
UK-GCC free trade deal will provide big boost to UK exporters: Mooney
A UK-GCC Free Trade Agreement could be transformational for UK food and drink exports. If secured, it could lead to reduced or eliminated tariffs on key UK exports, making British products more competitive in the GCC market, said Sarah Mooney, HM Trade Commissioner for the Middle East and Pakistan.
Addressing a breakfast event in Dubai, she explained, 'Currently, UK exporters face tariffs of up to 25% on cereals, 15% on chocolate, 12% on baking products, 10% on sweet biscuits, and 5% on soft drinks. Removing these barriers would not only make British products more affordable but also enhance trade relationships and increase accessibility to high-quality UK food and drink across the region.'
'Given the GCC's appetite for premium and high-quality products, an FTA would provide a significant boost to UK exporters looking to expand their footprint in the Middle East.'
About the UK's participation in the recently concluded Gulfood, Sarah Mooney revealed, 'The UK has a significant presence at Gulfood this year, demonstrating our commitment to fostering trade relationships and showcasing the best of British food and drink. We have a robust cross-section of companies exhibiting at the UK Government stand, featuring products ranging from drinks to savoury snacks and much more besides. As well as dedicated country pavilions for Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, the UK's Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) is also exhibiting dairy and meat from Britain to highlight the UK's particular strength in these sectors. This broad presence reflects the high level of demand for British food and drink in the GCC, driven by our strong reputation for quality, provenance, and innovation.'
She added, 'We see Gulfood as an important platform to strengthen trade relationships, engage with key buyers, and highlight the UK's leadership in food sustainability and production standards.'
Highlighting the popularity of British food and drink in the region, Mooney said, 'British food and drink products are well respected in the GCC for several reasons. First and foremost, the UK has a globally recognised reputation for producing high-quality food and drink, underpinned by stringent food safety and traceability standards. Consumers in the region appreciate the rich heritage of British cuisine, from iconic cheeses and meats to innovative snack and beverage brands that align with modern tastes.'
She added, 'The GCC market is discerning, with a growing appetite for premium, sustainably-produced goods. UK food and drink exports to the GCC reached £817 million in 2023, with the UAE alone accounting for £420 million of that figure, demonstrating the strong and growing demand.'
Explaining the demand for UK products in the GCC, she said, 'The GCC market is characterized by a strong demand for premium food and beverages, and the UK is well-positioned to meet this demand. The UAE ranks among the top global markets for consumer spending on food and non-alcoholic beverages, with consumer spending per capita projected to reach £4,830 in 2025. Saudi Arabia is also seeing significant growth in its premium food segment, with 65% of Saudi shoppers indicating a willingness to pay more for quality products. British dairy, premium grocery items, and high-end snacks are particularly well-suited for this market. Additionally, high-end restaurants and hotels in the UAE and Saudi Arabia frequently reference the origin of their meat and fish, showcasing Scottish seafood and Welsh lamb as premium offerings.'
Sarah Mooney concluded, 'The UK's food and drink industry has a long-standing and growing presence in the GCC, driven by strong demand for premium, sustainable, and high-quality products. The region presents exciting opportunities for UK businesses, particularly in sectors such as premium grocery, dairy, seafood, and non-alcoholic beverages. Sterling heads for biggest quarterly jump in more than two years
Sterling was on track for its biggest quarterly rise against the dollar in more than two years on Monday, aided by weakness in the dollar across the board and optimism over a trade deal between the United States and Britain. Investors were also looking favourably upon British assets, as Britain was first among global economies to strike a trade deal with the United States. An agreement to lower U.S. tariffs on some industrial items from Britain also came into effect on Monday. "The UK was first out of the block in terms of getting a deal signed with the United States, although there is still going to be pockets of uncertainty to some sectors," said Susannah Streeter, senior investment and markets analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown. "Even so, it has again brought more stability in terms of the relationship that the UK has with the U.S... compared to the European Union, where there (are) still no agreements." Meanwhile, data confirmed that the British economy grew at its fastest pace in a year in the first three months of 2025, though signs of softening consumer demand could potentially weigh on the economy in the months ahead. Markets are pricing in the likelihood that the Bank of England could deliver 50 basis points worth of interest rate cuts by December, with the first expected in September, according to data compiled by LSEG. Other British assets were also poised to finish the quarter on a strong note, with domestically-exposed FTSE 250 mid-cap stocks set for their best quarterly performance since October 2020.

London shares mixed; midcaps eye best quarter in four years
London's stock indexes were mixed on Monday as a relief rally driven by easing geopolitical tensions and U.S. tariffs fizzled out, while midcaps were set for their largest quarterly gain in more than four years. Both the blue-chip FTSE 100 and the FTSE 250 were flat by 1100 GMT. Cash remains a major factor in UAE payments sector
Digital payments in the UAE increased by over 30 per cent in 2024, driven by the widespread use of e-wallets and contactless payments, according to the UAE Central Bank. However, cash remains widely used in sectors such as retail, hospitality, and transportation, where daily cash transactions are commonplace. Brink's, a leading global provider of cash and valuables management, digital retail solutions, and ATM managed services, has agreed a strategic joint venture (JV) with Meedaf, the ADGM-licensed entity launched in April 2025 to serve financial institutions across the GCC. As the first strategic partnership in the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) region on the Meedaf platform, the new joint venture with Brink's will empower financial institutions' innovation potential by harnessing Brink's global technology, infrastructure, and operational expertise to establish elevated standards in cash management and ATM managed services throughout the UAE and beyond 'Brink's solutions have evolved from traditional cash handling to include secure logistics and financial support. Our smart safes and automated deposit systems allow businesses to automate cash collection and reconciliation, lowering manual errors and operational risks. The UAE cash market is evolving alongside the digital landscape. Government initiatives, fintech innovation, and changing consumer behaviour are accelerating the move toward digital payments, yet cash continues to play an essential role across various sectors, . 'While the share of cash usage is not as high as it used to be, it remains preferred for small transactions, remittances, and daily wages, particularly among the UAE's large expatriate workforce, which makes up nearly 60 percent of the population. Industries such as retail, hospitality, transportation, and construction continue to rely on cash, and SMEs operate in hybrid models, accepting both digital and cash payments to remain inclusive. Security and efficiency remain top priorities for these businesses. Smart cash management solutions like safes, recyclers, and deposit systems that connect directly to digital accounts are seeing increased adoption,' Antar said. Future frameworks are likely to focus on ensuring both digital and cash-based systems are secure, interoperable, and efficient. In short, the volume of cash in circulation may shrink, but the complexity of managing it is growing. The future lies in smarter, secure cash handling that is digitally integrated and customized for cash intensive sectors. 'Companies that effectively integrate physical and digital solutions, as Brink's is doing, will remain central to the UAE's evolving financial landscape,' Antar said.
