‘Ghost cars', a missing $10 million and the question: victim or fraudster?

The Age08-06-2025
Was An Chen part of a group of alleged swindlers, helping to clear $3.8 million worth of fraudulently obtained car loans? Or was the 25-year-old a victim of the same group, yet another innocent person duped by scammers in pursuit of millions of dollars?
This is the question that will need to be answered by the courts, after Chen became the sixth person charged by detectives looking at an alleged luxury car fraud racket.
Police say the group took over $10 million worth of loans from a western Sydney car financing group in the names of at least 33 individuals. The only problem? These individuals hadn't taken out car loans and never saw the dozens of Teslas or Mercedes-Benzes that were bought using their stolen identity documents.
The money from the so-called 'ghost car' loans was then laundered by members of the syndicate, police say.
The $10 million remains unrecovered.
An employee of the financing group, and Chen, a 25-year-old Chinese national in Australia on a protection visa and with no local family, are among the half a dozen charged over the alleged fraud.
Over a nine-month period in 2023, a company bank account allegedly received a total of $3.8 million across 15 transactions worth hundreds of thousands of dollars each. Police documents tendered to the court claim Chen was the sole signatory on the bank account and is the sole director of the company.
He now faces 15 counts of recklessly dealing with the proceeds of crime.

$1m reward to identify puppet masters of underworld hit

Police are setting their sights on the masterminds of an underworld hit, offering a $1 million reward for information. Robert Issa, 27, was gunned down at Craigieburn Central Shopping Centre in Melbourne's north almost two years ago. Four men wearing balaclavas surrounded Mr Issa's Mercedes SUV in October 2023, firing multiple shots into the passenger side and rear windows. He was killed and another man, a now 30-year-old from Hadfield, was taken to hospital in a serious condition. A black Range Rover was later found burnt out in Westmeadows. Five men were arrested in raids across Melbourne's north and east on Thursday and each charged with murder, attempted murder and criminal damage by fire. Detective Inspector Dean Thomas described the men as "foot soldiers", with police still working to identify those further up the chain who ordered, financed and organised the alleged hit. The murder allegedly involved more than just those in the car, Mr Thomas said. "We know there are others out there and we will take every step in this investigation to identify them," he said. "We have already made clear we will do everything we can to identify every single person involved in both the planning and the execution, and now there are one million reasons to come forward with any information you may have." Police allege Mr Issa had connections to several organised crime groups and suspect the shooting may be linked to Melbourne's long-running illegal tobacco wars. The Director of Public Prosecutions will consider granting indemnification from prosecution to anybody who provides information on the identity of the main offender or offenders.

Perth woman, 26, earns $10k-a-month doing job ‘no one else wants'

A Perth woman has revealed how she makes $10,000 a month working a job she says no one else wants. Ashlea, a FIFO worker, has amassed a large following documenting her life as a dump truck driver. The 26-year-old earns $120,000-a-year despite working for less than six months in a 52-week period, leaving plenty of time for her glamorous adventures, such as her recent trips to Bali, Finland, Saudi Arabia and Colombia. The average annual salary for full-time workers in Australia is approximately $102,741, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data from 2024. However, the median salary, which represents the middle point of all salaries, is around $88,400. In a recent video, Ashlea revealed that she recently splurged on her 'dream car', after six years of working in the mines, The Sun reports. 'I had this car on my vision board that I made about six years ago,' she said in the clip, before the camera pans to show a Mercedes convertible in a cream colour. 'I feel so grateful and like a bad b*tch.' She previously went viral in 2023 after detailing her schedule as a dump truck driver, working 14 days on and 14 days off in the Pilbara mines. 'When I first started as a greenie [new truck driver], for my first three months I was paid $36.50 an hour,' she said. 'And we do 12-hour days, often waking up at 4am for hectic shifts in the sweltering heat.' Just three months into her new job, she said her hourly pay jumped up to $43.50 an hour. She added: 'So quite a nice jump. And for my first year as a greenie, that would have taken me to approximately $94-$95,000 annually for the six months. 'So, pretty cool for a new truckie.' Her latest rate is about $51.50 an hour – and she gets a $2000 bonus each month she stays with her contracting company. 'So that could be anywhere between $6000 and $10,000 a month,' she explained. 'Annually, my $51.50 would be approximately $112,000. With my bonuses, that could be another $10,000, so $122,000 for my first year. 'And then when I'm employed directly with the company itself, every full year you're employed through the mine site direct, they pay you a bonus also which I think is approximately $3000 each year. 'And then if the company itself does well I think they actually pay you a bit of a profit share just as a thanks, which I love.' Another perk of the job is that her employer covers the cost of everything – including accommodation, food and flights. She added that she only works 22 weeks a year, which is less than half the year once her four weeks of annual leave are factored in. Despite being an advocate for female FIFO workers, Ashlea's viral fame has earned her the title of 'world's hottest' truck driver, according to some social media users. 'I had the biggest f**king LOL,' she said after learning of her nickname. 'It's a little bit too much responsibility but I appreciate it.'

This town's ‘bottom pub' is back open with big '70s energy and a committed young crew

Australia's smaller country towns usually follow the 'one of everything' rule: one pub, one fish and chip shop, one Chinese restaurant. Yackandandah, population 1100, is lucky enough to again have two pubs, after four mates reopened The Yack Hotel on Friday with surf-n-turf, pot pies and other pub crowd-pleasers that celebrate north-east producers. Known as the 'bottom pub', the two-storey venue three hours from Melbourne closed in September and had been untouched for more than 30 years, according to new owner Dale Kemp. In the four-month restoration, fake indoor plants were ditched – part of eight skips of rubbish cleared out – and black and grey paint was replaced with brown and cream. Green tartan carpet and amber bullion glass panels that channel the 1970s complete the cosy new look. 'It's really important when you walk into a pub, that you feel almost like you're at home,' Kemp says. 'The fire is going, you can hang out with friends, and have a conversation with the person behind the bar.'
