Le Mans 2025: Ferrari on track for hat-trick after strong overnight performance

The Hindu15-06-2025

Defending champions Ferrari was heading for a third straight win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, after leading the 93rd edition of the race through the night and into Sunday morning at the Sarthe circuit.
With six hours remaining, the number 51 factory 499P car of 2023 winners Alessandro Pier Guidi, Antonio Giovinazzi and James Calado led the number 83 AF Corse entry of Robert Kubica, Yifei Yi and Philip Hanson by some six seconds.
The number 50 factory car crewed by last year's winners Antonio Fuoco, Nicklas Nielsen and Miguel Molina completed the lockout of the podium places.
Porsche Penske's number six hypercar, which had led at the halfway stage after a safety car period, was fourth and Toyota's number eight car fifth.
With six hours being the regular length of a World Endurance Championship race, and temperatures rising, there was however still plenty of room for late drama.
The number 51 Ferrari had already fought back from eighth place after a puncture, a five second penalty and 20 second stop and go punishment to retake the lead by dawn.

Swiss tennis great Roger Federer had waved the French flag to get the race underway on Saturday afternoon, with Porsche immediately seizing the lead from pole-sitters Cadillac.
Cadillac had swept the front row in Thursday's qualifying but any advantage was short-lived as Porsche Penske's Julien Andlauer slipstreamed into the lead from third on the grid before the first chicane on the opening lap.
'We're trying to hang in there, but it's tough out on track to be honest,' said Sebastien Bourdais, who shares the number 38 Cadillac with 2009 Formula One champion Jenson Button and was in ninth place.
'We're struggling with tyre degradation. And we're struggling with the balance.'
Ferrari worked their way to the front and Fuoco took the lead in the third hour on the run from Mulsanne to Indianapolis with the three Ferraris running 1-2-3 at the quarter distance.
The BMW driven by Italy's MotoGP great Valentino Rossi had to retire in the LMGT3 category.
The race at the circuit in north-west France features 62 cars shared by 186 drivers from 34 countries, and is the fourth round of the World Endurance Championship, with 21 hypercars in the battle for overall victory.
Organisers have put the total weekend attendance at more than 300,000 spectators.
Ferrari will be able to keep the trophy at their Maranello factory if the works team completes a hat-trick on Sunday.

Lewis Hamilton Salutes Ferrari For 'Mega-Progress' With Updates

Lewis Hamilton saluted his Ferrari team on Sunday for the "mega progress" they made at the Austrian Grand Prix where he finished fourth behind Charles Leclerc. "That's mega-progress for us as a team today," said the seven-time champion. "Thanks to all the guys at the factory for the upgrades this weekend which looked only small on paper, but were massive for us in performance. "We're not a minute down on McLaren and that's positive and I am happy with it even if I am still struggling with the balance of the car in the race. "We keep working at it and we made progress this weekend and we found a problem with my brakes and that's positive too. So we are improving and everyone in the team is happier. "And we were much calmer and more methodical too so I am proud of them for that." Leclerc said: "We are working in the right direction and our upgrades helped us to close the gap. But it is still a significant gap to McLaren but we had a positive weekend overall and we maximised our potential." Ferraris success behind the two McLarens of race victor Lando Norris and championship leader Oscar Piastri enabled them to overtake Mercedes in the constructors title race and move up to second. There were smiles too at Sauber and Aston Martin after Gabriel Bortoleto and two-time champion Fernando Alonso respectively finished seventh and eighth. It was Brazilian Bortoleto's first points scoring finish in Formula One and his delight was shared by Alonso who held him off in the closing laps – because the Spaniard is also his manager. Alonso was the first to congratulate him with a hug after the race. "I am so happy for him," he said. "I know how much it means to score those first points."

Red Bull 'Not Strong Enough' To Oust McLaren: Max Verstappen After Dismal Austrian GP Quali

Last Updated: Max Verstappen expressed frustration after a disappointing qualifying session at the Austrian Grand Prix, where McLaren's Lando Norris took pole. The truth may sting, but Max Verstappen appears to have moved beyond frustration—at least outwardly—after a disappointing qualifying session at the Austrian Grand Prix. The Red Bull star acknowledged that his team is currently nowhere near the pace of rivals McLaren, who dominated Saturday's session. Lando Norris delivered a stunning final lap to seize pole position at the Red Bull Ring, halting Verstappen's recent dominance in qualifying at his team's home track. The 25-year-old Briton posted a blistering time of 1:03.971, finishing over half a second ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc (+0.521s). McLaren's Oscar Piastri, the current championship leader, secured third on the grid. Verstappen's final attempt was thwarted by a yellow flag caused by Pierre Gasly's spin in his Alpine. Like Piastri, the Dutchman was forced to abandon his flying lap and ended the session in seventh place. 'Car Felt Bad Everywhere" 'The whole of qualifying didn't go well at all," he admitted. 'There was no corner where the car felt good, so that is a huge problem in qualifying. It wasn't nice to drive at all. 'I don't think we're strong enough to challenge the McLarens… They're at another level, but hopefully tomorrow we can at least be competitive with Ferrari or Mercedes." Charles Leclerc was encouraged by Ferrari's qualifying result and believes the team's race pace could bring them closer to the front runners. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton qualified a solid fourth for Ferrari, followed closely by Mercedes' George Russell in fifth. Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson impressed in sixth, ahead of a frustrated Verstappen in seventh and Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto in eighth. Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli continued to show promise with a ninth-place finish in the second Mercedes, while Gasly rounded out the top ten despite causing the yellow flag that disrupted the final runs.
