Cowboys pleased with Trevon Diggs' rehab this time after previous frustrations

NBC Sports30-04-2025
Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during a Week 3 practice in 2023. During the rehab process, he did not rehab at the team facility full time.
Diggs now is rehabbing the same knee after chondral bone graft surgery Jan. 23, which entails transplanting pieces of bone tissue into the joint to stimulate growth.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones publicly rebuked Diggs for his previous rehab, suggesting his missed time at the team facility could have made him 'more subject' to re-injuring the knee.
'He's working hard,' Jones said last week, via Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News. 'That's very important, because if he will be very good and diligent as to his rehab process, then he'll get back quicker, and he will arrive when he does get back, sounder than if he has not worked as hard. He's more subject to injury. He's learned that one time. My point is, I have a lot of hope that his actual rehab and experience from the time before is really helping him out, and I think it has.'
Diggs returned for the start of the 2024 season after missing 15 games in 2023. He played 11 games before his most recent knee injury.
His 2025 season is in question.
Diggs, who twice has made the Pro Bowl, had his $9 million base salary for 2025 become fully guaranteed in March. He has a salary cap hit of $12.5 million this season and next season is due a base salary of $14.5 million with an $18.4 million cap hit.

Watch: Patriots fans react to Stefon Diggs arriving at training camp

New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs ran on the field to a chorus of cheers on Wednesday, after being cleared to participate at training camp. The veteran four-time Pro Bowler suffered an ACL injury that ended his season prematurely last October with the Houston Texans. He has been working hard behind the scenes to return before the start of the season, and that hard work led to him being available on the first day of training camp. Before the injury, Diggs was coming off six straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons. He has been widely viewed as one of the most consistent and productive wide receivers in the league for years. Patriots fans are hopeful he can bring that same level of success during his run in New England. Diggs had a productive 2024 campaign leading up to the injury in a loaded Texans' offense, recording 47 catches for 496 yards and three touchdowns. A return to form for the star wideout would add tremendous value to the Patriots' offense. Combining his natural playmaking abilities with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels' play-calling could be special to watch. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

Taylor Decker, Alim McNeill, Malcolm Rodriguez headline injured Detroit Lions on PUP list

Six Detroit Lions players were placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list before the start of training camp, highlighted by a couple stars and a big name. Left tackle Taylor Decker, defensive tackle Alim McNeill and linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez will not take part in practice for the foreseeable future as they've been placed on the PUP list. McNeill and Rodriguez were expected to be on the PUP list as they continue their recovery from season-ending injuries suffered late last fall, while Decker comes as a bit of a surprise. The Lions did not list what injury Decker is currently out with. Cornerback Khalil Dorsey, offensive guard Miles Frazier and defensive lineman Mekhi Wingo were the other three players placed on the PUP list. Within a 17-day period last season, McNeill and Rodriguez both tore the anterior cruciate ligament in their right knees. Rodriguez went down in a Thanksgiving Day win over the Chicago Bears and McNeill suffered the same fate in a Dec. 15 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Each players isn't expected to return to action until later this year. Until they are activated, neither McNeill nor Rodriguez will count against the 53-man active roster limit. While the absence of Rodriguez and McNeill will hurt, the Lions are well-fortified at the positions they play after making a number of moves this offseason. At linebacker, Detroit re-signed Trevor Nowaske and added both Grant Stuard and Zach Cunningham. They also beefed up the interior of the defensive line, bringing back Levi Onwuzurike before signing Roy Lopez and drafting Tyleik Williams in the first round. The offensive line, however, continues to take hits. Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow surprisingly decided to retire during the offseason, a move that just became official, while his potential replacement, second-round pick Tate Rateledge out of Georgia, has yet to sign his contract. It's unclear at this time if Decker is expected to miss any regular season time with whatever injury he currently has. Christian Gonzalez's seven-word reaction to facing Stefon Diggs

New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez is excited about potential training camp matchups with four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs, and he said as much while meeting with media members earlier in the week. Diggs, who was recently cleared for training camp, was one of the Patriots' newest receiving weapons acquired in the offseason. He signed a three-year, $69 million deal with the team in free agency. Meanwhile, Gonzalez is a third-year cornerback coming off his first All-Pro season. He'll be looking to solidify himself as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL this year. 'I'm excited for that. It'll be fun," Gonzalez said on the training camp matchup with Diggs, via NBC Sports' Phil Perry. This is a classic case of iron sharpening iron with the upcoming training camp battles between Gonzalez and Diggs. Before going down with the ACL injury, Diggs was coming off six straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons. If he returns to form, it could turn into an incredible matchup against Gonzalez, who locked down some of the best receivers in the league last year. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.
