ICC To Set Up 'Working Group' To Sort Out LA28 Qualification, Format Restructuring
ICC to form a Working Group to decide LA28 Olympic qualification, review cricket formats, and explore Test restructuring. Minimum age for internationals remains 15.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to form a Working Group to take care of some of the pressing issues globally. This was among the key takeaways of the Chief Executives' Committee (CEC) meeting held in Singapore on Friday. The meeting was chaired by new ICC CEO Sanjog Gupta, and ICC Chair Jay Shah attended in his ex-officio capacity.
According to Cricbuzz, the Working Group will look after the structure of various formats of the game and the qualification pathway for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Also, the formation of this group is expected to be fast-tracked and could be finalised as early as Saturday, during the upcoming ICC Board meeting.
The Working Group will reportedly include members from both the CEC and the Board, and will be given clear responsibilities — the top priority being to recommend a qualification system for the LA28 Olympics.
The gentlemen's game will return in the Olympics with six teams each in the men's and women's categories. However, the qualification process still remains a concern. The global body seems divided on this, as many believe that world rankings should be used to determine the qualifiers, whereas some have suggested organising a qualifying tournament. But holding a tournament seems unlikely due to the tight schedule and a packed Future Tours Programme (FTP).
Meanwhile, the proposal for a two-tier Test format — a hot topic in recent times — was not discussed at the CEC meeting. However, it is expected that the Working Group will explore this issue and suggest whether changes are needed in the structure of Test cricket. The same applies to possible adjustments in ODI and T20I formats.
Minimum Age To Play International Cricket
Another key decision taken at the meeting was to keep the minimum age for playing senior international cricket at 15, based on recommendations from the ICC's Medical Advisory Committee. However, exceptions may be allowed in special circumstances.

File photo NEW DELHI: The Union govt is set to introduce a sports governance Bill in the Parliament session starting Monday. It has been drafted as part of India's preparations to strengthen its bid for Olympic Games 2036. The proposed bill, prepared by the sports ministry, has been approved by the Cabinet, which has asked it to come up with a better title for the same. Sources said the bill gains importance considering that sports governance is an important parameter for bid evaluation. Recently, India officially presented Ahmedabad's bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The bill provides for setting up of a National Sports Board (NSB), a central authority responsible for granting recognition to national sports governing bodies (NSGBs) and ensuring compliance. The NSB will have the flexibility and autonomy to prepare requisite guidelines and regulations for governance of sports. The Bill mandates the formation of an athlete committee in each NSGB for representation of athletes. Officials said NSGBs will have five members, including two sportspersons of outstanding merit and two members from the athlete committee, with sound representation of women. There is also a proposal in the bill for a National Sports Election Panel for ensuring free and fair elections to NSGBs. Further, to reduce the number of court cases, the Bill proposes setting up of a National Sports Tribunal, which will serve as a single-window system for resolution of disputes. It proposes to allocate Rs 10 crore for setting up the NSB and the tribunal.

ICC asks USA Cricket to hold elections within three months
The International Cricket Council (ICC) at its annual conference on Saturday kept USA Cricket (USAC) on notice and asked the board to undertake comprehensive governance reforms. 'The ICC reiterated its previous position and confirmed that the organisation remains on notice. USA Cricket is required to undertake comprehensive governance reforms, including but not limited to completing free and fair elections within a three-month period,' the apex body said in a statement. The ICC had issued a notice to USA Cricket in July last year for non compliance with its governance rules, after the country had co-hosted the T20 World Cup with West Indies. The move aims at USAC getting a 'national governing body' status from the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee, which is a requisite for the sport to be included at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. News reports had stated that the ICC is working towards suspending the US board, but with cricket's return to the Olympics at stake, the ICC is extending a chance to USAC to set its house in order.
