Tesla reportedly puts IT executive in charge of North American sales

-- Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) has appointed Raj Jegannathan, a senior information technology executive, in charge of its sales team as the electric vehicle maker faces declining demand, according to a Reuters report late Friday. Jegannathan, who oversees various IT and data functions at Tesla, recently assumed the sales role following the departure of Troy Jones, Tesla's former top sales executive in North America who left the company earlier this month after 15 years of service. Despite having no traditional sales experience based on his LinkedIn profile and reports from inside the company, Jegannathan has recently developed a closer relationship with CEO Elon Musk. It remains unclear whether his appointment to the sales position is temporary. The leadership change comes at a challenging time for Tesla, which has experienced a sharp drop in demand for its vehicles in Europe and North America. The company's quarterly sales fell 13% in its most recent quarter, reaching their lowest level in nearly three years. This sales decline has been attributed to several factors, including negative reaction to Musk's political statements, Tesla's aging vehicle lineup, and increased competition from rivals offering more affordable electric vehicle options. AEVA's Big LiDAR Bet: Is Mass Production Its Game Changer?

Aeva Technologies AEVA is taking a big step to get ready for the world of self-driving vehicles. The company plans to significantly increase its ability to make LiDAR sensors, which are like the "eyes" for autonomous cars and trucks. AEVA is setting up new production lines in North America that can churn out up to 200,000 of its advanced 4D LiDAR units every year. This is a huge move for the company's business plans and comes right after it strengthened its partnership with Daimler Truck North America (DTNA), a major truck ramp-up in production fits perfectly with Aeva's role as the sole provider of their special 4D LiDAR sensors for Torc Robotics, which is Daimler's self-driving trucking division. In fact, the very first Freightliner Cascadia trucks, equipped with AEVA's technology, are already operating on roads in Texas. With extra money coming in from DTNA, this increased production really highlights the growing trust in AEVA's ability to supply high-resolution, long-range sensors crucial for autonomous 200,000 units a year isn't just about big numbers; it shows Aeva Technologies is ready to supply many different car and truck makers, not just Daimler. With this large-scale production expected to start in late 2026 and continue into 2027, AEVA isn't just boosting its manufacturing power. It's also showing a clear intention to be a leader in the race to make self-driving technology a common reality. For a company still relatively new to mass production, this accelerated push could truly define AEVA's next big chapter in the high-volume world of automotive LiDAR. LiDAR Scaling by Peers Luminar Technologies LAZR has largely focused on cars, landing big deals with Volvo and Mercedes-Benz. The company's factory in Mexico is aimed at mass production and cost savings. Luminar's choice to build its own components helps with high-volume production. Luminar's Iris sensor delivers impressive range and resolution, and it estimates object motion through software analysis across Technologies INVZ, meanwhile, is focusing on big-name partners like BMW and Volkswagen's software arm, Cariad, to fuel its growth in self-driving tech. Innoviz aims to provide a complete LiDAR solution, including perception software, and is building factories to produce units on a mass scale. Innoviz's sensors offer excellent detail and are compact. Morgan Stanley unpacks Tesla's edge: culture, talent, and strategy

-- Tesla's competitive edge lies not only in its products but in a cultural, strategic, and technological alignment that legacy automakers struggle to replicate, according to Morgan Stanley analysts. In a wide-ranging note released on Friday, the bank stated that Tesla's dual role as both a carmaker and a tech company affords it unique advantages, particularly as cars evolve into 'AI-driven robots.' 'The recent amping up of the AI/robotics talent war is a key reason why we expect Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) to host an 'AI Day' in the not-too-distant future,' said Morgan Stanley. The event, they argue, would serve as a powerful recruitment tool amid escalating competition for top engineering talent. The analysts also praised Tesla's minimalist approach to autonomy. While rivals embrace sensor fusion with radar and LiDAR, Tesla is 'doubling down' on a camera-only system. 'Annoyingly… Elon is right,' said a vision expert at a rival autonomous vehicle firm, quoted in the note. Morgan Stanley drew an analogy to two 'Baby Tarzans,' one over-equipped, the other given nothing, to argue that Tesla's stripped-down sensorial approach could yield faster learning and long-term superiority. The bank also questioned the potential impact of growing government involvement in strategic industries. While noting the U.S. Department of Defense's investment in rare earth producer MP Materials, Morgan Stanley asked whether further direct state ownership in strategic sectors could 'unintentionally stifle homegrown organic competition.' Ultimately, the analysts argue Tesla's 'sensorial parsimony,' talent strategy, and long-term autonomy vision are underappreciated by investors, and remain key to the company's potential lead in the robotaxi and humanoid markets.
