Chicago Cubs aiming to secure 2027 All-Star Game for Wrigley Field

MLB has not yet scheduled an announcement around the club and city that will host the 2027 All-Star Game, according to a league source. Still, it appears the Cubs are gaining momentum in this pursuit.
From MLB's perspective, a primary issue has been the security concerns around staging a massive event in an old ballpark located in a densely packed neighborhood. The Cubs have long been working with City Hall to alleviate those concerns.
Bennett Lawson, the alderman of the 44th Ward that includes Wrigley Field, introduced an ordinance this week that would surround the stadium's perimeter with concrete bollards and widen the sidewalks along Addison Street. The $30 million cost of the proposed project would be split among the state, the city and the team, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Wrigley Field previously hosted the All-Star Game in 1947, 1962 and 1990.

Inter Miami rallies to beat Necaxa on penalty kicks in Leagues Cup after Messi exits with injury
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Luis Suárez had the game-winning penalty kick, and Inter Miami rallied to beat Necaxa in the Leagues Cup on Saturday night after losing Lionel Messi to a hamstring injury in the opening minutes. Jordi Alba had the tying goal on a header the made it 2-2 in the second minute of stoppage time to force the shootout. Inter Miami then converted all five of its penalty kicks, and goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo denied Tomás Badaloni in the third round of the shootout. Suárez hit the winning shot into the top left corner. Messi was injured around the eighth minute when he fell while being challenged by a pair of defenders near the penalty area. He walked slowly toward the Inter Miami bench before sitting down on the pitch. Trainers came out and worked on his right upper thigh area before he subbed out in the 11th. Miami played down a man the rest of regulation. Telasco Segovia put his side ahead 1-0 minute after Messi exited on a feed from Inter Miami newcomer Rodrigo De Paul, who had two assists in just his second match with the club. It was Segovia's second goal of the tournament. Badaloni tied it at 1 on a shot that he tapped past Ríos Novo to the bottom left corner in the 33rd. Ricardo Monreal put the Mexican club ahead on what looked to be the winning score in the 81st before veteran left back Alba snapped a header into the back of the net on De Paul's free kick. ___ AP soccer:

In a battle of aces, Zack Wheeler's command remained elusive in Phillies loss
PHILADELPHIA — It was the seventh inning, and Zack Wheeler sat at 97 pitches. The 98th, a sinker, did not quite find the target that catcher J.T. Realmuto set. Instead, the Tigers' Javier Báez put a swift swing on the pitch to send it into the left-field stands at Citizens Bank Park on Saturday. Wheeler grimaced. Báez rounded the bases, and the mound visit commenced. Wheeler made his way into the Phillies' dugout. After six innings pitched and three home runs allowed, his day was over. Advertisement 'Fastball command was off,' Wheeler said. 'I just pulled a lot of stuff. It was probably the worst my sinker's ever been — just pulling it middle. That's what Báez hit out at the end.' The Phillies' 7-5 loss to Detroit was the latest of four straight starts in which Wheeler has looked good, but not as sharp as usual. He can still battle, striking out 10. He drew whiffs that made batters look silly, like big swinging strikes on sweepers to end the first and fourth innings. And he is still tied atop the National League for FIP (.92) and ranks fifth in ERA (2.64). But the Phillies' ace has allowed three or more runs in just six of 22 starts this year, and three of those starts have come over the past month. Saturday was one of them. BAH GAWD THAT'S JAVEER BAZE'S MUSIC ‼️ — Detroit Tigers (@tigers) August 2, 2025 It came during a battle of aces. Wheeler faced off against American League Cy Young contender Tarik Skubal, making it all the more frustrating, Wheeler said, that he came up short. What could've been a no-hitter watch was not when both pitchers gave up hits in the first. Yet both pitchers still brought precision and poise, initially. Skubal had six strikeouts through two innings. Wheeler had four. Then came the third inning. Wheeler's one-out, first-pitch fastball to Colt Keith shot toward the middle of the zone and was taken for a home run to right field. Four pitches later, a high-middle fastball to Kerry Carpenter was also sent deep to right field. It was 2-0, Tigers. Wheeler now has seven home runs in his last five starts. In his 17 starts before then, he had 10. His pitch counts over his last four starts have also generally increased. In his last four outings (23 2/3 IP), he is averaging 17.5 pitches per inning. In the five before then (40 IP), he averaged 15.3 pitches per inning. Advertisement It is nothing crazy, but it is a reflection of what Wheeler feels is the problem: 'Consistency, command isn't the same,' he said. 'That's really been it.' It's shown up across several games. He yanked some pitches against the Yankees on July 27, hitting three batters, including two back-to-back, as he let up four runs in the second inning. He let up a leadoff home run off a dead-center fastball to the Red Sox's Jarren Duran on July 21. In Wheeler's last start before the All-Star break, another dead-center fastball became a two-run homer for the Padres' Jackson Merrill. He has also been tagged late in recent outings, like a Red Sox resurgence in the sixth on July 27 and another Merrill homer in the sixth against the Padres on July 12. It happened again Saturday, when he gave up the homer to Báez. Before returning to the mound in the seventh, Wheeler sat at 95 pitches. Manager Rob Thomson said he liked keeping Wheeler in to face the Tigers' two right-handed batters, with plans to pull him before facing Keith, a lefty who went 3-for-3 against Wheeler. Wheeler said it was at his urging. 'Told him that I really wanted to,' Wheeler said, 'and we just have that respect for each other, so he let me. But, at the end of the day, maybe I shouldn't have. But I really did feel good being able to go back out there.' Thomson sees command as the culprit of Wheeler's recent struggles, 'for the most part.' Last week in New York, the manager saw lower velocity and worse command than on Saturday: 'Maybe we're trending in the right direction,' he said. After his July 27 start, Wheeler said he was going to work with pitching coach Caleb Cotham and search for anything to clean up. He did not find anything. Sometimes, he said, these stretches happen during the season. 'I just need to be better,' Wheeler said. 'I need to get my command back.'

Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss playfully shoved each other as the budding friends strolled to the ring. Michael Cole noted that nobody has won more SummerSlam matches than Charlotte Flair. Charlotte and Alexa could not get on the same page as to who would start this match. As a result, they were both jumped by the Judgment Day. Flair battled back before being cutoff by a Judgment Day double-team, but Bliss came to the rescue and evened the odds. After rallying, Bliss was smothered by Raquel Rodriguez. Though they followed a hot opener, the women's Tag Team Title opener had very little problem getting MetLife Stadium involved. The crowd was on fire during Charlotte Flair's hot tag. Charlotte's babyface reclamation project continues to succeed. Bliss accidentally struck Charlotte Flair. Roxanne Perez and Raquel Rod Rodriguez sold being surprised before taking control. Roxanne hit the Pop Rocks on Flair and Bliss broke it up with an awesome snapmare. After a boot to Raquel, Bliss scored the winning pinfall to win the WWE Women's Tag Team Titles. As expected, Karrion Kross got another rousing reaction from the Pavlovian 'smart' fans in attendance. Fans did not boo Sami Zayn, however. Sami Zayn got off to a hot start, with a moonsault off the barricade. As Kross took advantage of the match, there were battling chants of 'let's go Sami/let's go Kross.' Sami had an ugly landing on the business end of a Saito. After the nearfall, Scarlett gave Kross a steel pipe. Kross' attempt with the pipe backfired as Scarlett distracted the ref. Zayn lost his mind and attacked Karrion Kross to the point where the referee had to physically restrain him. Scarlett gave Sami the steel pipe as New Jersey gasped. Zayn considered using the pipe on Kross in front of the referee before emphatically tossing it aside. Kross Rolled up Sami for a nearfall. Zayn won the match with a Helluva Kick. There were faint 'we want Kross' chants after the match as Michael Cole performed a live tribute to Hulk Hogan at SummerSlam. Jade Cargill, donned in Jamaican-inspired ring gear, received a nice pop, but Tiffany Stratton's pop was massive. Fans sang 'Tiffy Time' as Cargill posed. Stratton hit a basement dropkick on Jade followed by a dive to the outside. Stratton hit a Swanton Bomb, smearing Cargill's makeup on her back. This was a back-and-forth battle of big athletic moves and it surpassed the Kross-Zayn match by the time it got out of first gear. Cargill hit a Jaded on Stratton, but Stratton's foot was on the rope as Jade pinned her. Stratton countered a super Jaded and followed up with a PME for the win. Jelly Roll led New Jersey in singing the chorus of Randy Orton's theme song. Jelly Roll was introduced as 'a son of a sinner.' Jelly Roll started the match, standing his ground against Logan Paul with a series of shoulder tackles. Paul tagged in Drew McIntyre to intimidate McIntyre. McIntyre decided against tagging in Randy, but came up short in his brawl with McIntyre. Logan Paul hit an awesome Frog Splash through a table on Jelly Roll. He was carried out of the match by WWE officials as fans sang 'Jelly Roll!' Jelly assured his wife he was okay before dramatically reentering the match to a huge reaction. Jelly's late comeback ended with a chokeslam on Paul followed by a Black Roll Slam on McIntyre. Fans went crazy. Jelly caught a diving Logan Paul in midair and hit a Jelly-to-Belly slam. Orton hit an RKO on McIntyre. Paul discarded Orton and hit a Paul from Grace (Frog Splash) for the win. Great match. CM Punk wore Fantastic Four inspired gear just in time for the eight-day anniversary of First Steps. Punk and Gunther chain-wrestled early as fans chanted for CM Punk. Punk was the clear babyface in this match. After Punk was a step ahead of Gunther early, Gunther struggled to land his first chop. It was a massive strike that sent Punk crashing to the mat. Punk regained control with chain wrestling. Punk blocked another chop and maintained his offense with chops of his own. Once Gunther got his claws on Punk, he chopped every part of his body as the tides turned. Gunther trapped Punk in an abdominal stretch as fans rallied behind Punk. Gunther laid it on thick with the trash talk as he had Punk locked in a rear-naked choke. It was similar to Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229. After Punk battled back, Gunther countered a high-knee in the corner with a power bomb and it looked absolutely brutal. Gunther poured it on, but CM Punk once again took advantage of an overconfident Gunther. As Gunther was celebrating on the announce table, Punk pulled his legs from up under him, causing Gunther to bleed. Punk pounced on Gunther, hitting two GTS' for the win. Seth Rollins cashed in on CM Punk after shedding his crutches and beating up a worn-down CM Punk. Rollins pinned CM Punk for the win. His electrifying win was the perfect ending to SummerSlam.
