He was sentenced to 12 months for killing Chan Wai-tak, 16, and three months for wounding Mr Li Man-ching, 18, on May 9, 1980. The sentences are to run concurrently. His counsel, Mr Andrew Macrae, submitted in mitigation that Chan came from a hard-working family. He was a man of good character marred with one minor offence of assault over a very trivial matter when he was only 19 […] Chan was now a hardworking and responsible young man and was no longer a member of a triad gang, he said.'

Hong Kong vice-principal reported for allegedly waving scissors at boy in hair row

A father has reported the vice-principal of a Hong Kong secondary school to police after he allegedly waved a pair of scissors at his son, who had been told to cut his hair. The 15-year-old student at Christian Alliance S C Chan Memorial College in Tuen Mun had reportedly been in a dispute with the school for some time over the length of his fringe, which school authorities said violated grooming regulations. Tensions reportedly escalated at the school's end-of-term ceremony on Monday when the vice-principal, 57, allegedly brandished a pair of scissors during a private meeting with the Form Three student and told him to cut his hair. The boy's father, 40, brought his son back to school for an explanation on Tuesday. After waiting some time without seeing the principal, the father called police to report the matter. A police spokesman said the case was currently being handled as a dispute. The school said it had launched an internal investigation and was cooperating with police and the family involved. It said it was committed to handling the case with fairness.

Hong Kong actor Jacky Heung sued by Macau casino over HK$1.4 million debt

Hong Kong actor and model Jacky Heung is being sued by a Macau casino operator for allegedly racking up at least HK$1.4 million (US$178,000) in gambling debts following a visit to the gaming hub last December. Advertisement In a writ filed with the Hong Kong District Court, MGM Grand Paradise said Heung had borrowed HK$2 million on December 1, 2024, from the operator of the MGM Macau and MGM Cotai casino hotels and converted the money into betting chips. Under the terms of the loan, Heung was required to repay it on the same day. But the company alleged that the 40-year-old actor had only paid back some of the money and still owed the casino HK$1.4 million. The contract also stated that the casino could charge an annual interest of 18 per cent on Heung's loan until the date of repayment.
