Tawau police arrests fleeing man after wife reports him for beatings, threats at home with axe and knife
TAWAU, June 29 — Police arrested a man for allegedly beating and threatening his wife with sharp weapons at a residence here on Saturday.
Tawau District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin said police had a received a report on the incident from the victim.
Jasmin said the incident was believed to have stemmed from a misunderstanding between the couple.
'The victim, who was worried about her safety, lodged a police report.
'She was also apparently threatened with an axe and a knife and received verbal threats from the suspect,' he said in a statement.
Acting on the report, a team of police officers tracked the suspect down near Kampung Haji Matahir.
He said the 44-year-old tried to escape when he noticed the police but was arrested after a brief struggle.
'The police also seized an axe and a knife suspected to have been used in the incident.
'The suspect and the seized items were taken to the Bombalai police station for further investigation,' he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code and Section 18A of the Domestic Violence Act 1994.
Jasmin advised the public not to use violence to resolve domestic issues or conflicts.
'They need to resolve the problem peacefully or refer to the relevant department to obtain appropriate advice and assistance,' he said. — The Borneo Post

Drunken dispute turns violent, man stabbed outside supermarket in Tawau
TAWAU: A dispute between two men believed to be under the influence of alcohol turned violent when one of them was stabbed outside a supermarket here yesterday afternoon. The incident took place at 3.43pm after an argument broke out between the two labourers, who are known to each other. Both were reportedly intoxicated at the time. The argument escalated into a physical confrontation, which ended with one man stabbing the other with a sharp object. District police chief Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin said the suspect, a 37-year-old foreigner, was arrested at 5pm at the scene. "Checks showed that he did not possess valid identification documents to be in Malaysia," he said in a statement. Police also seized the weapon believed to have been used in the attack. The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a weapon. The suspect is also being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for lacking valid travel documents and is being detained under Section 51(5)(b) of the same Act. Earlier, a video of the incident went viral on social media, showing the victim lying on the ground with serious injuries. Several bystanders were seen surrounding him at the scene. The victim was later rushed to hospital for treatment.

Cops to take charge of revamped scam response centre
Malaysians lost RM1.2 billion to various scams last year. In a case last month, a 53-year-old woman was swindled of nearly RM1 million by a love scam syndicate. PETALING JAYA : The police are to soon take charge of the National Scam Response Centre, which will be beefed up with its 997 hotline open around the clock, home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said. There had been 'certain operational shortcomings' under its current structure, he said, according to Bernama. The centre was set up in 2022 as a joint venture between the National Anti-Financial Crime Centre, the police, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, Bank Negara Malaysia, banks and telecommunications companies. 'Under the new structure, the police will directly receive scam reports, record the necessary details and notify the relevant banks immediately to freeze the victim's account. Efforts to recover stolen funds will follow promptly,' Saifuddin was quoted as saying. The police will now be supported by the other key agencies instead. He said the restructuring will also enable NSRC's 997 hotline to be operational 24 hours daily, with the centre to get more manpower to improve its response time. Saifuddin said the proposed improvements were approved by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and will be executed soon. Anwar had said on Thursday that the centre's role would be expanded to cover all forms of cybercrime. The centre was set up in 2022 to deal with the growing number of cyber fraud cases in Malaysia, including phishing scams, Macau scams, malware attack scams, parcel scams and love scams. Last year, Anwar said in a parliamentary reply that Malaysians suffered the loss of RM1.22 billion to online scams from January to October 2024. He said the figure includes losses from various fraudulent schemes, such as telecommunications fraud, e-commerce scams, non-existent loans, love scams and fake investments.
