Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz placed on paid leave due to MLB investigation

Luis Ortiz was supposed to start Thursday's game against the Cubs. (Photo by Frank Jansky/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz was placed on leave Thursday amid an MLB investigation, the team announced. The team did not provide details on the investigation, saying it was "not permitted to comment further at this time." Ortiz, 26, will go on paid leave through the All-Star break, per Zack Meisel of The Athletic. Advertisement The news comes just hours before Ortiz was expected to take the mound against the Chicago Cubs. With Ortiz on leave, the Guardians will turn to Joey Cantillo to start Thursday's game. After a promising season in 2024, in which Ortiz posted a 3.32 ERA over 37 appearances with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he was traded to the Guardians in December. He opened the season in Cleveland's rotation, and has a 4.36 ERA over 88 2/3 innings. In 16 starts, Ortiz has a 4-9 record. His nine losses lead the American League. The news comes in the midst of a disappointing season for the Guardians. Despite entering the year with playoff aspirations, the team has a 40-44 record, and sits in third place in the American League Central. Phillies Predicted to Trade Nick Castellanos in Deadline Blockbuster

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies are in a tight race with the New York Mets for the National League East lead. Their outfield has not produced offensively this year. Nick Castellanos has been the most consistent outfielder on the team. Brandon Marsh, Johan Rojas and Max Kepler have not produced at the plate. Castellanos has a .282/.325/.451 OPS and has started all but one game, when he was benched for a comment made after being pulled from the previous game. He will be a free agent after next season. The Athletic's Jim Bowden conducted a poll of over 40 MLB executives, and they predicted Castellanos could be one of the players traded at this year's deadline. PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - OCTOBER 12: Nick Castellanos #8 of the Philadelphia Phillies reacts after hitting a home run in the sixth inning against the Atlanta Braves during Game Four of the Division Series at Citizens Bank Park on October 12, 2023 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. More"The Castellanos rumors just never go away, and for that reason alone, multiple GMs think there's a chance he could get moved if Philadelphia can find a better right-field option," wrote Bowden. "Castellanos, 33, is hitting .282 with 10 home runs and a 111 OPS+. He's a well-below-average outfielder and is signed through 2026 at $20 million per year, so Philadelphia would have to pay down his contract to move him." Trading Castellanos while facing outfield production problems as-is would be a shocking move. However, if the Phillies can find a more productive option on the market, they may be able to package Castellanos in a deal to land an upgrade. Marsh, Rojas and Kepler do not have much trade value. Castellanos has hit 75 home runs in four seasons with the Phillies. He is a two-time All-Star and a Silver Slugger Award winner. Teenager Andreeva progresses in straight sets

Andreeva burst onto the scene as a 15-year-old at the 2023 Madrid Open [Getty Images] Teenage seventh-seed Mirra Andreeva reached the third round at Wimbledon with a mature straight-sets win against Italy's Lucia Bronzetti. Russia's Andreeva found the answers to the world number 63 as she secured a 6-1 7-6 (7-4) victory on Court One. Advertisement The 18-year-old is one of five top-10 seeds remaining in the women's draw after the opening three days brought shock exits for four of the top five including Coco Gauff and last year's runner-up Jasmine Paolini. Meanwhile, American 10th seed Emma Navarro cruised past world number 46 Veronika Kudermetova of Russia with a 6-1 6-2 win on court three. Having watched fellow seeded players tumble out, Navarro said, "it is kind of anyone's tournament" and will hope she can include herself in that conversation. But Navarro could face a tough challenge against defending champion Barbora Krejcikova, who plays American Caroline Dolehide later on Thursday, in round three. Advertisement Andreeva has long been tipped as one of the hottest emerging talents on the WTA Tour and she has underlined that this year with titles in Dubai and at Indian Wells. That made her the youngest champion in WTA history at the 1,000 level - the highest tier or tennis below the Grand Slam events. Grass is not her favoured surface with her best result at SW19 a run to the fourth round two years ago. But her front-footed style and clever net play in the first set allowed her to swiftly secure a double break then wrap up the opener just 24 minutes after setting foot on court. A tough second set followed with Bronzetti tidying up her errors and breaking in the fifth game. Advertisement Andreeva showed maturity to bide her time and break back as Bronzetti tried to serve out the set before she scrambled back from 15-40 to save set points and level at 5-5. But, after missing break points, Andreeva took the match to a tie-break where her range of shots in some lengthy rallies put her in control and she sealed victory with a clever volley at the net on her second match point.
