Kaizer Chiefs: French-based Bafana star put on hold by Amakhosi

Bafana Bafana midfielder Lebogang Phiri has revealed that he held talks with Kaizer Chiefs before the pre-season break.
The 30-year-old midfielder is currently with French Ligue 2 side Guingamp, but says he would be open to a move back to South Africa.
Kaizer Chiefs already have several central midfielders on their roster, including Thabo Cele, who was signed from Europe in January. Although negotiations between Phiri and Kaizer Chiefs have slowed down, the Bafana star believes they can resume discussions and ultimately reach an agreement.
'Yes, Kaizer Chiefs did contact me and my representatives. We had small talks with Amakhosi, but I think since they were going to prepare for their pre-season in the Netherlands, the talks stalled a bit,' Phiri told Sunday World .
'But hopefully in the upcoming days or weeks, our talks will resume, and we will come up with something,' he added.
'Should something work out, I will be here, but if not, I will go elsewhere and keep pushing.'
Chiefs have already lost Yusuf Maart and Edson Castillo last month. In the midfield, they might need a bit of experience should Thabo Cele get injured. Phiri spent all his playing career in Europe and might not be an instant success if he decides to move to the PSL.
Another Bafana midfielder who Kaizer Chiefs looked at is Siphephelo Sithole. The move failed to materialise with Amakhosi having to settle for Siphesihle Ndlovu. It remains to be seen if the Glamour Boys can add more quality players before the Betway Premiership starts next month.

Kaizer Chiefs news: Velebayi, Nabi, Djoumekou

Kaizer Chiefs have already completed six signings in what has been a deliberate and strategic off-season. Yet their efforts to bring in Cape Town Spurs duo Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman have stalled, as legal uncertainty clouds the potential transfers. Chiefs maintain that both players are no longer contractually bound to Spurs following the club's relegation from the Premier Soccer League, while the Cape Town outfit insists the agreements remain valid. While the club's legal team navigates the dispute, head coach Nasreddine Nabi continues to focus on shaping his squad for the campaign ahead. The Tunisian, tasked with restoring consistency and competitiveness to the Soweto giants, is pressing on with pre-season preparations. With six new arrivals already in the fold, Chiefs are steadily building a group they believe can compete for domestic honours. In parallel, the club has reportedly been offered the services of Cameroonian striker Ravel Djoumekou, currently playing for FC Saint Eloi Lupopo in the Congolese top flight. The offer has prompted interest within the technical team. 'He is a proven forward who could provide depth and experience,' a source familiar with the discussions said. 'He has been presented as an option, and it will now depend on Chiefs' analysts and scouts to assess whether he meets the technical requirements. Should they choose to proceed, he would be available.' Another source echoed the sentiment, suggesting that Kaizer Chiefs are not done with their transfer dealings. 'The process is ongoing. Some targets are known to the public, others are not. If this particular striker fits the profile, he will certainly be considered. The club remains active as the window stays open.' Sekhukhune United embarks on major growth journey with land acquisition in Midrand

Sekhukhune United Football Club is charting an exciting new chapter in its development, with major investments aimed at elevating its status and competitiveness in South African football. During a strategic partnership unveiling on July 14 at the Southern Sun Rosebank, club chairperson Simon Malatji revealed that Babina Noko has acquired 8ha of land in Midrand. The project, with a projected investment of R30m, is aimed at achieving a level of competitiveness comparable to that of Kaizer Chiefs Village in Naturena, Johannesburg. Also read: Total Football Excellence coach has high hopes for Hollywoodbets Regional League Malatji emphasised the significance of this development, stating: 'The land has existing structures, which are quite huge and are undergoing renovations. In that regard, we are utilising that one, to reduce costs and renovate the building. The estimate suggests, to be competitive like Chiefs, will be around R30m.' As part of its ambitious vision for the upcoming 2025/26 Betway Premiership season, the club also revealed another major development. Last season, Babina Noko showcased gear from Kelme, and the partnership announcement confirmed a three-year sponsorship deal with the leading sports apparel brand. This agreement, presented by Malatji in the presence of a Chinese delegation, including Kelme's chairperson Ke Yongxiang, officially designates Kelme as the club's partner for the next three seasons. The Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture Limpopo MEC, Jerry Maseko, was also present at the ceremony. 'This collaboration promises to enhance sport excellence, promote economic growth, and foster social cohesion.' FIVE talented Kaizer Chiefs leaving the club?

A quintet of youngsters could leave Kaizer Chiefs soon of their fortunes don't turn around sooner rather than later. Manqoba Ozoemena is wanted at AmaZulu. Meanwhile, Mdu Shabalala has plenty to prove. Let the 'Mayele to Kaizer Chiefs' nonsense be a lesson to us all According to local reports, Usuthu want to test Chiefs' resolve to keep talented playmaker Manqoba Ozoemena. 'It's believed that the AmaZulu FC technical team has proposed to management about Manqoba (Ozoemena). Coach Arthur (Zwane) knows him very well, and he believes that the player can help the team this season as they compete in the MTN8 and the other tournaments as well,' said a source familiar with the negotiations. Click for the story At the start of 2024-2025, Mdu Shabalala was a critical component in the Chiefs side, operating from the number 10 role. His output was healthy, too. However, that dwindled dramatically. After 27 league appearances, he scored four goals and claimed a solitary assist. He was limited to a substitute's cameo in Chiefs' Nedbank Cup win over Orlando Pirates. Only a bold man would predict that Mduduzi Shabalala will leave Chiefs in the winter, but his long-term prospects don't look great. The writing isn't on the wall yet, however, and it's up to the player to prove how much he wants to become a legend at the club. 'Chiefs will still finish ninth with their new signings' Chiefs star swaps 95,000 fans for 7,500-seater stadium Mdu or Die in action. Image: @kaizerchiefs / X 14-year-old Reatlegile Mosimane has earned himself a trial at AS Roma. Known for being Pitso's son, the young attacker plundered 38 goals last season. That earned him the top scorer award, as Chiefs won the Gauteng Development League U13 title. He hopes to follow in the footsteps of little-known Ikenna Tladi, the nine-year-old left-footed winger from Wolmaransstad who has signed terms with the Italian side. Click for the story Mfundo 'Obrigado' Vilakazi is still only 19, so time is on his side, but a player of his talent needs to start more games, more often. If Gaston Sirino is slowly phased out of the side, then Vilakazi's route to the first team could be clearer. Meanwhile, stylish 23-year-old holding midfielder Samkelo Zwane might need to look elsewhere for opportunities. Thabo Cele and Sibongiseni Mthethwa are the likely starting pair in midfield, but Siphesihle Ndlovu's arrival and rumours of a move for Lebogang Phiri will have Zwane sweating.
