Esports World Cup 2025 — USD 70 million prize pool, 25 titles, Cristiano Ronaldo the ambassador
Esports, now a multi-billion-dollar industry, is a medal sport at the Asian Games. It is no longer knocking on the door of mainstream sport, it's kicking it down.
A fresh new chapter of that will be the Esports World Cup 2025, set to be played in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between July 8 and August 24. The tournament will have 26 events across 25 titles with a prize pool of a whopping USD 70 million, the biggest in an esports event ever.
Galaxy of stars
The World Cup aims to draw more people into the tournament through glamour, traditional sports and entertainment.
And who does it turn to? Cristiano Ronaldo, a Portugal legend, a European champion and the most-followed individual on Instagram. The 40-year-old, who won the UEFA Nations League last month, was named the brand ambassador of the tournament.
In every era, a rare few rise above the rest. Now it's your time.

The tournament's opening ceremony will feature American rapper Post Malone, who is an avid gamer too, having played titles like Warzone and PUBG live for fans on the streaming platform, Twitch.
Moreover, Amazon Prime has released a five-part documentary on the tournament, named 'Esports World Cup: Level Up'. Sports docu-series has been a proven avenue to expand reach, with Drive to Survive drawing over 360,000 fans to Formula 1 after its first season.
Another sporting spectacle in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia has emerged as the sporting capital of Asia, hosting major tournaments in football, motorsports, golf and combat sports.
In esports, the country has shone both on and off the gaming stage, producing FIFAe World Cup champions like Mossad 'Msdossary' Al Dossary (in pic) and investing USD 37.8 billion through Savvy Games Group, owned by the Public Investment Fund, for the development of gaming.
The inaugural edition of the Esports World Cup was also held in Saudi Arabia last year, and this time, the tournament returns with more titles (26 instead of 22) and a higher prize pool.
Uncharted territory
Among traditional sports, Chess – a touchstone for the brain — has always maintained a niche for itself. So has esports, building its own ecosystem and then making inroads into traditional sporting events.
The World Cup will now see a merger of the two: online chess entering uncharted territory, with a prize pool of USD 1.5 million.
Twelve of the 16 players were selected from the Champions Chess Tour (CCT) 2025, while the final four would be confirmed in the Last Chance Qualifiers (LCQ) later this month.

India will have a chance to shine both as a team and/or player(s).
At the LCQ, Grandmasters Nihal Sarin and Aravindh Chithambaram from the Indian esports organisation S8UL will have a chance to represent the tricolour, while Praggnanandhaa, the highest-ranking Indian at the time of writing, will compete as part of Dutch organisation, Team Liqud.

Even if all three are unsuccessful in qualifying for the finals, Arjun Erigaisi, representing Gen.G, will still be in contention to make India proud.

Alireza Firouzja, Fabiano Caruana (Team Liquid), Ian Nepomniachtchi (Aurora Gaming), Magnus Carlsen (Team Liquid), Nodirbek Abdusattorov (NAVI), Vladislav Artemiev (Team Spirit), Arjun Erigaisi (Gen.G), Hikaru Nakamura (Team Falcons), Jan-Krzysztof Duda (Twisted Minds), Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (Team Vitality). The Nanterre prosecutor's office told AFP that they had requested that the investigating judge refer the rape charge to a criminal court."It is now up to the investigating magistrate to make a decision within the framework of his order," the prosecutor's office told AFP in a statement. Hakimi, 26, played a major role in PSG's run to their first Champions League title, the full-back scoring the opener in the 5-0 rout of Inter Milan in the final in May. Hakimi, who helped Morocco to their historic progress to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, was charged in March, 2023 with raping a 24-year-old woman. According to Colin, her client had "been the target of an attempted extortion". "Nothing in this case suggests an attempted extortion," Rachel-Flore Pardo, the lawyer representing the woman, said. India all set for a strong show at Asian Surfing C'ships
CHENNAI: The waves off the coast in Mahabalipuram are set to grace the wave-blades of top surfers as the week-long Asian Surfing Championships is set to kick-off on Sunday. The event is crucial as it serves as a qualifier to next year's Asian Games at Aichi Nagoya, Japan. Over 150 athletes from 20 Asian countries have landed here to prove their mettle as well as grab quotas for the Asian Games. India have already been secured two quotas last year and this event will give them an opportunity to grab some more. For Surfing Federation of India's (SFI) president Arun Vasu, this Asian meet is of a huge significance. Apart from overlooking the sport since 2012 (when the organisation was not even recognised by the sports ministry), organising this tournament, he reckons, is a big step towards matching the world standards, something he saw in the 2023 and 2024 Asian meets in Maldives. "When we travelled there, we saw how they maintained their standards in organising tournaments. It's an amazing opportunity for our Indian team because one, of course, to compete at such a (high) level and secondly, it's their home break," he added. Eight of the 12 Indian team athletes are from Tamil Nadu and have trained in the same waters that they are set to compete in. Senior national champions like Kishore Kumar and Kamali P are expected to put on a strong show.
