Removing IEDs top priority of security forces in Saranda: IG

Time of India2 days ago
Ranchi: Improvised explosive devices (IED) have emerged as the biggest challenge to security forces involved in anti-Maoist operations in the forest areas of Saranda and other parts of West Singhbhum.
With the toll and injuries caused by IED blasts rising, police have launched special operations to detect and seize the devices.
Police said it seized 41 IEDs, 4,000kg explosives, 18,000 detonators, and 34 gelatine sticks from different parts of the district in the past three months in the special search operations.
Among the seized materials is 3,811kg explosives, which were a part of the 5,000kg looted from Odisha's Sundargarh on May 27.
IG (South Chhotanagpur) Manoj Kaushik said, "The recovery of IEDs has become the top priority of security forces in the district. The looted explosives in Sundargarh were prime materials which could have been converted into IEDs by merely inserting detonators. The existence of large cache of explosives with Maoists is a major threat to safety of police personnel."
"IEDs slowed down our operations in the past few months.
Civilians are also becoming targets," he said.
CRPF sub-inspector Sunil Kumar Mandal and assistant sub-inspector Satyawan Kumar Singh were martyred while six personnel were injured in IED blasts triggered by Maoists in Saranda this year.
Saranda forest and its adjoining areas remain the last Maoist bastion in the state. Key Maoist leaders, including politburo member Misir Besra and central committee member Anal are hiding in the area.

Chhattisgarh: Maoist killed in encounter in Indravati National Park region

RAIPUR: A Maoist was killed in an encounter between Maoists and security forces in the dense forested terrain of the Indravati National Park area in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, police said on Saturday. Police said they are yet to ascertain the identity of the slain Maoist. (Representational image) Police said the operation was launched based on intelligence about the presence of top Maoist cadres on Friday and has since witnessed intermittent gunfire. Inspector general (IG) of police, Bastar range, Sundarraj P, said that security forces acting on credible inputs initiated a coordinated search operation involving multiple units and during the course of the operation, the body of a male Maoist was recovered from the encounter site along with weapons. 'We are yet to ascertain his identity,' the IG said. Given the active nature of the operation, officials have refrained from releasing further details to ensure the safety of personnel engaged in the mission. Security operations in the Bastar division have intensified in recent months, with forces targeting senior Maoist leadership believed to be operating in the region. The IG remarked that security forces are fully committed to sustaining anti-Maoist operations even during the monsoon season and emphasised that the CPI (Maoist), which has been declared unlawful, now has no option but to surrender and give up violence. 'Over the past 18 months, a total of 415 Maoist cadres have been killed in various encounters across the Bastar range. This number includes top CPI (Maoist) leaders such as general secretary Basavaraju alias Ganganna and central committee member Gautam alias Sudhakar, marking a significant setback for the insurgent group,' the IG said.

Why anti-terrorism squad arrived after Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's wedding in Venice — no, it's not due to protests

It wasn't just the star-studded guest list or opulent venues that made headlines during Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's €40 million wedding in Venice, it was also the unexpected arrival of Italy's anti-terrorism unit. But contrary to what many might assume, their involvement had nothing to do with the widespread protests that shadowed the billionaire's celebration. The unit was there since a dress was missing. As per a report by The Guardian, Sánchez packed 27 designer dresses for her wedding with Bezos — but reportedly left with only 26. Her main ceremony gown is safe. According to Corriere della Sera, the missing garment may have been stolen by someone who gatecrashed Friday night's party. The situation reportedly became so chaotic that Italy's anti-terrorism unit, Digos, was called in to the island. The couple, now honeymooning in Taormina, Sicily, tied the knot during a three-day celebration on the exclusive island of San Giorgio. As per The Guardian, sources familiar with the matter confirmed that a dress had indeed vanished, but denied it was stolen. They also denied reports of a dress catching fire, allegedly involving a vintage Dolce & Gabbana piece, or that gatecrashers infiltrated the event. The couple believes the dress would 'turn up' at some point, so they did not file any formal complaints. The wedding, said to cost between €40 million and €48 million, featured themed parties and a guest list that included Oprah Winfrey, Orlando Bloom, and Kim Kardashian. Yet, across Venice, anti-Bezos protests intensified, forcing a last-minute change in the location of Saturday's reception. As per a report, the protest saw activists project the slogan 'No Kings, No Bezos' in green laser across the bell tower at St Mark's Square. Another involved a Bezos mannequin floating along the Grand Canal on an Amazon box holding fake dollars. Despite the backlash, Venice's mayor defended the event, saying it brought money to the city. Now in Sicily, the couple are staying at the San Domenico Palace hotel in Taormina, made famous by 'The White Lotus', a television series. Unlike Venice, their arrival has been met with enthusiasm from local leaders. 'Jeff and Lauren, we welcome you with open arms,' said Matteo Francilia, mayor of Furci Siculo, a small town near Messina, The Guardian reported. 'Leave behind the beautiful lagoon with its absurd complaints! Here in Furci Siculo you'll find sun, sea and genuine people, who would welcome you with open arms.'
