As Real ID deadline for U.S. air travel approaches, there are ‘workarounds,' experts say
The Real ID card is an optional, upgraded driver's license or state identification card that is issued by a state driver's licensing agency and marked with a star.
The good news: There are other forms of identification U.S. travelers can use — such as a valid U.S. passport, passport card, permanent resident card, or certain Department of Homeland Security trusted traveler cards — if they can't get a Real ID by the deadline, May 7.
'There are workarounds people can use,' said John Breyault, a travel expert at the National Consumers League, a consumer advocacy group. 'Most people already have the ability to travel, whether they have a Real ID or not.'
About 19% of travelers don't yet have a Real ID-compliant type of identification, according to Transportation Security Administration data as of Thursday.
Passengers who arrive at the airport without an acceptable form of ID 'can expect to face delays, additional screening and the possibility of not being permitted into the security checkpoint,' according to the TSA.
Even passengers who have a Real ID card or other acceptable ID should aim to be at the airport at least 1½ hours ahead of their flight, due to likely delays in airport security lines as enforcement gets underway, Breyault said.
What is the Real ID law?
Congress passed the Real ID Act in 2005. The law set minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and ID cards.
The federal government will require Americans who access federal facilities to have a Real ID starting May 7. That includes travelers who go through TSA airport security checkpoints and board commercial airplanes, even for domestic flights.
The rule applies to all airline passengers 18 years and older, including TSA PreCheck members.
How to get around the Real ID rule
Travelers can skirt the requirement to present a Real ID card if they have other types of approved identification.
Experts said the most common among them are: a passport or passport card; a Global Entry card; an enhanced driver's license issued by Washington state, Michigan, Minnesota, New York or Vermont; or a permanent resident card, also known as a green card.
Here's a list of all acceptable alternatives, according to the TSA:

'Get that Real ID'
It may be somewhat riskier to travel with an alternative document such as a passport for domestic flights, said Sally French, a travel expert at NerdWallet.
'A passport is much more complicated to replace than a driver's license, and it's more expensive,' French said. 'Get that Real ID.'
A traditional passport book costs $130 to renew. Real ID fees vary by state but are generally less costly, experts said. They typically aren't more expensive than a standard driver's license.
For example, in California it costs $45 to renew a standard driver's license or $39 to renew a regular ID card; in Virginia, there's a $10 one-time Real ID fee, plus a driver's license fee, usually $32.
Desperate travelers can also gamble by showing up at the airport without a Real ID-compliant form of identification on May 7 and beyond, and hope airport agents show some mercy, French said.
It's a 'much longer screening' process and isn't guaranteed, French said. It's a 'Hail Mary,' she said.

O'Hare just beat its own record for the airport's busiest day ever
The days of speeding through the airport are becoming more and more of a challenge when flying out of or connecting through Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. It's no surprise that O'Hare is a busy airport, and the expanded daily flights from various carriers like United and American Airlines doesn't help. While more options can be a fortuitous thing, especially if you're looking for a direct flight or a good deal, travelers should expect delays and plan accordingly. Tips for traveling through O'Hare as speedily as possible: Can you fly on a weekday or take a red-eye flight? Avoiding travel over holidays or school vacation days may help. Make sure you've downloaded the air carrier's app, saving your mobile ticket to your phone. Avoid wearing belts, overcoats and sweaters, or clunky items that you'll have to remove prior to getting through security. Remember to empty your water bottle. And, if you don't have TSA Pre-check, you'll need to take out your larger digital devices like laptops and iPads and place them in the security bins separately. Remember that fluids over 3.4 ounces aren't allowed in your carry-on. And though you no longer need to remove your shoes, be sure to empty your pockets!

Is the West Park Hotel hosting asylum seekers in Clydebank?
Rumours on social media over the weekend have spread, suggesting that "migrants" were seen entering the hotel on Great Western Road. Further accusations suggested the hotel was closed for renovations as a ruse to disguise the "coachloads of asylum seekers and immigrants pouring off the buses and being ushered into the hotel quickly." The Glasgow Times got in touch with the owners of the hotel and the Home Office to investigate these claims. Yatin Bhimani, owner of the West Park Hotel. (Image: Newsquest) Yatin Bhimani bought the hotel in June with a dream of expanding his tour business and offering his tourist guests a place to stay in a hotel he owned. Responding to the claims, Mr Bhimani says the rumours have been "damaging". He explained: "Last weekend, Friday night and Saturday night, I had 48 passengers and they all were family; husband, wife, children. "I think we had around 22 elderly people who were more than 60 years. That was the group who stayed last weekend, and I was there myself. "Someone took the picture. In a post, they said that two coaches full of migrants were dropped here. "It's a wrong post, and since then, we have been getting lots of trouble. Lots of people are calling because they are getting the wrong information. "It is damaging to our impression, and I don't know why they're doing this. "These wrong, false rumours are just destroying everything." West Dunbartonshire Council and the [[Home Office]] have both confirmed that the hotel is not in use as accommodation for asylum seekers. Mr Bhimani invited our reporter to the hotel and took them on a tour, explaining to our reporter some of the renovations they are planning to transform the hotel with. These include the introduction of a new Indian restaurant, modernisation of bedrooms and redecorating the function rooms. Mr Bhimani continued: "We are a tour company and have been in business since 2009, and have been doing tours in Scotland since 2012. "In our Indian community, we are very popular at taking people to Scotland for three days, and we show them around. "We are always staying in Glasgow or nearby Glasgow for two nights. "Finally, we decided that we should have our own hotel so we can give better comfort to our customers, and that's why we bought the West Park Hotel last month. "We wanted the hotel, but it's a little old and there are many issues. So we decided to go for a refurbishment now." MP Douglas McAllister has condemned the rumours as highly dangerous. "I contacted [[West Dunbartonshire Council]] on Monday to receive confirmation that prior to any decision to announce the accommodation of asylum seekers into properties within a local authority, including the [[West Dunbartonshire Council]] area, there is a requirement for the UK Government and Mears to consult with that local authority in advance. "The leader of West Dunbartonshire Council confirmed to me that there has been no such consultation with West Dunbartonshire Council, and there is no substance or truth to these rumours whatsoever." The West Dunbartonshire MP says not all the correspondence he has received has been negative. He added: "I was also pleased to receive telephone calls to my office this week from constituents who have expressed their concerns regarding the nature of the Facebook Posts. My constituents were particularly distressed by the language used in the posts, which is harmful and racist. "The nature of the social media posts and the spreading of false rumours are at best unhelpful, and at worst, highly dangerous. We have all witnessed incidents of gangs of far-right protesters gathering outside hotels that house asylum seekers.
