Manjrekar Warns KL Against Being 'One-Hundred Wonder', Sees 'Pant Carrying Form'

News1815 hours ago

Sanjay Manjrekar urged KL Rahul to step up as a senior batter in India's Test team and praised Rishabh Pant's consistency and mental strength.
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar feels it is time for KL Rahul to step up and realise his full potential, and can't afford to be a one-century wonder.
After the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Rahul has become the most senior batter in India's Test team. With the spotlight on him, Rahul, one of the few experienced players in a young batting lineup, is expected to perform, provide stability, and guide emerging talents. Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant has cemented his role in India's batting lineup, with his twin centuries in the Leeds Test showcasing his match-winning abilities.
Manjrekar praised Pant's consistency in the red-ball format, highlighting his achievement of becoming the second wicketkeeper in cricket history, after Andy Flower, to score twin centuries in a Test. Manjrekar expressed his belief that Pant enjoys batting in Test cricket. He highlighted the mental strength required to score two hundreds in a Test match, emphasising that this is a hallmark of an exceptional player.
'I think he will because it seems like he enjoys batting in Test cricket. Any batter who gets two hundreds in a Test match, it takes a lot out of you mentally, not so much physically, getting a hundred in the first innings, and 48 hours later, you have the same kind of reserve to get another hundred. So that is a hallmark of an exceptional player," Manjrekar was quoted as saying on Star Sports.
Manjrekar stressed the need for KL Rahul to perform more consistently, especially during this transitional phase for Team India. He pointed out that while Rahul has the talent, he must avoid being the kind of player who scores just one exceptional century in a five-match series.
Why Manjrekar Is Comparing Rahul To Pant?
Comparing Rahul's situation to Pant's recent performances, Manjrekar emphasised that India needs Rahul to step up regularly and take on more responsibility as one of the senior batters. Indian cricket desperately needs him to avoid being a one-century wonder or a one-Test-match performer.
' Rishabh Pant enjoys Test matches. He has not got enough runs. So he is hungry. I see Pant carrying his form, but there is another senior batter in the team, who now has got no choice but to carry his form right through the series. Indian cricket needs him badly, and KL Rahul cannot be a one-hundred wonder or a one-Test-match performer," Manjrekar added.

Paralympian Sheetal Devi Proves Nothing Is Impossible, Even Steering With Her Feet

Taking to Instagram, Sheetal Devi shared a video, where she can be seen driving a car through the scenic roads of Jammu & Kashmir using her feet. After winning the bronze medal at the Paris Paralympic 2024, Indian athlete Sheetal Devi is once again making headlines, but this time not for her sporting achievements, but for confidently taking the driver's seat. Taking to Instagram, Sheetal Devi shared a video, where she can be seen driving a car through the scenic roads of Jammu & Kashmir using her feet. The vehicle she is driving is a specially modified Mahindra Scorpio N, gifted to her by Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra after she turned 18. Sharing the clip, Sheetal wrote: 'Took on the driver's seat for a while, loving every moment of it." Along with it, she left her followers with a powerful message: 'Never say NEVER." Within just a few hours, the video went viral, garnering millions of views and heartwarming reactions from fans and followers alike. The comments section was quickly filled with messages of admiration and pride. One user wrote, 'Aap toh desh ki saari ladkiyon ke liye ek inspiration ho, salute." Another added, 'Passed in one more challenge." advetisement Who is Sheetal Devi? Sheetal Devi was born with phocomelia, a rare congenital condition that left her without arms. Yet, what many would see as a limitation became her driving force. From an early age, she pursued sports and proved that determination knows no physical boundaries. During her initial para-archery training, coaches attempted to help her use prosthetics. But when that didn't work, they took a different path, one that changed her life. Inspired by Matt Stutzman, the American archer born without arms who won silver at the London 2012 Paralympics using his legs, Sheetal embraced alternative shooting techniques. She tried every method possible, from shooting with her legs and her jaw to adapting and experimenting with different techniques and perfecting her craft with relentless dedication. That dedication bore fruit. In 2023, she became the world's number one para archer in the open category. She went on to win two golds and one silver at the Asian Para Games, followed by a silver medal at the World Archery Para Championships. Her defining moment came during the Paris Paralympics 2024, where she not only secured a bronze medal but also broke the previous world record of 698 points, scoring 703 out of 720. This made her one of just two athletes in history to win a Paralympic medal without arms. Mahindra's Tribute to India's Paralympians Sheetal Devi is not the only Paralympian to be recognised by Mahindra & Mahindra. The auto giant has previously honoured several other athletes who have brought glory to India on the global stage. Among them is Avani Lekhara, who bagged gold in the Women's 10m Air Rifle and bronze in the 50m Air Rifle events at the Paralympic Games. Then there's Sumit Antil, who clinched gold at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. The company also gifted a specially customised XUV700 to Deepa Malik, a Paralympian and a prominent figure in Indian para-sports. With each gesture, Mahindra continues to reinforce its commitment to celebrating grit, resilience, and the indomitable spirit of India's para-athletes. First Published:

AB de Villiers Slams 'Mismanagement' As Gautam Gambhir Restricts Jasprit Bumrah To 3 Tests

On the tour of England, one of the toughest places for the Indian team to win a Test series, the fact that the tourists would have Jasprit Bumrah, arguably the best pacer in the world, available for just three games out of five, is baffling for many. Bumrah, who featured in almost the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) season for the Mumbai Indians, has been allotted just three games against England. India's head coach Gautam Gambhir already made the decision clear, making many wonder why lesser-important games couldn't be removed from Bumrah's schedule to manage his workload. Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers, who also had to manage the workload of Dale Steyn during their active days, isn't onboard with the Indian team management's decision over the call to give Bumrah just three matches on the 5-Test tour. "He is probably the top bowler in the world in all formats right now. So, it's very difficult to decide a way to rest him," De Villiers said on his YouTube channel. "But in my opinion, Test cricket is the ultimate form of the game. And this Test series probably would've been the one, in my opinion, to get him ready for all five Test matches." Citing Steyn's example, De Villiers said that Bumrah should've ideally been rested in lesser-important T20Is and ODIs. "That's what we used to do with Dale (Steyn). Rest him in lesser important T20 and ODI series and get him ready for the big Test series against Australia, England, and India away from home... New Zealand to a certain extent, depending on the rankings at that time," he explained. The former Proteas captain even threw the word 'mismanagement' by the Indian team as he questioned what led to the team taking such a call. "So, I don't know if it was mismanagement or perhaps because he recently got back from injury, sort of saw the IPL as the warmup phase," he said. "Maybe, went to the surgeon, who let him know, 'You can't play the five Test matches.' So, I mean you got to respect that, and at the end of the day, it's up to Team India to sort of manage him well," he added. "It doesn't get bigger than that, guys, except for maybe the WTC final."

IND Women vs ENG women 2nd T20I: India hopes for Mandhana encore, Harmanpreet availability against England

A confident India will aim to capitalise on opener Smriti Mandhana's sublime form and hope for skipper Harmanpreet Kaur's availability to achieve another big win when the second Women's T20I against England is played in Bristol on Tuesday (July 1, 2025). Mandhana's maiden T20I century in the opening game at Nottingham guided India to a massive 97-run win, and the likely presence of skipper Harmanpreet — who was rested for the first game as a precautionary measure following a head injury sustained during a warm-up match — for the second game would only add to the hosts' worries. Mandhana's stroke-filled century would have rung alarm bells in the English camp as it tries to find answers to the dramatic batting collapse it suffered while chasing a steep 210-run total. It was a day when Mandhana's entertaining innings brought the hosts under tremendous pressure, which was later exploited by the Indian bowlers. India struck twice early and the slow bowler, especially left-arm spinner Shree Charani who grabbed four wickets in her maiden T20I, complete the demolition job. Mandhana, who led the T20I run-scoring charts last year, seemed to have picked up from where she had left off, smashing all the English bowlers with impunity. Though the left-handed batter said after the match that the T20I format wasn't her forte, it was a statement the cricket experts would take with a pinch of salt. The India vice-captain's power-hitting was on full display as she collected most of her boundaries on the off-side, while her three maximums came on the on-side. The long camp in Bengaluru followed by their early arrival in England and a couple of tour matches seem to have helped the Indian players get into the rhythm of the shortest format as they showed no signs of rustiness in Nottingham. India looked like a well-knit unit despite missing their premier seamers, Renuka Singh Thakur and Pooja Vastrakar, who are injured. Harleen Deol at No. 3 looked the right call as she forged a 94-run stand for the second wicket with Mandhana to set up the platform for a big total. While the bilateral white-ball series may not have immediate implications, it will certainly give the young Indian players the look and feel of the things to come when the T20 World Cup is held next year in England. And, the 20-year-old debutant Shree Charani did really well in her maiden outing, delivering a dream spell of 3.5-0-12-4 to set up India's win by displaying a lot of discipline and focus to strangle the England batters. England skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt (66) waged a lone battle even as Indian spinners enjoyed a cakewalk, with Deepti Sharma and Radha Yadav too chipping in with a couple of wickets each. Squads: India: Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Yastika Bhatia (wk), Harleen Deol, Richa Ghosh (wk), Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma, Amanjot Kaur, Sneh Rana, Sayali Satghare, Deepti Sharma, Kranti Goud, Arundhati Reddy, Shree Charani, Radha Yadav. England: Natalie Sciver-Brunt (c), Tammy Beaumont (wk), Sophia Dunkley, Amy Jones (wk), Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Alice Capsey, Charlie Dean, Paige Scholfield, Em Arlott, Lauren Bell, Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Filer, Linsey Smith, Issy Wong. Match starts at 11:00pm IST.
