
Beyond flags and fireworks: unfinished task of economic independence
For while flags will fly and anthems will rise this August 14th, the sobering reality remains that true independence continues to elude us — not for want of patriotism or potential, but for lack of economic self-reliance, policy clarity, and structural reform.
Today, the average Pakistani citizen is burdened under the weight of rising costs, stunted wages, and dwindling opportunities. Our economy continues to rely heavily on external debt, concessional aid, and remittance-fuelled consumption.
The vision of an independent, self-sustaining Pakistan — one that was so passionately articulated by Quaid-e-Azam — remains hostage to our inability to transform political will into bold economic choices.
Nowhere is our economic entrapment more obvious than in our energy sector. Pakistan has among the highest electricity tariffs in the region — averaging around PKR 50 per unit for residential consumers as of mid-2025 — largely due to capacity payments, inefficiencies in transmission, and the perennial monster of circular debt, which has ballooned to nearly PKR 2.4 trillion.
In the petroleum sector too, a distorted pricing mechanism, excessive taxes, systemic leakages and reliance on expensive imported fuel have distorted both consumption and investment decisions. Our taxation regime is similarly punitive and misaligned. Over 60 percent of tax revenue is collected through indirect means, disproportionately impacting the lower and middle classes, while leaving large segments of the elite sectors under-taxed.
Agriculture, real estate, and wholesale and retail trade — which together contribute over 35 percent of GDP — continue to largely operate outside the documented economy. It is no surprise then that both local entrepreneurs and foreign investors remain wary of committing capital in a system so burdened by policy uncertainty and inequity.
Amidst this stagnation, however, ordinary Pakistanis — both households and businesses — are quietly taking matters into their own hands. Solar panel imports surged to over USD 1.4 billion in FY24 alone, a clear signal that grid defection is no longer a future risk but a present-day reality.
Entire housing societies are moving off-grid, factories are turning to hybrid solar-wind setups, and a quiet revolution in distributed energy is already underway. Yet policy continues to lag. We persist in funnelling scarce public resources into subsidizing a broken grid instead of embracing deregulation.
Our energy strategies remain locked in supply-side interventions — more power plants, messed up LNG — while the real opportunity lies in enabling open access, competitive retail supply, and genuine consumer choice. Without a massive deregulation drive, we risk ending up with stranded assets and an obsolete grid infrastructure, all while consumers increasingly opt out of the system altogether.
The establishment of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) has created a unique opportunity — perhaps the most credible institutional innovation in decades — to drive cross-sectoral economic reform through a whole-of-the-government approach. It has brought together civilian ministries, provincial governments, and the military in an unprecedented framework aimed at facilitating investment and cutting through bureaucratic red tape.
But institutions, no matter how robust, are only as effective as the political choices that back them. If there was ever a moment to take politically difficult yet economically necessary decisions — whether in power pricing, SOE divestiture, or tax reform — it is now. We must act while there is alignment at the top and a rare confluence of national interest and political pragmatism. As global supply chains diversify and capital seeks new destinations offering both stability and return, Pakistan cannot afford to hesitate.
Geopolitically, the tide may finally be turning in our favour. The evolving contours of US trade policy — particularly in a potential post-Trump tariff recalibration — present Pakistan with an opening to expand its exports. With India's trade relationship with the US occasionally strained, and Bangladesh approaching graduation from the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), Pakistan's textile sector in particular could gain significant ground if supported by a coherent government-to-government and B2B engagement strategy.
Pakistan's textile exports to the US crossed USD 5.1 billion in FY24 — a respectable figure, yet still far below our potential. For the fiscal year ending June 2025, exports to the US further rose to around USD 6.03 billion — a 10.7 percent year-on-year increase. If we harmonize the energies of private exporters and government facilitators — particularly by improving compliance with ESG standards, traceability, and labour practices — we could aspire to double this figure over the medium term.
Likewise, our IT and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sectors, growing at 15 percent annually, need strategic policy support to capture the expanding demand for nearshore digital services in North America.
The real challenge, as always, lies in execution. We know what needs to be done: broaden the tax base, deregulate energy, divest loss-making SOEs, digitize governance, and bet on competitive sectors. What we lack is not diagnosis but daring — the courage to prioritize long-term gain over short-term optics, to build national consensus beyond partisanship, and to tell the people the truth: that there is no prosperity without reform, no dignity without documentation, and no independence without economic resilience.
We cannot afford to waste another decade in denial. Pakistan's median age is 20.6 years. This generation is connected, conscious, and impatient. They will not be pacified with slogans. They want results — in employment, in energy bills, in upward mobility. If we fail to deliver, we risk a deeper crisis of confidence in the state and its institutions. But if we succeed — if we seize this moment, reform boldly, and act together — we can finally earn the economic independence we have been chasing since 1947.
We can become not just a nuclear power, but a functional economy. Not just a strategic location, but a strategic supplier. Not just a state with borders, but a state with purpose.
On this Independence Day, let us not merely commemorate our freedom — let us commit to completing it.

Beyond the equity cliff
In 2025, interest in venture capital (VC) in Pakistan reached a new high — at least online. Google Trends recorded a fresh peak in search activity. But investor capital did not follow. While global VC funding grew by 6 percent last year, Pakistan moved in the opposite direction. Total VC inflows fell by 70 percent to just USD 22.5 million. This followed an already weak 2023, when funding had barely crossed USD 76 million. By contrast, regional peers raised significantly more: India attracted USD 13.7 billion (up 43 percent year-on-year), while even Bangladesh, despite a pullback, secured USD 41 million. Most of the global VC rebound remained concentrated in the United States. According to Dealroom, US-based startups accounted for nearly 57 percent of total VC funding in 2024. That shift matters. With most of that capital retained within American borders, the US-backed wellspring of VC funding for Pakistani startups has run dry. Amid this capital drought, only a handful of funds appear to have the bandwidth to support promising ventures. Several investors have quietly withdrawn from deals — suggesting not just selective hesitation, but a deeper structural malaise. This is often overlooked by critics eager to dismiss 'startup culture' as a fleeting trend. Are investors reacting to persistent inflation and regional instability? Or have they simply found better risk-adjusted returns elsewhere? Since the pandemic, broader country risk has receded across much of South Asia. India has seen rating upgrades. Bangladesh has stabilized under an IMF programme. Even Sri Lanka has begun to rebuild investor trust following its exit from sovereign default. Pakistan remains the outlier. Despite a modest compression in its risk premium, investor confidence has yet to recover. Policy inconsistency, weak reform momentum, and macroeconomic fragility continue to weigh heavily on sentiment. Meanwhile, as local interest rates trend toward single digits, startups in other markets are increasingly opting for debt rather than equity. The challenge: Pakistan lacks dedicated venture debt or private credit funds. That absence stifles innovation—particularly in sectors such as agribusiness, where volatility and asset-light models deter conventional lending. With banks largely unwilling to lend without hard collateral, early-stage firms often resort to alternative structures such as revenue-based or royalty financing—models that tie repayments to topline revenue, allowing working capital support without equity dilution. Other regions are adapting. In the MENA region, alternative financing is becoming mainstream. According to Clear World's MENA Early-Stage Data Handbook, valuations, and deal sizes continue to rise, even as equity dilution in Series A rounds appears to be declining. A growing share of deals now includes credit facilities alongside equity. Pakistan has yet to make that leap. The result is a widening mismatch. While the broader private sector sits on idle capital, that liquidity is not flowing to high-risk, early-stage businesses. The startup economy finds itself squeezed between shrinking global VC and a domestic financial system that has not evolved to underwrite innovation. Founders cannot rely on traditional banks. Institutional investors capable of backing new ventures operate with limited capacity — and often, even more limited appetite — for risk. Pakistan's startup ecosystem cannot remain tethered to US-driven venture flows. If early-stage businesses are to endure economic turbulence and eventually scale, the domestic financial architecture must evolve. That means regulatory clarity, credit instruments suited to early-stage risk, and a funding environment that enables ambition without demanding immediate ownership. Absent these reforms, Pakistan risks losing the embedded value of its emerging sectors—either through attrition or through relocation to jurisdictions where non-dilutive capital is more accessible and less punitive. Youm-e-Istehsal: Punjab Assembly expresses solidarity with Kashmiris
LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly today unanimously passed a resolution expressing solidarity with the people of Kashmir on Youm-e-Istehsal-e-Kashmir, while also holding detailed discussions on flood-affected areas and the arrest of opposition assembly members. Provincial Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman, presented the resolution in the house, which received full support from all political parties. The resolution condemned India's illegal actions on August 5, 2019, when it unilaterally altered the constitutional status of Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The assembly rejected this aggressive move as a violation of international law and UN resolutions. It reaffirmed Pakistan's diplomatic and moral support for Kashmiris, emphasizing their right to self-determination as per UN resolutions. The resolution strongly denounced India's human rights violations in Kashmir, calling them a blatant breach of the Geneva Conventions. It also dismissed India's claims over Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, stating that the Kashmir dispute must be resolved strictly in line with UN resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. He warned that India's disregard for international law has severely jeopardized regional peace. 'The sacrifices of Kashmiris bear witness to their unbreakable resolve — they have not bowed before oppression, nor will they ever,' he declared. Expressing hope for Kashmir's liberation, the Speaker said, 'The day is not far when the sun of freedom will rise over the occupied valley.' Pakistan People's Party Parliamentary leader in Punjab Assembly Ali Haider Gillani raised concerns over the rising water levels in the Indus and Chenab rivers, which have submerged several villages, particularly in South Punjab, including Multan. He demanded immediate relief for affected communities and a detailed briefing in the assembly. In response, Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman stated that the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) was actively monitoring the situation and issuing alerts in high-risk areas. However, he acknowledged that many residents hesitate to evacuate due to concerns over livestock and belongings. He also informed the house that the Punjab Chief Minister had announced cash rewards for over 850 rescue workers during a cabinet meeting. Arshad also referenced India's illegal annexation of occupied Kashmir on August 5, 2019, during the tenure of the PTI government. He criticized the PTI administration for limiting its support to symbolic protests on Fridays, which, according to him, yielded no tangible results. He stressed that August 5 would forever be remembered as the darkest day in Kashmir's history. The PML-N leader further addressed India's aggression, recalling that when India launched attacks on Pakistan on May 5 and 6, a strong response was delivered on May 10 by Field Marshal General Syed Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who decisively struck the enemy on its own soil, securing victory for Pakistan.
