IRCTC hotel scam case: Delhi court defers decision on framing charges against Lalu Prasad
The alleged scam took place between 2004 to 2009 when Lalu Prasad was the Union railway minister. During his tenure, two hotels were given on lease without following the norms.
Special judge Vishal Gogne, who was slated to deliver the verdict on Wednesday, deferred the pronouncement till August 5.
The Rouse Avenue Court had reserved its order on May 29 after hearing detailed arguments on framing of criminal conspiracy, cheating and corruption charges against the accused persons. Besides, Lalu Prasad and Tejashwi Yadav, Prem Gupta, Sarla Gupta, Railway officials Rakesh Saksena and P.K. Goyal are also accused in this case.
The case is related to the alleged irregularities in giving the contract of maintenance of two IRCTC hotels to a firm when Lalu Prasad Yadav was the Railway Minister.
One of the hotels was allotted to Sarla Gupta, who is wife of Prem Gupta, a close friend of Lalu Prasad.
He was also a Rajya Sabha MP at that time. As per the prosecution, the RJD leader got three acres of prime land through a benami company.
Claiming that there were no irregularities on his part, Lalu Prasad said that the tenders were awarded fairly and sought a discharge.
Last week, the Supreme Court refused to entertain Lalu Prasad's plea seeking a stay on the proceedings of the trial court in the land-for-job case.
He had moved a special leave petition (SLP) before the top court challenging the Delhi High Court's rejection of his application to stay the trial proceedings.
This came after the trial court took cognisance of the multiple charge sheets filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
As per the CBI, during the period 2004-2009, Lalu Prasad (then Railway Minister) had obtained pecuniary advantages in the form of transfer of landed property in the name of his family members in lieu of appointment of substitutes in Group 'D' posts in different Zones of the Railways.
A number of residents of Patna themselves or through their family members sold and gifted their land in favour of the family members of Lalu Prasad and a private company controlled by him and his family.

Fake documents used to encroach KHB sites in Yelahanka
Bengaluru: Followingthe exposure of illegal encroachment of a corner site worth ₹10 crore in Sector 'A' of Yelahanka New Town, yet another case has emerged from Sector 'B' where a site has allegedly been grabbed using forged documents. Preliminary Lokayukta investigations now indicate possible irregularities in the allotment of as many as 178 sites belonging to the Karnataka Housing Board (KHB). The Lokayukta Police have requested all documentation related to the acquisition, auction, and allotment of these 178 sites from the KHB Commissioner. In response, the Commissioner has sought one week's time to furnish the records. Notices have also been issued to sub-registrars of Yelahanka, Gandhinagar, Chickajala, and Byatarayanapura demanding registration details of these sites. At the centre of this fraud are two specific plots — Site No. 271 (Sector A) and Site No. 239 (Sector B) — that were allegedly registered in private names using fake documents. In the case of Site No. 271, a retired KHB Assistant Executive Engineer, Syed Asgar, is said to be directly involved. Investigators suspect that multiple sites among the 178 may have been similarly encroached. Although the irregularity regarding Site No. 239 came to light in 2022, the KHB is yet to register a criminal case against the accused — S.V. Hariprasad and two others — sparking allegations of intentional delay. The 175.95 sq.m. plot had never been auctioned or allotted, but forged ownership papers were allegedly used to claim registration. KHB had acquired 203.16 acres in Sector A and 157 acres in Sector B in the late 1970s to develop residential layouts. Some premium corner sites were retained by KHB for later public auction. Only the KHB Commissioner has the authority to issue auction confirmation letters. However, in these two fraudulent cases, no such official communication exists, pointing to blatant forgery. The scandal came to light thanks to social activist K.S. Chandrashekar, who had filed RTI applications in 2021. When KHB claimed no allotment records existed, Chandrashekar gathered proof through alternate channels and submitted a formal complaint to the ACB, pushing for criminal proceedings. Following this, the Lokayukta has now filed a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act against retired AEE Syed Asgar, Govindayya, and Satish Harini. With an estimated loss exceeding ₹20 crore, pressure is mounting on the authorities to act decisively against both internal collaborators and external encroachers.

Tej Pratap Yadav says will contest from Mahua in Bihar Election 2025: ‘Chacha nahi banenge CM'
Former Bihar minister Tej Pratap Yadav, who was recently expelled from the RJD by his father Lalu Prasad, announced last week that he would contest the upcoming Bihar elections from the Mahua assembly constituency in the Vaishali district as an Independent candidate. Tej Pratap is currently the MLA of Hasanpur seat in Samastipur. He said on Saturday evening, "Yes, this time, I will contest the elections from Mahua assembly seat as an Independent candidate. My opponents must have started to feel an itch." He said that "Team Tej Pratap" is a medium to reach the people. "I have people's support... a large number of people are now connected with my 'Team Tej Pratap Yadav', a social media platform to reach out to people," he was quoted by news agency PTI as saying. He took a dig at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, saying he would not retain his post after the assembly polls. "I am confident that 'chacha' (Nitish) will not become the CM... those who would form the government, if they talk about youths, employment, education, and health, Tej Pratap Yadav will stand with them," he said. Few days back, several reports claimed that Lalu Yadav's elder son Tej Pratap Yadav has "rebranded" himself. During his visit to the Mahua constituent assembly of Bihar earlier in July, Tej Pratap's supporters were seen holding — not an RJD flag – but a green-and-yellow flag with 'Team Tej Pratap Yadav' written on it. Tej Pratap's move had sparked rumours in the political circles, with many speculating whether he would launch a new political party or contest the upcoming Bihar Elections as an independent candidate. Tej Pratap, a former Bihar minister, was expelled from the RJD on May 25 by his father Lalu Prasad for six years. He was expelled a day after he reportedly confessed on social media to being "in a relationship" with a woman named Anushka. He, however, later deleted the Facebook post with a claim that his page was "hacked". Lalu Prasad also disowned Tej Pratap due to his "irresponsible behaviour". A few days after his expulsion from the party, Tej Pratap had alleged that there was a "conspiracy" to drive a wedge between him and his younger brother Tejashwi Yadav. He had voiced his sentiments in a couple of posts on his X handle, blaming the crisis on 'Jaichand', a metaphor for traitors. His expulsion came barely a few months ahead of the Bihar assembly polls, which the RJD will fight under the leadership of Tejashwi Yadav. Born to Prasad and Rabri Devi, both former chief ministers of Bihar, the two brothers are among four of nine siblings active in politics. Tej Pratap Yadav had made his political debut in the assembly polls of 2015, and is a second-term MLA with two brief stints in the state cabinet. The assembly elections in Bihar are scheduled to take place at the end of this year. Currently, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) holds power in the state under the leadership of CM Nitish Kumar.
