Last Surviving Cast Member of 'Hogan's Heroes' Passes Away at 89

Last Surviving Cast Member of 'Hogan's Heroes' Passes Away at 89 originally appeared on Parade. Kenneth Washington, best known for his starring role on CBS's classic sitcom Hogan's Heroes, passed away on July 18. At the time of his death, the late actor was 89-years-old. Born on October 19, 1935, Washington first entered the entertainment industry in the mid 1950s. Though he occasionally ventured into film with movies like the Jerry Lewis comedy Hook, Line & Sinker or 1973's Westworld, the actor would become more readily known for his roles on television, including guest appearances in Star Trek, Petticoat Junction and I Dream of Jeannie. After making his television debut on the family drama Daktari, Washington went to make eight appearances as police officer Miller in the NBC police drama, Adam-12. Following this, he was cast in a lead role in CBS's Hogan's Heroes, a fan-favorite sitcom following a group of WW2 Allied POWs in an Axis prison camp. In the context of the show, Washington portrayed the character of Sergeant Richard Baker. Succeeding Staff Sergeant James "Kinch" Kinchloe's place after actor Ivan Dixon left the series following its fifth season, Baker acted as the main underground radio operator of the camp and Colonel Robert Hogan's (Bob Crane) de facto second in command. Sadly, Washington's role in the series would last for only a single year, with CBS electing to cancel Hogan's Heroes after its sixth season aired on the network. Following his time on the series, Washington continued to work in television for the remaining two decades, guest starring in episodes of Police Story, The Rockford Files and A Different World before his retirement in 1989. On July 18, he was found to have passed away at his home in Beverly Hills, California. Washington is survived by his wife Alice Marshall; his siblings Johnnie and Aaliyah Akbar; his three children (Kim Lee, Kenneth Jr. and Quianna Stokes-Washington); his three grandchildren; and his four great-grandchildren. Love all! Venus Williams serves up victory on court and romance with fiancé Andrea Preti

The older of the Williams sisters made a triumphant return to tennis after a 16-month break, driven by the encouragement and support of her long-rumoured fiancé, actor Andrea Preti. Venus had an extended hiatus during which she underwent a medical procedure last July to remove fibroids from her uterus. Venus made a strong showing at the DC Open in Washington this week. The 45-year-old tennis star won her doubles match on Monday, then defeated 23-year-old Peyton Stearns 6-3, 6-4 in singles on Tuesday. Throughout both matches, she showcased her signature powerfulserves and groundstrokes. The seven-time Grand Slam champion and Olympic gold medallist had secured four Grand Slam titles before Peyton was even born. But this time it's not just her tennis victories making headlines. Venus is also winning at the game of love, as she's confirmed the long-standing rumours about her engagement to actor Andrea (37). 'My fiancé is here, and he really encouraged me to keep playing. He's never seen me play,' Venus casually revealed. Venus is now the second-oldest woman to win a tour-level singles match, after Martina Navratilova, who achieved this feat at age 47 in 2004. She told the Tennis Channel that her focus was to play well and win the match. 'You can still play a good match and lose the match. It's just about putting it all together. It's so rewarding to come back after a layoff and injuries.' With her Danish-born fiancé in the audience, Venus was aware that not only were the eyes of the tennis world on her but also the loving gaze of Andrea, who moved to Italy with his family as a teenager. As one-half of the most famous sibling duos in sporting history, alongside her sister Serena, Venus has spent much of her life in the spotlight but has kept her romantic life private. She dated model Elio Pis in 2012 and Nicholas Hammond in 2017 before finding her perfect match in Andrea. The couple were first linked in July last year when they were spotted boating together in Nerano, Italy, along the Amalfi Coast. Since then, they have kept their relationship private, though they were seen together again in January 2025. That same month Venus shared a selfie on her Instagram of them on holiday in the Bahamas, calling her now-fiancé 'the best company'. Engagement rumours followed, sparked by photos of the tennis legend wearing a diamond ring in Rome. Weeks later she was seen wearing the same ring at Milan Fashion Week. The man who captured Venus' heart has spent much of his career as a model but has also made a name for himself as an actor and producer. According to his IMDb biography, Andrea studied acting at the Susan Batson Academy in New York City, after which he landed roles in TV, film and commercials. He wrote, acted in and directed 2015's Italian movie, One More Day, and has appeared in the Italian TV series A Professor. More recently he starred in the 2023 Italian film Temptation and participated in the Italian reality series La Talpa. Grand Slam winner Rennae Stubbs asked Venus in the post-match interview how Andrea has supported her comeback journey. Venus glowingly admitted there were many moments when she simply wanted to relax, but her soon-to-be husband 'encouraged me to get through this'. She is set to face Magdalena Frech in the second round on Thursday, 24 July, and with the announcement of her engagement, one can expect wedding preparations to be on the horizon soon after.

Late Night Comedians Revel in the Latest Trump-Epstein Development

Welcome to Best of Late Night, a rundown of the previous night's highlights that lets you sleep — and lets us get paid to watch comedy. Here are the 50 best movies on Netflix right now. Quelle Surprise On Wednesday, it was reported that President Donald Trump had been informed back in May about his name appearing multiple times in the Jeffrey Epstein files. 'But he said he hardly knew the guy!' Stephen Colbert said, feigning surprise. 'You know how they say, 'There's no such thing as bad publicity'? They're not talkin' about this.' — STEPHEN COLBERT 'You're best friends with a pedophile for 10 years one time, and the world never forgets it.' — JOSH JOHNSON 'This new reporting is on top of what we learned last night, when CNN's The KFile released new, never-before-published photos of Trump and Epstein. Good job, I guess, but do we really need more evidence that these guys were best buds? [imitating reporter] 'This just in from CNN: Shocker! Frog and Toad are friends.' — STEPHEN COLBERT '[imitating Trump] I mean, I can't believe — I was only friends with him for, what, 15 years?' — SETH MEYERS 'But, yeah, this whole time, Trump already knew he was in the Epstein files, which is a good reminder that if someone's acting guilty, they're probably guilty. No one's ever like, 'Don't look at my browser history — you'll see all the charities I volunteer for!'' — JOSH JOHNSON The Punchiest Punchlines (The Happy Couple Edition) 'Well, guys, the big story continues to be President Trump's handling of the Epstein files, and now newly uncovered footage shows that Jeffrey Epstein attended Trump's second wedding in 1993. Yeah, it was nice — you had the bride, the groom, the groomer.' — JIMMY FALLON 'And this was odd. At the end of his vows, Trump turned to Epstein and said, ''Till suspicious death do us part.'' — JIMMY FALLON 'O.J. Simpson was also at Trump's wedding. Jeffrey Epstein and O.J. Simpson. Trump's ex-wife was like, 'OK, so in hindsight, maybe there have been a couple red flags there.' Apparently, Jeffrey Dahmer couldn't make it because he had a bar mitzvah that day.' — JIMMY FALLON 'But Rosie O'Donnell was also at the wedding. Honestly, I feel like Trump is more upset that that got out.' — JIMMY FALLON Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
