Drama Festival spreads anti-drug awareness
The Inter-University Drama Festival, themed "Nashye Se Inkar, Zindagi Se Pyaar" (Say No to Drugs, Yes to Life), concluded on Friday.
Organised under the auspices of the Punjab Arts Council, nine university teams participated in the festival, which was part of a broader campaign against drug addiction. Islamabad Postgraduate College H-8 clinched the first position with its play Aas, Rawalpindi Women University secured second place with Un Dekha Jal, and Foundation University came third with Sarab.
In individual categories, Rida Rehman was awarded Best Writer, Yasin Ahmed Best Director, Ali Naqvi Best Male Actor, and Fiza Faisal Best Female Actor. Usman Ali and Aqsa were recognized as Best Supporting Actors, while Muqaddas Fiza received the Best Villain award.
The event was organised in collaboration with the Higher Education Commission, Anti-Narcotics Force, Shining Stars, and Saffron.
The prize distribution ceremony was attended by Parliamentary Secretary for Information and Culture Shazia Rizwan, Saffron CEO Zahid Mahmood, HEC Focal Person Rana Shafiq, former Arts Council directors Naheed Manzoor and Waqar Ahmed, and current Director Sajjad Hussain.
Renowned actors Anjum Habibi, Syed Basharat Jafri, and Amin Shahzad served as judges throughout the competition. Director Sajjad Hussain thanked participating institutions and guests for their support.
Parliamentary Secretary Shazia Rizwan lauded the Arts Council for using drama to spread awareness about addiction. "Parents must also play a proactive role in keeping youth away from drugs," she said.
Saffron CEO Zahid Mahmood highlighted the value of providing young artists a platform to promote social reform through performance.
The top three winning teams received cash prizes of Rs100,000, Rs75,000, and Rs50,000 respectively. Artist Rana Kashif served as the compère throughout the festival.

Photo: EXPRESS The Punjab Council of the Arts, Rawalpindi, hosted the grand closing ceremony of the Regional Drama Festival, aimed at reviving family theatre and offering high-quality entertainment to the public. A total of 13 drama teams participated, presenting plays on various social and cultural themes, showcasing their artistic talent in full form. Parliamentary Secretary for Auqaf and Religious Affairs, Government of Punjab, Malik Iftikhar Ahmed, was the chief guest. He distributed certificates of appreciation and shields to the participating artists, directors, and members of the Drama Scrutiny Committee. Speaking on the occasion, he praised the artists as a valuable national asset who promote Pakistani culture and bring pride to the nation through their talent. Prominent personalities who graced the closing ceremony included Founder of the Arts Council Naheed Manzoor, renowned poet Dr Afshan, former Arts Council Director Chaudhry Waqar Ahmed, PTV News Producer Malik Waqar, officers from the PNCA, along with noted artists, poets, and writers from Rawalpindi and Islamabad. In his address, Director of the Punjab Council of the Arts, Rawalpindi, Muhammad Shakoor, extended heartfelt thanks to all distinguished guests, drama teams, scrutiny committee members, and attendees.

Fights, politics rock Rawalpindi Arts Council
Once known for promoting family entertainment and cultural heritage, the Rawalpindi Arts Council has now become a battleground — both political and physical. According to sources, frequent quarrels involving physical assaults have become a routine occurrence, while the administration often disappears during such incidents and no legal action is taken against those involved. In just the past four days, two fights broke out involving foul language and physical violence. Despite the chaos, no complaints were filed with the police by the council's administration. Established in 1975 during the tenure of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the council was meant to promote entertainment, highlight Punjabi culture, and support local artists through drama festivals. Over the past 50 years, it staged historic plays and launched the careers of many artists. However, in the past two years, the council has turned into a political arena. More than half of the artists, directors, and singers have been barred from entering the premises. A female director's play was pulled from the drama festival schedule at the last minute. A former director was removed abruptly at midnight due to alleged political pressures, sources said. Protests and rallies have been held by artists against these restrictions. The political entanglements are so intense that even a senator and two MNAs from the PML-N have failed to resolve the issues. As a result, the number of family attendees has significantly declined. In some shows, only security personnel, administrative staff, and artists' families are present, the sources claimed. Earlier this week, a serious altercation broke out before a play, with young men exchanging blows and hurling abuse. Women and children fled the scene, some running upstairs to escape the chaos. The brawl lasted nearly 30 minutes despite efforts by others to intervene. Families have appealed to Punjab's Information Minister Uzma Bukhari to visit the council, listen to all artist groups, and lift the bans to restore normalcy. They warned that if immediate action is not taken, the Arts Council could cease to exist as a cultural hub and become a full-fledged battlefield.

‘Italian genius' Inzaghi to coach Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal
RIYADH: Former Inter boss Simone Inzaghi was revealed as the new coach of Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal on Thursday, days before they take part in the new-look Club World Cup. The Italian, who led Inter to a heavy defeat in Saturday's Champions League final, had earlier played down rumours of a two-year deal worth 50 million euros. 'I am Simone Inzaghi and today begins my story with Al Hilal,' he said in a slickly produced video posted on X, in which he sips Arabian coffee and pins an Al Hilal lapel badge on his suit. Inzaghi, 49, becomes just the latest high-profile footballing acquisition for oil-rich Saudi Arabia, which will host the World Cup in 2034. 'The Italian genius is here,' Al Hilal posted.
