Bahrain's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic has laid the foundation for a far-reaching transformation in civil protection and crisis governance, according to a senior lawmaker.
MP Dr. Maryam Al-Dhaen said the Kingdom's pandemic response had demonstrated how trust, innovation, and citizen participation could be channelled into a long-term national safety strategy.
That experience, she noted, has now evolved into an integrated civil defence model focused on readiness, technology, and shared responsibility.
She pointed to current efforts that embed digital tools into emergency response frameworks, while simultaneously empowering society at large to play a greater role in public safety.
Smart tools, safer citizens One of the most visible changes is the rollout of the 'BeAware Bahrain' mobile application, which offers users real-time alerts, safety guidance, and interactive support in emergency scenarios.
Dr. Al-Dhaen described the app as a key part of Bahrain's shift from reactive crisis response to proactive community protection.
Complementing the app is the National Civil Protection Platform, an institutional framework designed to unify state and community efforts under a common strategy.
The platform, she said, reinforces Bahrain's advanced security culture and promotes an environment of resilience and awareness.
Shared responsibility
The government's civil protection efforts also include expanding the scope of preparedness across different sectors.
Dr. Al-Dhaen highlighted the recent civil defence training sessions conducted for Members of Parliament, calling it a clear sign that the responsibility for public safety is being shared across institutions.
'The concept of safety in Bahrain has become a shared responsibility between state institutions and society,' she said, noting that awareness campaigns and simulations have now reached multiple levels of government and civil society.
Leadership and coordination
Dr. Al-Dhaen credited His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa for leading a crisis governance model that prioritises regional stability and domestic readiness. She also praised the active role of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, in monitoring emergency procedures and enhancing national preparedness.
She further commended the Civil Defence Council, chaired by His Excellency Lieutenant General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Minister of Interior, for its role in strengthening preventive measures and coordination across agencies.
In closing, Dr. Al-Dhaen said Bahrain's civil protection system today reflects the lessons of its pandemic response, turning past challenges into future safeguards.

His contributions were central to the drafting of the 1973 Constitution and the shaping of Bahrain's modern civil law system. International influence Dr. Al Baharna's influence extended beyond the Kingdom. From 1987 to 2006, he served as Asia's representative on the United Nations International Law Commission. He also sat on the board of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration from 2003 to 2005, marking him as a global voice in legal reform and diplomacy. His written works reflect his deep engagement with regional and international legal frameworks. These include A Legal Study and Analysis of the Constitutional State of the Kingdom of Bahrain (2008), Iran's Claim to Sovereignty Over Bahrain (2008), and Political and Constitutional Developments of the Gulf States (2005). Legacy remembered Dr. Al Baharna was widely recognised for his contributions. He received the Arab Historian's Medal in 1986, Bahrain's First-Class State Order in 1996, and the First-Class Order of Shaikh Isa bin Salman in 2001. His legal writings, policy work, and diplomatic service earned him the respect of scholars and statesmen alike. His death marks the end of an era in Bahraini legal history, closing the chapter on one of the nation's most influential constitutional figures.

Huthis say fired missile at Israel
TDT | Sanaa Yemen's Iran-backed Huthi rebels said they fired a ballistic missile towards Israel yesterday, in response to Israel's conduct towards Palestinians during the Gaza war. In Israel, warning sirens sounded in several areas, before the army announced the 'missile was most likely successfully intercepted'. It was the first missile launch against Israel announced by the Huthis since the June 24 ceasefire between Israel and Iran which followed their 12- day war. In a statement, rebel military spokesman Yahya Saree said the Huthis had fired at a 'sensitive Israeli enemy target in the occupied area of Beersheba using a Dhu al-Fiqar ballistic missile'. The attack was in 'response to the crimes of the criminal Zionist enemy against civilians in the Gaza Strip', Saree added.

Omanis Citizens Earning RO600 Or Less Can Now Apply For Marriage Aid
Citizens of Muscat Governorate with monthly incomes of RO 600 or less are now eligible to apply for marriage support under a new government initiative. The activation of the Marriage Fund Support Request Service comes as part of royal directives to roll out marriage assistance across all governorates in Oman. The initiative, launched by Muscat Governorate, is intended to ease the financial burden of marriage for eligible Omani citizens and is accessible through the governorate's official website. To qualify, applicants must meet specific criteria: they must be Omani nationals between the ages of 22 and 45, have never been married, reside in Muscat Governorate, and be marrying another Omani citizen. In addition, their monthly income must not exceed RO 600. Required documentation includes copies of the applicant's ID card, a certified marriage contract, and an employer-endorsed salary certificate. Applications can be submitted online or via email and are subject to a verification process. Once reviewed, eligible applicants will be notified by phone. The service is free of charge, and the review process typically takes up to 30 working days. The rollout in Muscat follows a directive by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to establish a national marriage support fund. Each of the Sultanate's 11 governorates has been allocated RO 1 million to implement the program, with full activation expected by the end of June. The initiative was a key agenda item in the year's first governors' meeting, chaired by Sayyid Hamoud bin Faisal al Busaidi, Minister of Interior. The meeting emphasized aligning local development priorities with the Sultan's vision of decentralization and strengthening community participation in governance. Further details regarding application procedures and eligibility in other governorates are expected to be announced soon by the Ministry of Interior.
