Bank Nifty staged a modest rebound from intraday weakness, gaining 82.70 points or 0.15% to close at 56,949.20, driven by selective strength in financial counters. Top three stocks recommended by Ankush Bajaj for 8 July Buy: Motilal Oswal Financial Services — Current Price: ₹930.10 Also Read: India's share in global market cap up from recent low—but risks remain Buy: JK Lakshmi Cement — Current Price: ₹978.30 Also Read | For Nuvama Wealth, Jane Street impact is more about sentiment than financials Buy: 360 One WAM Ltd — Current Price: ₹1253 Market Wrap On Monday, the Nifty 50 closed flat, gaining just 0.30 points or 0.00% to settle at 25,461.30. Similarly, the BSE Sensex added just 9.61 points or 0.01% to end at 83,442.50. Bank Nifty staged a modest rebound from intraday weakness, gaining 82.70 points or 0.15% to close at 56,949.20, driven by selective strength in financial counters. While some pressure was visible in high-beta and interest-sensitive sectors — with the Metal index down 0.61%, PSE falling 0.28%, and PSU Bank slipping 0.16% — defensives firmly held ground. The FMCG sector led the charge with a robust gain of 1.68%, followed by the Consumption index up 0.43%, and Oil & Gas rising 0.41%, signaling a clear preference for stability in uncertain terrain. Among individual performers, Hindustan Unilever shone brightly, rallying 3.04% on strong institutional interest. Nestle India gained 1.22%, and Tata Consumer advanced 1.12%, reflecting sustained demand in quality consumption names. On the flip side, recent outperformers faced some pullback — Bharat Electronics Limited declined 2.44%, Tech Mahindra dropped 1.89%, and ONGC fell by 1.52%. Nifty Technical Analysis Daily & Hourly The Nifty ended Monday's session largely flat, forming a Doji candlestick on the daily chart, which reflects indecision among traders following the recent upward move. The index closed just above the 25,460 mark, maintaining its broader bullish structure but showing signs of short-term fatigue. On the technical front, Nifty continues to trade well above its key moving averages, with the 20-day simple moving average positioned at 25,182 and the 40-day exponential moving average at 24,940. This alignment confirms the medium-term uptrend remains intact. Momentum on the daily chart also supports this view, with the Relative Strength Index (RSI) holding firm at 61 and the MACD continuing to trend higher with a reading of 210 versus a signal line of 202. These indicators suggest that while the underlying strength persists, the pace of the rally is slowing. The intraday picture, however, reveals some caution. On the hourly chart, Nifty is hovering just above the 20-hour moving average at 25,443 and the 40-hour EMA at 25,440. Momentum indicators have turned soft at this timeframe, with the hourly MACD slipping into negative territory at –4 against a signal line of –8, while the RSI hovers near the neutral zone. These signals point toward weakening intraday strength and the potential for range-bound action or minor pullbacks in the near term. In the derivatives space, the overall option data suggests a mixed tone with a slight bullish bias in the short term. The total Call open interest stands at 13.86 crore, compared to 11.08 crore in Puts, resulting in a net difference of –2.79 crore, which indicates a bearish positioning trend. However, the intraday changes paint a different picture, with Put open interest rising by 1.73 crore and Calls by 1.52 crore. The net addition of 20.88 lakh contracts in favor of Puts reflects fresh Put writing and suggests support is building at lower levels. The Put/Call Ratio stands at 0.80, leaning toward a bearish tilt but still within a manageable range. From a strike-wise perspective, the highest Call OI remains at 26,000, reinforcing it as a key resistance zone, while the most active addition on the Call side was seen at 25,600. On the Put side, the strongest base continues at the 25,000 strike, followed by notable additions at 25,300, indicating a support band just below current levels. Volatility edged slightly higher, with India VIX rising by 2% to 12.56. Despite this uptick, the overall volatility environment remains subdued, suggesting traders are still comfortable and not aggressively seeking protection against downside risks. Market breadth was neutral to mildly positive, mirroring the consolidation seen in price action. In summary, the Nifty's medium-term trend remains upward, backed by strong moving average support and a constructive daily momentum setup. However, the formation of a Doji and softening intraday indicators highlight growing caution and the potential for consolidation between 25,200 and 26,000. Unless the index breaks above the 26,000 mark decisively, the market may continue to trade in a sideways range. Traders are advised to adopt a tactically cautious approach—considering long positions on dips toward 25,200–25,300 with stops below 25,150, while watching for a breakout above 26,000 to re-enter directional trades. Best stock recommendations today: MarketSmith India's top picks for 8 July
On Monday, Nifty50 traded in a narrow range and closed flat amid cautious investor sentiment. The subdued movement was driven by global uncertainty ahead of the US tariff decision, which weighed on risk appetite. While FMCG and Consumption stocks provided support, weakness in IT and Metal stocks capped gains. Low trading volumes and a declining volatility index, with the India VIX near 9-month lows, reflected a wait-and-watch approach ahead of the tariff decision and Q1 numbers. Two stock recommendations by MarketSmith India for 8 July: Buy: Godrej Consumer Products Limited (current price: ₹ 1268.40) Also Read: India's share in global market cap up from recent low—but risks remain Buy: Hindustan Unilever Ltd (current price: ₹2410.40) Also Read: Optimistic HUL targets 10% earnings growth over medium-to-long term Nifty 50: How the Benchmark Index Performed On Monday, Nifty50 traded within a narrow intraday range of 83 points, oscillating between 25,490–25,407, and ended the session on a flat note. The price action resulted in the formation of a narrow-range candle on the daily chart, reflecting indecision amid low volatility. On the sectoral front, FMCG and consumption stocks outperformed, led by gains in HUL, Godrej Consumer, and ITC. In contrast, most other key sectoral indices and broader market segments closed flat to negative, causing the market breadth to weaken, with the advance-decline ratio settling at 2:3. Technically, Nifty50 continues to maintain a structurally bullish setup, trading firmly above its key moving averages. The recent price action suggests a phase of short-term consolidation. The relative strength index (RSI) on the daily chart is hovering near 61, reflecting a neutral-to-positive bias without entering overbought territory. Simultaneously, the MACD remains in positive territory, with a bullish crossover intact and trending flat above the central line. According to O'Neil's methodology of market direction, Nifty reclaimed its recent high of 25,116. Hence, the market status has been upgraded to a Confirmed Uptrend as of 11 June 2024. Nifty50 witnessed a volatile trading session on Monday, reflecting investor caution ahead of key global macroeconomic events. Despite the intraday fluctuations, the broader market structure remains constructively bullish. The key support levels are situated around 25,200, followed by 25,000, which are likely to cushion any downside pressure. On the upside, resistance is observed near 25,600–25,700, and a decisive move beyond this range could pave the way for a renewed upward trajectory. Bank Nifty witnessed a volatile, roller-coaster trading session on Monday and ended with a marginal loss of 0.15%. After opening on a weak note, the index oscillated between positive and negative territory throughout the day. The price action resulted in the formation of a doji candle with a long upper shadow on the daily chart, signaling profit booking at higher levels and indecision near resistance zones. Mirroring this trend, Nifty Financial Services (FINNIFTY) also traded volatile and closed slightly lower, declining by 0.12%. Technically, Bank Nifty remains positioned above all its key moving averages across multiple timeframes, reaffirming the strength of its broader bullish structure. However, short-term momentum indicators point toward potential consolidation. The relative strength index (RSI) on the daily chart is trending downward and currently hovers around 57, indicating a loss of upward momentum. Additionally, the MACD has turned negative, accompanied by a bearish crossover, further supporting the possibility of a near-term pause or corrective phase within the ongoing uptrend. As per O'Neil's methodology of market direction, Bank Nifty remains in a "Confirmed Uptrend", a trend it has sustained over the past few weeks. Bank Nifty exhibited a choppy intraday session yet successfully held its previous day's low and closed flat. The broader structure remains bullish, with the index consolidating in a range of 56,500–57,500. A sustained move above 57,000 could propel it toward 58,500–59,000 in the upcoming sessions. Conversely, if 57,000 fails to hold, volatility may intensify, confining the index within 57,000–56,000. Archegos Employees Entitled to $33 Million, Judge Says
(Bloomberg) -- A federal judge ruled that a group of former Archegos Capital Management employees, including an analyst who worked closely with founder Bill Hwang, are owed $33 million for losses they suffered when the firm collapsed. The Wednesday order by US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein puts the 39 ex-Archegos staffers first in line for compensation from Hwang and the firm's former chief financial officer, Patrick Halligan, who were both convicted of fraud last year. That's significant because the pair owe former Archegos trading partners — banks including UBS Group AG, Morgan Stanley and Nomura Holdings — $9.4 billion. Hwang, who was once worth more than $30 billion, lost most of his fortune when Archegos, his family office, imploded in 2021. His lawyers last year estimated his remaining net worth at around $55 million. The ex-employees invested deferred compensation in Archegos, with some saying they felt coerced by Hwang into doing so. There had been some controversy over whether some employees deserved to recover their losses. In January, Andy Mills, former co-chief executive officer, abandoned efforts to recoup losses from the firm's collapse after prosecutors claimed he was a 'knowing participant' and not a victim of Hwang's fraud. Mills was not charged over his actions at Archegos. Prosecutors also said a senior analyst, David Park, was not a victim. Park worked with Hwang on a daily basis and 'had a front-row seat to Hwang's manipulative trading strategy,' according to the government. But Hellerstein found that Park was a victim, saying he agreed with Park's testimony that he didn't falsify information, played no role in dealing with the defrauded banks and was unaware of the illegal scheme. Hwang was sentenced to 18 years in prison for misleading banks into providing Archegos with trading capacity that steadily inflated the value of his highly concentrated portfolio until the bubble burst in March 2021. Archegos' collapse contributed to the demise of one of the biggest names in finance, Credit Suisse Group AG, and caused significant losses at Morgan Stanley, UBS, Nomura and others. Lawyers for Hwang didn't immediately respond to messages seeking comment on the ruling. A lawyer for Halligan, who was sentenced to eight years, declined to comment. Both are free on bail pending appeal. Hellerstein said Halligan's responsibility is capped at one-third of the total, citing Hwang's greater share of blame for the scheme. The case is US v. Hwang, 22-cr-00240, US District Court, Southern District of New York (Manhattan). (Corrects position of David Park.
