Kota Iskandar showdown brews as Amanah challenges Umno in Johor state polls

Malay Maila day ago
JOHOR BAHRU, July 22 — The Iskandar Puteri Umno division is prepared to take on Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) following the latter's intention to stake their claim on the Kota Iskandar state seat for the upcoming state election.
Iskandar Puteri Umno information chief Datuk Abdul Aziz Sapian said the division is geared to contest against Amanah, irrespective of whether it's a straight fight or multiple cornered contest in Kota Iskandar.
He said the Iskandar Puteri Umno division will not be intimidated by any political manoeuvring made by Amanah or their allies in Pakatan Harapan (PH).
'We are ready to face any form of challenge.
'If Amanah chooses to split votes among themselves, Umno sees this as evidence of PH's weakness in failing to manage internal issues.
'The people will judge who is sincerely looking after their interests and who is simply pursuing power,' he said in a statement today.
Abdul Aziz was responding to an earlier statement by Iskandar Puteri Amanah division that laid claim on both Kota Iskandar and Skudai for PH.
The former two-term Nusajaya assemblyman (prior to renaming to Kota Iskandar in 2018), said Umno respects the right of any political party to contest and determine their candidate in any seat. However, he explained that Umno determines its candidates and strategies based on the people's priorities, the strength of its grassroots and the need to ensure political stability for the continued development of Johor.
'For Umno, all negotiations and decisions on seat distribution are the prerogative of the party and coalition's highest leadership,' he said, adding that the final decision is not based on the wishes of Umno members at divisional levels.
Abdul Aziz said Umno remains committed to strengthening Johor's political stability, especially in the strategic area of Kota Iskandar where where continued development and public well-being are priorities.
'As the Barisan Nasional (BN) elected representative, represented by Umno, in Kota Iskandar, we will continue to serve until the term ends without being distracted by Amanah's political rhetoric.
'Rest assured that the Iskandar Puteri Umno division will continue to ensure that the area remains under a credible and stable leadership that serves the people, and not just a slogan,' he said.
Earlier, the Iskandar Puteri Amanah division declared it is prepared for PH to contest solo in Skudai and Kota Iskandar, setting up a possible clash with BN that is incumbent in the latter seat. Its division chief Dzulkefly Ahmad said PH's official decision to contest in both of the state constituencies under the Iskandar Puteri federal seat was the result of the party division's annual general meeting on Sunday.
Dzulkefly, who is also Johor Amanah deputy chairman, said the party is prepared for any outcome, including a three-cornered contest, if necessary, by bringing the people's agenda of unity, institutional reform and sustainable development.
Kota Iskandar is a highly coveted seat as it is also the location for Johor's administrative capital with the same name.
The state constituency was helmed by PH under Amanah after the watershed 2018 general elections. However, PH lost the seat to BN in the 2022 state election, where Umno maintains a strong presence.
Skudai has traditionally been under PH and is a known DAP stronghold since 2008.
Both state constituencies make up the Iskandar Puteri federal constituency.

Poland's Tusk unveils new cabinet in bid to reverse decline

Donald Tusk's coalition has steadily declined in opinion polls since mid-2024. (AP pic) WARSAW : Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced a cabinet reshuffle today in a bid to regain momentum amid falling approval ratings and potential clashes with the new, opposition-backed nationalist president. Since Karol Nawrocki's victory over Tusk's liberal ally Rafal Trzaskowski in June's presidential election, dissension within the ruling pro-European coalition has grown, raising doubt about its future under a veto-wielding head of state. Under the reshuffle, foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski was promoted to deputy prime minister while keeping his current post. 'We as a government need a very strong political figure in international relations,' Tusk told reporters. To consolidate oversight of economic affairs, Tusk announced a new super ministry combining finance and the economy to be headed by current finance minister Andrzej Domanski. 'The most important structural undertaking is building a viable financial and economic centre. There will be a single centre operating transparently and implementing a comprehensive economic policy,' Tusk said. Milosz Motyka from junior coalition party PSL will head a newly created energy ministry. A judge, Waldemar Zurek, was named to run the justice ministry as it seeks to shore up rule of law standards that critics say deteriorated under the previous nationalist government. Tusk's coalition has steadily declined in opinion polls since mid-2024. This month, the share of government opponents has risen to 48% while the government's support has held steady at 32%, the latest CBOS poll showed. Polls have traced the government's drop in popularity to public disenchantment with a lack of concrete achievements, with the opposition landing effective blows over a failure to stem undocumented migration into Poland. The reshuffle drew criticism from the main opposition Law and Justice party, which lost power in the 2023 election. 'Reconstruction means nothing other than the further destruction of Poland. Some incompetents were replaced by others,' the party's vice president, Mariusz Blaszczak, said in a post on X. Nawrocki, who will be sworn in as president on Aug 6, has questioned the coalition's pro-European, liberal agenda but said he is willing to accept moves to increase the tax-free pay threshold and deregulate parts of the economy. 'All laws that will be good for Poles will meet with my approval,' Nawrocki said in the televised interview on Monday. Tusk, in his remarks announcing the reshuffle, called on supporters not to despair after Nawrocki's presidential victory. 'No defeat, including the presidential election, justifies this mood or despair, this slackness, these thoughts of surrender… The time of post-election trauma definitely ends today,' the former European Council president said.

Focus on SMEs to boost women in workforce, says TalentCorp official

The government plans to increase the female labour force participation rate to 60% by the end of the year. KUALA LUMPUR : A greater focus should be placed on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as part of efforts to increase the number of women in the workforce, says a Talent Corporation Malaysia Bhd (TalentCorp) official. TalentCorp's chief strategy officer Nazrul Aziz said it was necessary to further incentivise SMEs so that they would offer flexible working and caregiving arrangements to female employees. 'We have no issue with multinational corporations (MNCs) and GLCs. But for every 10 Malaysians, only three work for MNCs and GLCs. 'If we want to make a shift in the (labour market's) ecosystem, we need to focus on SMEs,' he said at a panel discussion on the World Bank's inclusive employment practices report launched here today. Nazrul spoke in agreement with human resources minister Steven Sim, who earlier highlighted the low participation rate in women's career comeback programmes. The TalentCorp official said SME employers needed to be further incentivised to support these programmes. 'We're providing tax incentives to companies that implement flexible working arrangements. 'But now, we have to focus more on SMEs, because MNCs and GLCs are already pretty much there (in supporting women's career comeback programmes),' he said. He added that so far, about 3,000 companies have participated in TalentCorp's advocacy programmes promoting flexible working arrangements. Former Women's Aid Organisation deputy executive director Yu Ren Chung said it was important to amend the Employment Act to outlaw discrimination against women during the hiring process. 'There's actually no law that prohibits companies from choosing not to hire someone because they might, for example, start a family. 'The Employment Act, right now, mostly covers employees, but there's no legal reason why it can't also tackle discrimination towards job seekers,' he said. Previously, World Bank economists had spoken about Malaysia's struggle to retain women in the workforce. The government's target is to increase the female labour force participation rate to 60% by the end of the year.

Anwar trying to address public dissatisfaction ahead of rally, says opposition

Acting Muda president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz said her party will not stop members from attending Saturday's rally, while PAS information chief Fadhli Shaari said the RM100 cash payment will have no long-term impact. PETALING JAYA : Opposition members have criticised Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim over his announcement earlier today of the RM100 one-off cash aid for all Malaysians, calling it an attempt to address public dissatisfaction ahead of the anti-Anwar rally on Saturday. At a press conference at the Muda office today, acting party president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz said the announcement gave the impression that Anwar was worried about the upcoming rally. 'All these announcements are being made to placate the people, but it's not working,' she said. Amira said while her party was not part of the rally's organising body, it would not stop its members from attending it. She also criticised chief secretary to the government Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar for warning civil servants not to attend the rally, saying public assembly was the right of all Malaysians under the Federal Constitution. 'If they do join the rally on Saturday, and action is taken against them, Muda is fully prepared to offer legal assistance for those being investigated for participating in the rally,' she said. Separately, PAS information chief Fadhli Shaari accused Anwar of 'urgently' announcing the RM100 aid, instead of in the lead-up to Budget 2026, to 'dampen rising public anger'. 'Only the RM100 aid for all adult Malaysians (worth a total of RM2 billion) seemed appealing. Other than that, it was just a typical announcement that could have been made anytime,' he said in a Facebook post. Fadhli said the RM2 billion in cash aid 'means nothing compared with the RM7.5 billion saved from the targeted diesel subsidies'. 'There's no long-term impact. It was just a typical announcement. We march, no matter what! See you in Kuala Lumpur on July 26,' he said. In a special telecast this morning, Anwar said the cash aid was for all Malaysians aged 18 and above under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah aid initiative. He said the one-off payment, which would be channelled through the MyKad, was in conjunction with the National Day celebration and could be used between Aug 31 and Dec 31 to purchase basic necessities from over 4,100 outlets.
