Kaizer Chiefs: French-based Bafana star put on hold by Amakhosi

Bafana Bafana midfielder Lebogang Phiri has revealed that he held talks with Kaizer Chiefs before the pre-season break.
The 30-year-old midfielder is currently with French Ligue 2 side Guingamp, but says he would be open to a move back to South Africa.
Kaizer Chiefs already have several central midfielders on their roster, including Thabo Cele, who was signed from Europe in January. Although negotiations between Phiri and Kaizer Chiefs have slowed down, the Bafana star believes they can resume discussions and ultimately reach an agreement.
'Yes, Kaizer Chiefs did contact me and my representatives. We had small talks with Amakhosi, but I think since they were going to prepare for their pre-season in the Netherlands, the talks stalled a bit,' Phiri told Sunday World .
'But hopefully in the upcoming days or weeks, our talks will resume, and we will come up with something,' he added.
'Should something work out, I will be here, but if not, I will go elsewhere and keep pushing.'
Chiefs have already lost Yusuf Maart and Edson Castillo last month. In the midfield, they might need a bit of experience should Thabo Cele get injured. Phiri spent all his playing career in Europe and might not be an instant success if he decides to move to the PSL.
Another Bafana midfielder who Kaizer Chiefs looked at is Siphephelo Sithole. The move failed to materialise with Amakhosi having to settle for Siphesihle Ndlovu. It remains to be seen if the Glamour Boys can add more quality players before the Betway Premiership starts next month.

Kaizer Chiefs news: Legal drama, transfer vision aligned

Kaizer Chiefs' efforts to announce two promising new signings have encountered an unexpected legal obstacle, as Cape Town Spurs contest the release of Luke Baartman and Asanele Velebayi. While Chiefs' technical staff had already agreed personal terms with both players, Spurs maintain the duo remain under contract and have taken the dispute to court. Despite the setback, the Soweto giants remain cautiously optimistic about a favourable resolution. Beyond the courtroom tension, Amakhosi have quietly concluded six signings, signaling a deliberate phase of rebuilding. The club's renewed emphasis on youthful dynamism and pace reflects a strategic vision aimed at long-term success. Should Baartman and Velebayi join, they would bring the off-season haul to eight. Insiders suggest that, for the first time in recent memory, the board and technical team appear aligned, sending a clear message: Kaizer Chiefs are preparing to make a statement this season. As the transfer window continues to tick down, the club faces the delicate task of balancing ambition with pragmatism. With the stakes high and competition fierce, every decision now carries added weight, a reminder that the coming season will test not only the players on the pitch but the vision and unity behind the scenes. Nabi tells Kaizer Chiefs faithful: ‘We're not done yet'

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has indicated that there may be more signings to come soon. Amakhosi welcomed new arrivals early this month, ahead of their pre-season tour to the Netherlands. In the five matches they played, the Soweto giants won just once, but Nabi is in no rush to add more to his squad. On Saturday, Kaizer Chiefs play Asante Kotoko in Durba, where fans will get a chance to see the new signings for the first time at home. Nabi had admitted that there are a few positions to fill, but will look for the perfect time to bring in new players. 'There's one or two positions that we might strengthen, but we are going to look for the best opportunity in terms of quality,' the Kaizer Chiefs coach told the media ahead of the Toyota Cup clash. 'We don't want to fill the position just to fill it. We will wait as long as it takes to fill one or two positions for the next season. In addition, we have to give the opportunity this season to the young players who came from the DDC as well as the ones that were promoted last season because we feel that there's a big potential. 'But we want to do it step by step because we have learnt from a player like [Mduduzi] Shabalala. He was given a lot of responsibility and he carried a team on his shoulders last season especially the first part of the league. 'After that, at the end of the season, he kind of not collapsed but his performances were not good as expected. That's why we want to give them responsibilities but at the same time without burning them. We want to do it step by step,' Nabi said. Kaizer Chiefs brought in a few DDC players during their pre-season tour and one who stood out was striker Naledi Hlongwane.
