BYU Defensive Coordinator Jay Hill Sends Blunt Message to Players in New NIL Era
BYU Defensive Coordinator Jay Hill Sends Blunt Message to Players in New NIL Era originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
BYU football hosted its Media Day golf tournament at Cedar Hills Golf Club on Monday. The mix of current BYU players and coaches, former BYU players, and other members of the BYU community came together right before the Cougars pulled in the program's top recruit, five-star quarterback Ryder Lyons.

The BYU coach who will get the best read on the phenom signal-caller in two years is Jay Hill. The Cougars defensive coordinator took time out of his busy schedule to talk about the offseason with ESPN the Fan in Salt Lake City. He was asked an array of questions, including his set up going into fall camp. With the new era of college athletics, some players have come to the table wanting opportunities handed to them. However, Hill doesn't subscribe to that type of thought process when it comes to his defensive scheme.
"We had guys come to me saying, 'Coach, I need to know I'm the starter.' And I said, 'Be the starter. Earn it,'" Hill said. "I'm not guaranteeing anything. That's not fair to the 105 other guys fighting for that spot. If you want to be built for the NFL, you can't expect guarantees. If you can't beat out the guys at BYU, how are you going to make it in the NFL?"
When head coach Kalani Sitake hired Hill away from Weber State, everybody knew the level of expectations and it hadn't changed in Provo. As the Cougars moved over to the Big 12, the strength between the two coaches grew and they now know they're building a better program from the inside out. It's the NFL model with a college touch of consistency. While some players want a guarantee, Hill wants talented playmakers who will work at being the 'next man up'.

"Last year, the sum was greater than the individual parts," Hill admitted. "That's a great defense. We had smart guys doing their jobs and trusting each other. I thought we played very good defense. Recruiting is getting better each year. The Big 12 helps. Our depth is stronger. Yeah, we lost some key guys—Batty, Blake Mangelson, John Nelson, Jakob Robinson—but I don't think enough people understand how good they were. Still, we're just scratching the surface of what BYU can be talent-wise."

Pep Guardiola reveals Kyle Walker reunion as Joao Cancelo's Manchester City reunion looms
Manchester City have been reunited with Kyle Walker in the United States this week, according to manager Pep Guardiola. The England international is fresh off the back of a short-term loan deal in Italian football with AC Milan, having left the Etihad Stadium during the January transfer window in search of a fresh challenge during a difficult campaign. Advertisement Walker's exit left a sour taste in the mouths of many Manchester City supporters, with some feeling as though their club had been betrayed by it's most senior player and official club captain at the lowest point in the season. However, despite the feeling that City's association with their long-standing right-back is coming to a close, there appears to have been a reunion involving all parties whilst at the FIFA Club World Cup. That reunion comes despite Pep Guardiola insisting late on last season that Kyle Walker would not be a part of his Manchester City squad, even in the event of the veteran defender not joining AC Milan on a permanent agreement. Speaking during his pre-match press conference ahead of Manchester City's meeting with Al Hilal, Guardiola was also keen to insist upon the fond memories he has of working with Joao Cancelo, and the circumstances that also led to the defender's exit. Advertisement 'All players that have been with us I have incredible memories! I have incredible respect for Joao and everyone. Always when you take decisions it's not easy,' Guardiola admitted. 'When your boss tells you, 'You don't work. Stay at home', how would you feel? That is what players feel when you say you don't play! He has an incredible heart, but he was upset and sad because he didn't play, he LOVES to play football,' he added. 'When I said, 'Training is over', he said, 'No, no! One more! One more!' He LOVES to play football, and I'm happy he had the experience in Barcelona, and after in Al Hilal, happy he's back from injury. Joao was nominated best full-back in the year we won the Quadruple. He's an exceptional player; he can play right, left, both legs without problem.' And while admitting he is looking forward to reuniting with the Portugal international in Orlando when Al Hilal take on Manchester City in the FIFA Club World Cup, Pep Guardiola also appeared to reveal a link-up with Kyle Walker following his loan at AC Milan. Advertisement 'I'm happy tomorrow to see him [Joao Cancelo], like I saw Kyle [Walker] last day here, and the players that play in Juventus that played with us – always it's nice when you play these tournaments to review players that were important,' said Guardiola. 'We won many, many things with him [Cancelo], many, many things. And that remains all the time, and after the situations that happen sometimes are understandable. We had to take a decision, we took it, but it remains what we lived and the person who he is!' Despite Kyle Walker appearing to reunite with Manchester City in the United States, the feeling remains within the club that the 35-year-old will bring a permanent end to his association with the club this summer. While there has been tenuous interest from the likes of Everton in the Premier League, nothing concrete involving a deal for Walker is yet to develop, and it remains to be seen where he will end up come the start of the new season.

Cubs' World Series Aspirations Hinge on Acquiring a Lockdown Closer at Trade Deadline
Cubs' World Series Aspirations Hinge on Acquiring a Lockdown Closer at Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Cubs are one of the best teams in baseball, with a 49-34 record and a two-game lead in the NL Central. Their high-powered offense ranks third in the league, according to FanGraphs, and is feared throughout the majors. While Chicago's starting pitching rotation could use another marquee arm at the deadline, Jameson Taillon and Matthew Boyd did a tremendous job in the absence of Shota Imanaga and Justin Steele. Now, with Imanaga back, the focus of Chicago's trade deadline plans shifts to the bullpen – primarily the closer role. Advertisement ESPN's Jesse Rodgers recently spoke about Chicago's World Series aspirations and why they may hinge on their aggressiveness to acquire a lockdown closer. 'You knew they were serious about the World Series [in 2016] when they went out and traded for Aroldis Chapman,' Rogers told Lance Brozdowski on the Cubs Weekly Podcast. 'You'll know really how serious the Cubs are in terms of going all the way if they replace Palencia with someone better and more experienced. Because it feels like a little bit of a luxury right now the way Palencia is pitching to go out and get another closer.' Shutting down the ninth inning is a necessity during the playoffs. It is rare for teams to succeed in October with a patchwork bullpen or a closer-by-committee and be successful. It is not impossible, but the odds of winning a World Series increase with a secure closer. Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell (11) smiles before a game between the Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks at Wrigley Field. Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Porter Hodge was the Cubs' initial closer, but a stint on the injured list thrust Daniel Palencia into the role. Palencia, 25, has been stellar in 27 appearances, pitching to a 1.86 ERA and converting eight of his nine save opportunities. Advertisement While Palencia and Hodge have done enough to keep the Cubs atop the NL Central standings, adding another elite bullpen arm will only deepen their chances of contending for a World Series. A reunion with Chapman is a possibility, but is not the only option. The Baltimore Orioles will likely be sellers, leading to Felix Bautista potentially being available, and even Nationals' All-Star Kyle Finnegan could be an underrated addition to Chicago's pen. The Cubs currently hold the third-best record in baseball, setting themselves up for a postseason appearance. Yet, if they want to increase their World Series odds and further cement their standing among the MLB's elite, acquiring a premium closer should be on the trade deadline itinerary.
