Eflin goes seven scoreless innings and Orioles beat White Sox 2-1

BALTIMORE (AP) — Zach Eflin allowed four hits over seven shutout innings and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Chicago White Sox 2-1 on Friday.
Eflin (4-2) struck out six and walked one in his first scoreless outing this season while lowering his ERA nearly a run to 4.46.
Ramón Urías broke a scoreless tie with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly off Sean Burke (3-6). Ryan Mountcastle then swiped home on a double steal, then left before the eighth inning with right hamstring discomfort.
Bryan Baker worked a perfect eighth in a game originally scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m. that was moved up to 4:30 p.m. because of expected inclement weather in the area, before Felix Bautista gave up Andrew Benintendi's RBI double in the ninth then stranded two for his ninth save.
Burke worked six innings after opener Jared Shuster worked an inning plus a batter as the White Sox fell to .200 (6-24) on the road.
Key moment
Chicago's Miguel Vargas singled and Benintendi walked to put two on with one out in the seventh. Eflin escaped by striking out Luis Robert Jr. swinging and Joshua Palacios Jr. looking, the latter on a 3-2 cutter that home plate umpire D.J. Rayburn said caught the outer corner of the zone.
Key stat
Eflin got within six batters of completing his fourth career shutout and his first since 2020. His last nine-inning shutout helped Philadelphia win 7-0 win at Kansas City on May 11, 2019.
Up next
Chicago right-hander Davis Martin (2-5, 3.45 ERA) will try to extend his streak of quality starts to four on Saturday after yielding only five combined runs in his last three outings (20 IP). He faces Orioles right-hander Dean Kremer (4-5-, 5.02), who is looking for consecutive wins after pitching 5 1/3 scoreless frames in a 5-1 victory at Boston last Sunday.

Rodrigo De Paul to join Leo Messi at Inter Miami, AP source says

Associated Press FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Another close friend of Lionel Messi will soon play in South Florida. Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul has agreed to contract terms with Inter Miami, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The 31-year-old De Paul will leave Atlético Madrid — where he's played for four years — for Major League Soccer on a short-term contract with Inter Miami that could potentially lead to a multiyear deal. He had one year left on his contract at Atlético Madrid. ESPN first reported the deal. De Paul and national team buddy Messi hope to continue to elevate Inter Miami, which has reached historic heights since Messi's arrival in 2023. De Paul could be in uniform with Inter Miami in time for the start of Leagues Cup play later this month, though his exact arrival date is uncertain, said the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the signing has not been announced. The deal, which has been in the works for several weeks, comes as negotiations between Messi and Inter Miami on a contract extension remain ongoing. The nine-time Ballon d'Or winner's current contract expires at the end of December, and he is expected to return to the club that he's played with for the past two years. The signing of De Paul adds another veteran with whom Messi already has chemistry, along with 37-year-old Sergio Busquets, Luis Suarez, 38, and Jordi Alba, 36. De Paul has been a key player for Atlético Madrid since joining the Spanish club from Italian team Udinese in 2021. He helped Argentina win the World Cup in 2022 and was part of Copa America victories in 2021 and 2024. Messi and Inter Miami are coming off a historic season in 2024 in which they finished with the best record in MLS history and the best winning percentage in league history, only to be quickly bounced from the MLS playoffs. They're on track to again be in contention for the MLS Supporters' Shield. ___ AP Sports Writer Tim Reynolds contributed from Las Vegas. ___ AP soccer: recommended Item 1 of 1

Baylee Klingler, Blaze, win first AUSL series with 10-2 barrage on Sis Bates, Volts

Former Washington Huskies stars Baylee Klingler and Sis Bates wrapped up a three-game series at Husky Softball Stadium on Sunday afternoon as part of the inaugural season of the Athletes Unlimited Softball League, with the Klingler-led Blaze taking the series 2-1 behind a 10-2 win over the Bates-led Volts in the rubber match. Duke product Ana Gold led the offensive onslaught for the Blaze, going 3-for-3 with a walk and 4 runs batted in on the day. She blasted a solo home run in the second inning, one of three homers for the Blaze on the day, and added an RBI single in the sixth inning, along with a two-run single in the seventh. Klingler was an integral part of the Blaze's offense, reaching base twice. She poked an RBI double down the right field line in the sixth inning, and walked and scored a run in the seventh as her team won its first series of the season. In the series, Klingler, who was a three-time All-American during her career on Montlake, went 5-for-11 with a walk, 3 doubles, 3 RBIs, and 3 runs scored, continuing her long tradition of spraying the ball all over the diamond in Seattle. On the other side, Bates had a quiet day at the plate as she went 0-for-2 with a walk. Over the weekend, the three-time All-American and Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year went 3-for-9, collecting all three of her hits during the Volts' only win of the weekend on Friday. Next up, Bates and the Volts will travel to Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas, for a four-game series against the Bandits, while Klingler and the Blaze are off to Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah, for four games against the Talons.
