Charles Barkley, CBS crew pays tribute to Greg Gumbel, longtime March Madness host
Gumbel died in December at age 78, but his ever-present spirit was still felt on the set as CBS tipped off coverage of the tournament's first round on Thursday afternoon with the music of Gumbel's favorite band, the Rolling Stones.
"A void was left that could never be filled," current host Ernie Johnson said as the broadcast opened. "We wear his pin on our jackets and we carry his memory in our hearts."

A somber mood engulfed the set as the network's trio of analysts offered up their memories of working with Gumbel.
"It's sad and surreal that he's not in that chair," Clark Kellogg said. "Because he was so good at what he did and he was so good to the people he did it with and for, you, the viewers were who he sought to serve. In doing that with class, with competence with consistency, with gentleness and kindness, he lifted all of us."
Said Charles Barkley: "It is surreal. We had been texting back and forth, he said, 'I'll see you guys next year.' Then out of the blue you get a text that he had passed, and whoa, what just happened? …
"Nobody can do what he does as long as he did unless you're talented and people like you. The ability to do multiple sports, Ernie (Johnson) is great at that. Kevin Harlan, Sean McDonough is great at that. Bryan Anderson, Greg Gumbel … To go from sport to sport, that has got to be incredibly hard. And he did it with such grace for so long."
Kenny Smith said the week before Gumbel died, he texted a simple message that was never returned.
"We just assume these things are going to continue forever. ... He echoes through these hallways."
Smith summed things up as the broadcast turned toward the games at hand – a total of 16 of them on Thursday: "We're gonna miss him wholeheartedly. It's a difficult time, but we're gonna have fun."

Musburger hosted The NFL Today on CBS before becoming a big-event play-by-play voice for college football and basketball. He will always be known for his goosebump-inducing catchphrase, 'You are looking live.' In honor of Murburger's award, Michael Holley and I did a draft on Friday's PFT Live of iconic voices in sports. It's hard to argue with any of them, and it was a fun trip down memory lane. Most of our picks have won the award Musburger receives tonight. It was long overdue, but it's better late than never.

New Orleans Saints legends left off CBS Sports' NFL All-Quarter Century Offense
The New Orleans Saints have had some of the best players in football over the past 25 years, but did they do enough to get recognized on a larger scale? How are they viewed from a bird's eye view? CBS Sports' Bryan DeArdo recently built out the NFL's All-Quarter Century Offensive Team, and his group had zero Saints players on the actual team. Both Drew Brees and Jahri Evans were mentioned as 'honorable mentions,' but that's as far as New Orleans got. While it is very hard to be considered among the best of the best, both of those players had arguments to actually get included. Tom Brady was the starter at quarterback, with both Peyton Manning and Patrick Mahomes being listed as reserves. That left Brees with Aaron Rodgers and Ben Roethlisberger as the honorable mentions. During his 20-year career, completely contained within the 2000s, Brees is statistically in the top three. He had 80,358 yards with 571 touchdowns while completing 67.7% of his passes. He is second in yards, completions and touchdowns behind Brady. He even won a ring and arguably should have at least one MVP to his name. The quarterback conversation is always going to come down to who is making the argument, but Brees certainly earned the right to be near the top of that conversation each time. There is a pretty clear case for him to be above both Rodgers and Manning, with Brady and Mahomes being the easy choices for the first two spots. The starting offensive line included Joe Thomas, Alan Faneca, Jason Kelce, Zack Martin and Lane Johnson. That is a very solid group. Kevin Mawae, Jonathan Ogden, Steven Hutchinson, and Trent Williams were the reserves. Evans was the second honorable mention listed, behind Maurkice Pouncey. Like Brees, Evans has a pretty clear resume that would lead many to believe that he should be higher on the list. He was a four-team All-Pro and a one-time second-teamer. Hutchinson, the reserve guard, did have one more first-team All-Pro nod, but Evans was the anchor for a Super Bowl team. Both are fantastic, though, and it's impossible to make a wrong choice between the two. Former Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah signs with 49ers ahead of the 2025 preseason
A former Husker continues his journey through the NFL, joining his fifth team on Thursday. CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz announced that running back Ameer Abdulah is signing with the San Francisco 49ers. Abdullah joins the 49ers after working out with the team this week and spending the 2024 season with the Las Vegas Raiders. Last season, he rushed for 311 yards and two touchdowns while also hauling in 40 catches for 261 yards and three touchdowns. Abdullah played three seasons with the team, totaling 420 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and 84 catches for 603 yards and four touchdowns. A second-round pick by the Detroit Lions in the 2015 NFL Draft, Abdullah played in 141 career games, earning 26 starts with Detroit, the Minnesota Vikings, the Carolina Panthers, and the Raiders. He's tallied 1,994 yards and eight touchdowns in his career. Abdullah now joins the 49ers team roster in a versatile offense after working out with the team on Wednesday. He is now one of five running backs for the 49ers, which include Christian McCaffrey, Isaac Guerendo, Patrick Taylor, and fifth-round rookie Jordan James. At Nebraska, Abdullah rushed for 4,588 yards in his career, trailing only Mike Rozier's school record of 4,780. He did become the first Husker in school history to produce three straight 1,000-yard rushing seasons. He is also one of just 11 players in FBS history to surpass 7,000 career all-purpose yards. The 49ers begin the 2025 NFL Preseason next Saturday night against the Denver Broncos.
