Malawian president hails Chinese contractor for "outstanding" project
Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera awarded the contractor a trophy on Tuesday during the commemoration of National Construction Day held in the national capital of Lilongwe.
CCECC's project, featuring the construction of a 4.2-km Kenyatta Road linking Lilongwe Old Town to Lilongwe City Center, stood out among many nominated projects.
The new six-lane road, which is nearly complete, has reduced travel time from the city center to the old town from about an hour to about 10 minutes during peak hours.
Speaking at the National Construction Day celebrations, Chakwera praised several construction projects implemented during his term, including those undertaken by Chinese contractors.
The Malawian government also recognized local veteran architects for their outstanding contributions to the country's construction industry.
Meanwhile, CCECC is constructing the Kaphatenga-Dwangwa (M005) road, reconstructing it to a bituminous standard with an asphaltic concrete surface. The road is part of the lakeshore road on the coastal plain between Lake Malawi and the plateau to the west.

The breakthrough represents a significant achievement in itself, situated beneath more than 750 meters of mountainous terrain, the company said in a statement following a ceremony to mark the occasion. Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook, who officiated the ceremony, told a press briefing that the breakthrough also highlights the successful cooperation between the two countries in the field of railway engineering. "The ECRL is also touted as a 'game changer' for the movement of passengers and freight in Peninsular Malaysia, as this rail infrastructure will link state capitals, major urban centres, industrial hubs, seaports, airports, and tourism zones while interchanging with existing railway lines along the ECRL corridor," he added. "The Genting Tunnel breakthrough also signals the completion of excavation works for all 41 ECRL tunnels along the 665-km alignment. This major milestone highlights the strong collaboration and dedication among ECRL personnel at all levels in carrying out tunnel excavation works with meticulous planning and robust safety protocols," Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) Chief Executive Officer Darwis Abdul Razak noted. Located within the Titiwangsa mountain range, the Genting Tunnel was the most technically challenging of the 41 tunnels constructed along the ECRL alignment, being constructed with the use of advanced tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and drill-and-blast techniques in highly complex and varied geological conditions. Explaining the challenges of working under these conditions and the use of high-technology methods to overcome them, Chen Jianfeng, deputy general manager of CCCC Second Highway Engineering Co., Ltd., told Xinhua that China's TBM technology is among the world's most advanced and well-suited to handle these challenges. "The Genting Tunnel has highly complex geological conditions, including water ingress, rock bursts, soft surrounding rock, and six fault zones along the alignment. Due to these challenges, we chose the TBM method, which offers greater safety, stability, and efficiency for tunneling under such difficult conditions," he said. He also emphasized that the Chinese side has worked well with the Malaysian side to share knowledge and integrate processes, not only by bringing in advanced machinery and expertise but also by incorporating localization. "Throughout the construction process in Malaysia, we have placed strong emphasis on localization while continuously working towards the integration of Chinese and Malaysian standards -- a key focus of our efforts. During the project, we incorporated a wide range of local Malaysian elements and actively nurtured local talent," he said. "Many Malaysian technical personnel have been sent to China for training. Looking ahead, the ECRL will be operated through a joint China-Malaysia partnership, with both parties working together as part of an integrated operation and maintenance team," he added. With the completion of all tunnelling works, the ECRL project now moves into its next phase, which includes track installation, electrification, signaling and communication systems, as well as station interior fit-outs. All works remain on schedule and aligned with the project's master timeline. The ECRL extends from Malaysia's largest transport hub, Port Klang, and runs across the peninsula to the northeastern Kelantan state. The railway is expected to greatly enhance connectivity and bring more balanced growth to the country by linking its less-developed region on the east coast to the economic heartland on the west coast.

US President Donald Trump's administration is expanding scrutiny of Chinese and other foreign ownership of American farmland and starting to cancel agricultural contracts with entities from 'countries of concern' amid apprehension over the national security risks of such foreign involvement. As part of a new seven-part National Farm Security Action Plan, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins told reporters on Tuesday that 'swift legislative and executive action' would be taken at 'every level of government' to 'ban the purchase of American farmland by Chinese nationals and other foreign adversaries'. The Agriculture Department will also target research and innovation programmes with foreign countries 'that do not have our best interests in mind'. Rollins said that the department has already cancelled seven active agreements with entities from countries of concern – a designation that includes China, Iran, Russia, North Korea – and will continue to cancel them, along with removing foreign citizens from federal contracts. 'American agriculture is not just about feeding our families, but about protecting our nation and standing up to foreign adversaries who are buying our farmland, stealing our research and creating dangerous vulnerabilities in the very systems that sustain us,' Rollins said, citing China as a 'hostile regime' that sees the American way of life as a 'profound and existential threat'. The Agriculture Department, according to Rollins, is coordinating with the White House; the departments of Treasury, Defence, Homeland Security, and Justice; and state governors, agriculture commissioners, and local, tribal, and territorial governments to carry out the plan. That enforcement action against Syngenta, which was acquired by China National Chemical Corporation, was the first taken under legislation signed by Republican Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders restricting foreign entities from owning agricultural land in the state. Sanders was one of the governors present at Tuesday's event. In her remarks, she emphasised the need for a federal effort to curb land purchases by US 'enemies', noting that while states have led the way, they could not address the issue alone. Tuesday's National Farm Security Action Plan sets up a new portal for reporting foreign farm investments and raises the fine for late and false filings. Rollins also said to expect an executive order on foreign land purchases from the White House 'very soon'. Responding to Rollins' remarks, the Chinese embassy in Washington said that the US was 'overstretching' the concept of national security.
