent in 2024 because our target is to reduce the deficit in phases. "This step is being implemented in phases because if it is done suddenly, the additional allocation for education, Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah and health will be hampered. "So, the deficit must be reduced but if we continue to spend wastefully, then the debt will reach too high." Anwar added that the government's commitment to a responsible fiscal policy had helped boost investor confidence, both foreign and domestic. "If we make an announcement, we want to implement responsible economic policies. But if the deficit continues to deplete, it is considered irresponsible. "That is why the deficit must be reduced and this is certainly burdening, meaning that only a firm and courageous government can do it.
