Nagpur: For young Dr Sushant Deshmukh, a normal day at his hostel near Ahmedabad airport turned into a haunting memory that will last a lifetime. "We see planes take off and land every day from here.
It's routine. But on this tragic day, everything changed in seconds," said Dr Sushant, speaking to TOI over the phone from Ahmedabad.
Sushant, who hails from Nagpur, is currently posted in Ahmedabad as part of his medical internship. On June 12, Air India Dreamliner flight AI 171 crashed into the hostel block adjacent to BJ Medical College, where many MBBS students and junior doctors like him stay. "If the plane had tilted just a bit differently, it would have crashed directly into the hospital building.
The death toll would have been unimaginable," he said.
"It was horrifying, but strangely, crashing into the hostel actually resulted in fewer casualties than it would have caused otherwise."
While Dr Sushant is physically safe, the emotional impact runs deep. "Two of our hostel inmates have relatives who are still missing. Around 50 students from the adjacent intern hostel were injured. Three are still in the ICU.
The rest are shaken, but safe."
He confirmed that his own hostel, Atulyam, suffered fire damage and is currently sealed by authorities. "I've temporarily shifted to stay with local friends. Things are slowly getting back to normal. Hospital work is gradually resuming," he added.
"My son is safe. But his heart is breaking for his fellow students," said Dr Sushama Deshmukh, a senior gynaecologist of Nagpur. "He called me and his father right after the incident.
Both of us were in surgery. Later, when we called back, he told us he was safe. The national news break started later," said Dr Deshmukh.
The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), in collaboration with the Resident Doctors' Association of BJ Medical College, has released an official update on the status of medical students affected by the crash. Dr Dhawal Gameti, vice president of FAIMA and president of RDA BJMC, shared that 50–60 MBBS students have been admitted, all in stable condition; 4–5 MBBS students remain missing, while 2–3 are in HDU or ICU; 3–4 relatives of super-specialist resident doctors are still untraceable, and the wife of one doctor was found dead.
"Please do not panic," FAIMA urged in its statement. "We request everyone, including the general public, to donate blood wherever possible. Your contribution can help save lives."

Air India starts online yoga for stressed crew members; pilots say address real issues

NEW DELHI: Air India has begun conducting 'online yoga' classes for its crew members, including pilots who have been under severe psychological stress post the June 12 Ahmedabad crash. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had soon after that accident directed major Indian carriers to hold post trauma mental health workshop for their flight crew. AI had reported a 'minor increase' in sick leaves by pilots after AI 171 crash, with 112 reporting sick on June 16. In a recent mail to crew members, AI's safety head Captain Henry Donohoe said: '(AI's wellness app) offers a comprehensive suite of physical and emotional well-being support programmes. These include professional counselling sessions, online yoga classes, guided care circles and reflection sessions. In addition, we encourage you to explore self-care app which provides a wide range of mental health resources, including personalised plans and sessions tailored to individual needs. ' While the same may be aimed at improving crew members' mental wellbeing, large number of AI pilots say the airline needs to take 'concrete steps if it is indeed serious' about the same. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo 'First of all, AI should revert to printed rosters being emailed to crew members as that allowed them to plan their lives. Now rostering (who will operate which flight when) is on an app which changes constantly. We can't plan our life as we are constantly at the beck and call of the airline. This should immediately change,' said multiple pilots. With rosters on the app, crew members say they have no way to prove that the app earlier had a different flight marked for them which has now been changed. Refusing to operate as per the constantly being updated app-based rostering has consequences. This despite the fact that DGCA after the Ahmedabad crash had directed major airlines 'not to push' crew to come to work if they are not feeling upto it to operate a flight. The reason: Mental health affects physical health, which in turn affects the ability to operate flights safely. In fact, a majority of DGCA notices to AI have been regarding crew scheduling by the airline. AI pilots want weekly off to be given once a week instead of being given after 168 hours or on the eighth day. 'There is no emotional quotient in AI as of now. Everything is app and mail-based. Even for online yoga, there's an app. The stress level is very high in the airline and there's no real support at this difficult time,' said pilots. 'AI has been putting crew members on standby duty whenever it wants, thereby inducing more stress among pilots even though there are required number of standby crew when the flight programme is published. Then there are continuing pay issues with the fix pay being reduced to 40 hours from 70 earlier by only one of them. Our weekly offs are not printed on the rosters. As it is this was causing both mental and financial stress among pilots. The crash has made things even worse,' they said. Medical colleges increased from 387 in 2014 to 780

New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) The number of medical colleges increased from 387 to 780, undergraduate seats from 51,348 to 1,15,900 and postgraduate seats from 31,185 to 74,306 since 2014, Union Health Minister J P Nadda told the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. Responding to a question, Nadda said that the government has increased the number of medical colleges, under graduate (UG) and post graduate (PG) seats. There are 13,86,157 registered allopathic doctors and 7,51,768 registered practitioners in the AYUSH system of medicine. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends a doctor to population ratio of 1:1000. 'Assuming that 80 per cent of registered practitioners in both the allopathic and AYUSH systems are available, the doctor-population ratio in the country is estimated to be 1:811," Nadda said. Nadda said that public health is a state subject and the matter regarding engagement of available medical professionals in the country in various healthcare setups comes under the purview of state governments. However, to bridge healthcare delivery gaps, the government continues to support states and UTs through various central sector/centrally sponsored schemes/programmes by providing financial assistance, capacity building, provision of essential medicines, diagnostics, teleconsultation services, etc. to ensure effective and accessible primary healthcare. The Family Adoption Programme (FAP) has been incorporated into the MBBS curriculum to provide equitable healthcare access to rural population, Nadda said. The FAP involves medical colleges adopting villages, and MBBS students adopting families within these villages. This enables regular follow-up of adopted families for vaccination, growth monitoring, menstrual hygiene, Iron and Folic Acid (IFA) supplementation, healthy lifestyle practices, nutrition, vector control, and medication adherence, the minister said. It also helps in educating families about ongoing government health programmes, he said. Further, the District Residency Programme (DRP) notified by the National Medical Commission (NMC) provides for a compulsory three-month posting cum training of PG medical students at district hospitals as a part of the course curriculum. The DRP benefits the public by strengthening healthcare delivery in rural and underserved areas. Launched in 2018, 1,78,154 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs) have been established as on July 15 by transforming existing Sub-Health Centres (SHCs) and Primary Health Centres (PHCs) to provide comprehensive primary healthcare closer to people's homes, Nadda said. Services have expanded from basic maternal and child care to twelve (12) comprehensive healthcare packages. With these reforms, annual footfall rose from 13.49 crore in the financial year 2019-20 to 128.08 crore in 2024-25. Over 117 crore individuals have been screened for hypertension, diabetes, oral, breast, and cervical cancers. Availability of medicines at AAMs and teleconsultations with specialists have improved accessibility, reduced costs, and addressed provider shortages, Nadda stated.
