Man City 'crazy' to let De Bruyne go

BBC News14-04-2025
Kevin De Bruyne might have inspired Manchester City's comeback against Crystal Palace but it was his post-match comments that have got people talking."They took a decision and now I am okay with it," said the playmaker on him leaving City at the end of the season. His words heavily implying that it was the club's decision to part ways this summer than his own."It's crazy to me, but it is the business we are in," said Nigel Reo-Coker on the BBC Radio 5 Live Football Daily podcast. "The beast of the business."If you have a player with the quality of Kevin de Bruyne, then to me you give him a year's contract."Even if he is not at the physical level needed, he doesn't have to play every single game. The experience that he brings there and the way he can set the culture for the next generation at City is priceless."It's a hard pill to swallow for De Bruyne when the club make that decision."Listen to the Football Daily podcast on BBC Sounds

Lucas Paqueta's lawyer claims gambling charges cost West Ham star Premier League medal

West Ham star Lucas Paqueta has been cleared of betting breaches after a two-year investigation by the Football Association and his lawyer has now spoken out about the situation Lucas Paqueta may have cleared his name over the gambling charges that have hung over him for the last two years - but the man who led the Brazilian's legal defence believes the episode has cost him a Premier League medal. ‌ Paqueta, 27, was on the brink of an £85million move from West Ham to Manchester City when it emerged that he was being investigated by the FA over suspicions that he had deliberately got himself booked in four different games as part of a spot-fixing sting. ‌ An independent commission ruled during the week that the FA had failed to prove their case - although two charges claiming that the midfielder failed to cooperate with the process were upheld. ‌ Now Alastair Campbell, a partner at the law firm Level, has revealed how the case has taken a heavy toll on Paqueta - despite the positive outcome. Campbell said: 'Lucas' life has basically been on hold for the last two years. 'He woke up every morning with the fear that this could be the day when his career was going to be over. Of course, Lucas is delighted with the outcome of the commission - but what shouldn't be forgotten is that there is an alternative universe where he moves to Manchester City and now has a Premier League winner's medal. 'The strain he has been under since the charges were announced in August 2023 has been incredible. That's something that shouldn't be forgotten in all of this. This case has come at a considerable cost to Lucas, both as a person and as a professional footballer.' Paqueta's legal team are now awaiting the commission's written findings before whether to appeal against the decision that he failed to give investigators the required help. There have also been suggestions that he could now sue the FA for damages. Campbell, however, accepts that the FA has a duty to make sure that the game they govern is clean. He said: 'I've seen suggestions that it's embarrassing for the FA, but I don't agree with that because their role as a regulator means they have to bring charges if they feel there's a case to answer. 'Lucas has now answered those charges and I am sure the FA's legal team will take some valuable lessons from this because that's what good lawyers do. The integrity of sport is paramount. ‌ 'We have to believe that what we are seeing on the pitch is genuine, so all governing bodies must monitor this kind of thing. The charges brought against Lucas were incredibly serious and that brings a requirement for real care to be taken. 'The sheer scale of evidence and information from both sides has been massive. That's why this has taken two years.' Campbell added: 'Lucas was very emotional when I told him about the decision. ‌ 'To have this weighing on his shoulders, knowing all along that he didn't do what he had been accused of, was unbearable at times. For him to still be able to play in front of 10s of thousands of people once or twice a week is remarkable. 'Given that mental strength, I think he will get past this issue pretty quickly and get back to being the fantastic player he is.'

Celtic hero Odsonne Edouard ‘finally finds new club as striker ends transfer speculation with stunning move'

ODSONNE EDOUARD is finally closing in on a move away from Crystal Palace and will leave England altogether in a stunning swoop, it's being claimed. The Celtic hero is set to end his Selhurst Park nightmare after four years down south, joining the club from the Hoops back in 2021. 2 Odsonne Edouard has endured a difficult spell at Selhurst Park Credit: Reuters 2 The striker is on his way out Credit: Getty Out-of-favour Edouard, 27, hasn't played for Palace since last August as he was shipped out on loan to Leicester City last season. But things didn't improve for the Frenchman at the King Power stadium as he remained a backup option for the Foxes and wasn't favoured by Rudd van Nistelrooy when he took charge in November. He hasn't kicked a ball since coming off the bench as a substitute in the 88th minute against Manchester United that same month. But Edouard will be hoping to get his career back on track in his first move away from the UK since leaving PSG to join Celtic initially on loan in 2017 - then permanently the following year. The striker is believed to be on his way to Spain for the first time of his career. According to FootMercato, Edouard is set to be announced as Girona's newest recruit in a surprise swap deal. It's stated that the forward will move to the La Liga club for around €6million (£5.2m), while Arnau Martinez will head in the other direction in a deal worth around €10million (£8.7m). It's a move that will see the Frenchman link up with former Aberdeen hitman Bojan Miovski. The two players have something in common - other than both being strikers. Aside from that, they are two players who Celtic fans have been urging Brendan Rodgers to sign in recent months. Celtic transfer special as Rodgers lands SEVENTH signing, Hoops eye winger & left-back latest Miovski was a target for the Hoops when he left Pittodrie for Girona last year, while Celtic fans have been crying out for Edouard's return this summer. Rodgers has been hunting for a striker since January and could still sign another before the end of the window, despite already landing Shin Yamada and Callum Osmand. Rodgers was the manager who brought Edouard to Glasgow eight years ago and he's been linked with a return swoop for the hitman all summer. He did, however, confirm last month that he WASN'T looking at a deal for the former fan favourite. Rodgers said: 'Odsonne hasn't been on my radar, to be fair. 'I obviously know him but it's about a player who will fit into the structure of the team.' Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Oliver Glasner says his Crystal Palace side have taken a "step forward" from their pre-season camp in Austria and he is now eyeing an upset against Liverpool in the Community Eagles played two friendlies against Bundesliga outfit FC Augsburg on Friday, winning the first 3-1 before a 1-0 defeat in the second, which featured a more experimental line-up."I'm very satisfied with the first game," Glasner said. "It was a very, very good performance, creating lots of chances."Looking to next week's Wembley showpiece, he added: "When you have the chance to win silverware, go for it. We will go for it."We are facing the champions. A team who invested £300m, buying high-quality players. It is a great challenge. We will be ready. I don't expect they will be in the best possible shape, the same with us at the beginning of the season. We will go for winning the next trophy. When you have the chance to win a second trophy in three months, go for it."
