Swiss city changes traffic lights from men to women's soccer players for 2025 Euros

USA Today20 hours ago
We may be only one match into the 2025 UEFA Women's Euro tournament, but Europeans are already celebrating their soccer stars.
In Basel, Switzerland, the city has decided to support th athletes by swapping the traffic lights. Instead of the classic red and green men, the green man has been swapped with a woman kicking a soccer ball.
These changes mark the beginning of a month-long celebration of the tournament. After all, Basel's Parc Saint-Jacques will be one of the main host arenas for the Euros, hosting five matches throughout the tournament, including the final, scheduled for July 27 at 12 p.m. ET. It will also host the official opening match of the tournament – the July 2 tilt between Switzerland and Norway.
Has Switzerland hosted the tournament before?
This year marks the first time Switzerland has hosted an international women's tournament. In fact, it was a major area of concern that Switzerland might not be able to manage the crowds this event might draw. Parc Saint-Jacques has a capacity of less than 40,000, after all. For comparison, Wembley Stadium, host of the finals for the 2022 Euro,s could hold 90,000 people.
According to the New York Times, Switzerland was even asked to remove their bid at one point, being told "England was such a success, we cannot go to a small country now."
According to the report, a large part of Switzerland's pitch to host the tournament allegedly came from a local rapper who performed a two-to-three minute rap to the UEFA committee around a cardboard cutout of Swiss tennis star Roger Federer, which had fallen to the floor early during the performance.
Somehow that was enough to change the committee's minds, granting Switzerland the opportunity to host the tournament.
Has Switzerland ever won the tournament?
No. In fact, they've never advanced past the group stage. Despite the tournament existing since 1984, they've only participated twice (2017 and 2022).
Switzerland holds a 1-2-3 record across their two tournament appearances, with their lone win coming against Iceland in 2017.
Who is in Switzerland's group for 2025?
Switzerland is part of Group A in the 2025 UEFA Women's Euro tournament, playing alongside Norway, Iceland, and Finland. The Swiss started play against Norway on July 2, then will meet Iceland on Sunday, July 6 at 3 p.m. ET, and Finland on Thursday, July 10 at 3 p.m. ET, to determine group stage standings.

Djokovic sets another record at Wimbledon and jokes about sipping margaritas on beach with rivals

Updated [hour]:[minute] [AMPM] [timezone], [monthFull] [day], [year] LONDON (AP) — Novak Djokovic added another record to his name by reaching Wimbledon's third round for a 19th time with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 win over Dan Evans on Centre Court on Wednesday. It was Djokovic's 99th match win at Wimbledon overall, and the 19 third-round appearances put him one ahead of Roger Federer for most by any man in the Open Era. It's hardly the most prestigious record for Djokovic, whose 24 Grand Slam titles — including seven at Wimbledon — are the most by a male player. But he could at least use it to poke fun at his new, and much younger, main rivals. 'Nineteen times, that's a great stat,' said the 38-year-old Djokovic. 'That's probably almost as much as Sinner and Alcaraz have years in their lives.' Well, not quite. Carlos Alcaraz, who beat Djokovic in the last two Wimbledon finals, is 22, while No. 1-ranked Jannik Sinner — who was playing later on Centre Court — is 23. The growing rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz — especially in the wake of their five-set final at the French Open last month — has helped tennis move on from the era of the Big Three, where Djokovic is the last man standing after Federer and Rafael Nadal retired. But Djokovic is too focused on proving he can still win another Slam to sit back and reflect on everything he has accomplished at Wimbledon. 'I don't pause to reflect, to be honest. I don't have time,' Djokovic said in an on-court interview. 'I would like to. But I think that's going to come probably when I set the racket aside and then sip margarita on the beach with Federer and Nadal and just reflect on our rivalry and everything.' Against Evans, Djokovic failed to convert his first nine break points in the first set. But once he got the breakthrough for a 5-3 lead — raising both arms in the air as if to say 'finally' — he went five-for-six on break points the rest of the way. 'You have these kinds of days where everything goes your way,' said Djokovic, who didn't face a break point of his own until the final game. 'Everything flows.' What else happened Thursday at Wimbledon? No. 7-seeded Mirra Andreeva and No. 10 Emma Navarro both advanced in straight sets. The 18-year-old Andreeva earned a 6-1, 7-6 (4) win over Lucia Bronzetti of Italy, and Navarro cruised past Veronika Kudermetova 6-1, 6-2. No. 11 Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, beat Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-1. In the men's draw, No. 11 Alex de Minaur ousted 115th-ranked Arthur Cazaux 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 and 19th-seeded Gregor Dimitrov outlasted Corentin Moutet 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. Who plays Friday at the All England Club? Alcaraz, the two-time defending champion, faces 35-year-old Jan-Lennard Struff on Centre Court, before No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka faces British home favorite Emma Raducanu in the late match. Australian Open champion Madison Keys faces Laura Siegemund on No. 2 Court. ___ AP tennis:
