Beijing issues new storm warning after deadly floods
Representative image BEIJING: Beijing issued its highest alert for rainstorms on Monday, days after deadly deluges swept parts of the Chinese capital and triggered a rare apology from under-prepared officials. The municipal weather service announced a red alert, the highest in a four-tier system, forecasting heavy rain from noon on Monday until Tuesday morning. Most parts of the city are expected to see 100 millimetres (four inches) of rain during a six-hour period overnight, but outlying areas could experience between 150mm and 200mm, authorities said. "There is an extremely high risk of flash floods, mudslides, landslips and other natural disasters in mountain areas," the Beijing government said on an official social media account. "Citizens are advised not to go outside unless necessary," it said. Tens of thousands of people in northern China were evacuated as torrential rains wreaked havoc in parts of the north since last month. Beijing was struck hard last week, when floods in its northern suburbs killed at least 44 people and left nine missing, according to official figures. Some 31 fatalities occurred at an elderly care centre in Miyun district, prompting a local official to admit "gaps" in disaster readiness. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Residents in flood-hit areas told AFP reporters at the scene that they had been surprised at the speed with which the rushing water inundated homes and devastated villages. The city water authority on Monday again listed Miyun as highly vulnerable to flooding, alongside Fangshan, Mentougou and Huairou districts, according to state news agency Xinhua. Natural disasters are common across China, particularly in the summer, when some regions experience heavy rain while others bake in searing heat. China is the world's biggest emitter of the greenhouse gases that drive climate change and contribute to making extreme weather more frequent and intense. But it is also a global renewable energy powerhouse that aims to make its massive economy carbon-neutral by 2060.

In response to the deteriorating situation, all boats running on the Ganga have been banned. Several Varanasi residents were seen wading through knee-deep water. Waterlogging caused traffic snarls in the city. Live Events Taking stock of the flood crisis, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had directed all ministers in charge to immediately visit their assigned districts, inspect relief camps, and directly engage with affected families. He instructed senior officials--including DMs, SPs, and CMOs--to stay on the ground and ensure 24x7 monitoring, said a release on Saturday. The Chief Minister has deployed an 11-member ministerial team to oversee relief operations across 12 affected districts, warning that any negligence will not be tolerated and stressing the need for sensitivity, speed and transparency. The Chief Minister emphasised that the supply of relief materials and food packets must be timely and of high quality, with no compromise on standards. Emphasising urgency, he ordered round-the-clock surveillance of embankments, swift drainage from waterlogged areas, and comprehensive arrangements for food, medicine, sanitation, and the needs of women and children in relief camps. The Chief Minister affirmed that the state government is fully committed to ensuring the safety, food, shelter, and healthcare of every citizen affected by the floods. According to IMD, isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Uttar Pradesh during 3rd-6th August.

Raj receives 79% excess rainfall this year; monsoon expected to revive from Aug 9
1 2 Jaipur: Rajasthan has so far received 79% excess rainfall as compared to 2024. Most of the dams and reservoirs are brimming with water. However, the rainfall activity subsided on Sunday, and the Met office has forecast that in the coming days there will be a decrease in rainfall activity across the state. And still, there are four spells of monsoon rainfall left, and it appears that the state is likely to get double the rainfall compared to what was recorded last year," said an officer with the Jaipur Met office.
