[UPDATED] Anwar: Islamic values key to navigating AI, digital age
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said in the pursuit of AI mastery, its content and knowledge must not stray from the foundations of aqidah (faith) and akhlak (ethics).
Anwar said students from pondok institutions must also pursue Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and integrate into the mainstream education system, in addition to their traditional studies, to face future challenges.
"But times have changed. We must now ensure compatibility between the ulama and the umara (government), there are new knowledge disciplines, which have long been defended by the pondok (institutions).
"If not, students from pondok institutions will be left behind in mastering new strategies and technologies.
"Malaysia is among the countries spearheading AI development. But I realise, if AI is not embedded with values, not applied by morality, and enlightened knowledge, our AI is an AI made in America or the West," he said.
Anwar said this during his speech at the 2025 Malaysia Bermunajat programme at Masjid Putra here today.
Present was Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar.
He said that in a world increasingly driven by AI, digitalisation and economic competition, pondok remains the last line of defence for aqidah and knowledge.
At the same time, Anwar said Malaysia needs ulama who are articulate and well-versed, capable of delivering clarity and awareness to the people.
"The pondok schools will serve as a line of defence, a protective wall safeguarding the Islamic faith and knowledge, which later fuels the spirit of independence.
"They corrected our aqidah, preserved our culture as the foundation of education," he said.

PM ensures Port Dickson family receives aid
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for immediate assistance to be provided to a family in Kampung Baru Si Rusa, Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan, who are facing hardship after the head of the household suffered a stroke. Anwar, who visited Faridah Abbas' family with his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, said the family is fully dependent on Faridah after her husband, Mohamad Ali Abdul Malek, became bedridden in 2024. "Azizah and I are deeply affected by the ordeal faced by this family. I have instructed the Implementation Coordination Unit, Prime Minister's Department to provide the necessary facilities to help Faridah and her family continue their lives," he said in a Facebook post on Sunday (July 20). He said the assistance to be channelled includes a business kiosk to be provided for Faridah to earn an income by selling local delicacies and banana fritters, as well as levelling the front portion of the family house. "Hopefully, this kindness and assistance will ease the suffering of Faridah as she has to take care of her bedridden husband and her children," he said. Anwar is in Negri Sembilan for the Madani Government Leadership Ukhuwah Programme in conjunction with the retreat for administration members and Members of Parliament. The programme involves the participation of the Madani government administration members as part of efforts to build a network of brotherhood between leaders and the people in a relaxed, inclusive setting filled with values of togetherness. – Bernama

PM Holds Closed-Door Meetings With Negeri Sembilan PKR Members, Division Heads
SEREMBAN, July 20 (Bernama) – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim spent nearly an hour meeting Negeri Sembilan PKR members during his Party Organisation Strengthening Seminar and Presidential Tour for the state at a hotel here today. The closed-door session with the PKR president, attended by nearly 1,000 party members, was also joined by party vice-presidents Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, who is also Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Chang Lih Kang, and Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Seri R. Ramanan. Also present were PKR Secretary-General Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh, Women's wing chief Fadhlina Sidek, and Youth chief Muhammad Kamil Munim. bootstrap slideshow Following the main programme, Anwar held a closed-door meeting with Negeri Sembilan PKR division heads at the same hotel.
