Two heritage buildings to be restored; plans afoot for maritime museum at Chennai port
The department has invited bids for carrying out the two projects to restore the buildings back to their original shape.
The stately red brick building with stone pillars on the facade houses the Oriental Research Institute in the Marina campus of Madras University. Built in 1935 as the University Examination Hall, the two-storey building is now used as offices and departments of classical and vernacular languages. Officials of the PWD noted that 50% of the building, which is a combination of red bricks, stone and reinforced concrete, has suffered damage over the decades. The steel columns covered in brick work have corroded.
Citing the Justice E.Padmanabhan Committee report, the officials said spread over 27,881 sq.ft., the structure is modern in composition and has reinforced cement concrete on its roof.
The Rs.19 crore work would include replacing cracked stone pillars with eight new stone column pillars and reconstruction of brick and stone masonry walls, said S.Alwin Gnansehar, superintending engineer, BCCD, PWD.
The 104-year old Hydraulic Powerhouse structure also called as 'Stone Building' at Chennai Port area is up for renovation after many years. Officials said the pre-independence era structure, which is spread over nearly 5,974 sq.ft., is now being used as an electricity substation. The rectangular building with a provision for chimney too has suffered 50% of damage particularly Madras Terrace roof. The plastering in the interior walls has peeled off and wooden doors and windows have to be replaced.
The Chennai Port Authority has entrusted ₹5.25 crore to PWD to execute the restoration project. Once the heritage structure is restored, the Chennai Port Authority plans to establish a maritime museum to boost tourism.
Sunil Paliwal, Chairperson, Chennai Port Authority, said it was one of the oldest buildings in the Chennai port. There are plans to set up a maritime museum showcasing maritime heritage dating back to Cholas and Pallavas era. This would add to the monuments, including old two-tonne anchor and other attractions like the port signal station, which witnesses a stream of visitors, including students.
With the Cordelia cruises planning to extend its operations to entire year instead of current four-month schedule in Chennai port, passengers would also be taken a tour to museum. The PWD will also soon take up restoration of the old Harbour station at a cost of ₹4.9 crore, Mr.Paliwal said.

Guest teachers face uncertainty amid new appointments in state
Patna: Recent appointment of assistant professors across various disciplines—based on recommendations from the Bihar State University Service Commission (BSUSC)—has left hundreds of long-serving guest teachers in universities and colleges across the state in an uncertain position. Services of many of these teachers, who have been teaching for the last six to eight years, have not been renewed citing lack of vacancies. Currently, guest faculty members across Bihar's universities are paid an honorarium of Rs1,500 per class, capped at Rs 50,000 per month. This payment is made for only 11 months each year, with a mandatory one-month break before renewal—resulting in the loss of one month's pay. Additionally, they receive no compensation during summer vacations, further exacerbating their financial instability. A few months ago, the Bihar Legislative Council's education committee, led by MLC Ram Bachan Roy, recommended that guest faculty members—whose qualifications match those of regular teachers, who were appointed following the reservation roster, and who have served for five to six years—should be allowed to continue teaching until the age of 65, similar to regular faculty. Echoing this sentiment, Kanhaiya Bahadur Sinha, working president of the federation of university teachers' associations of Bihar (FUTAB), and general secretary Sanjay Kumar Singh, MLC, have urged the chancellor and the state govt to regularise the services of these long-serving guest faculty members. Concreting bow-string steel bridge surface begins at Indrali in Udupi
Concreting the surface of Railway Over Bridge (RoB) atop Mangaluru-Mumbai Railway line on Malpe-Tirthahalli National Highway 169 at Indrali in Udupi began on Sunday, in the presence of MP for Udupi-Chikkamagaluru, Kota Srinivas Poojary. The National Highways Division of the Karnataka Public Works Department (NH-PWD) had completed the erection of the bow-string steel bridge on May 13. Subsequent heavy rains, however, did not allow the department to concrete the surface of the bridge. With rains abating for a week on the coast, the NH-PWD commenced the concreting work. Mr. Poojary told reporters that the concreting work might get completed in about 10 days if it does not rain heavily. About 25 more days are required for curing the laid concrete. If everything goes well, the additional RoB should open for traffic by the end of the month, the MP said. NH-PWD Assistant Executive Engineer Manjunath Naik and others accompanied the MP. The commissioning of the additional RoB would eliminate the bottleneck on the four-lane highway between Udupi and Manipal on NH 169A, which experiences heavy traffic. Time and again, the public had voiced their anguish over the delay in the completion of the RoB, because of which many accidents had happened and lives were lost. Started in 2018 Work on the Indrali additional RoB commenced in 2018 when a part of NH 169A between Udupi and Manipal was expanded to four lanes. The work moved at a snail's pace due to changes in design, bureaucratic delays and other issues, testing the patience of people. As vehicles had to change lanes from the four-lane highway and move on the two-lane existing RoB, many accidents were reported on the stretch, prompting the district administration to threaten criminal action against the departments and the contractor concerned. The then MP for Udupi-Chikkamagaluru, Shobha Karandlaje, and the incumbent Mr. Poojary visited the site several times to follow up with officials in a bid to speed up the project. The total project cost was pegged at ₹9 crore when it was launched.

Stairway Collapses In Ghaziabad Complex, Firefighters Rescue Those Trapped
Ghaziabad: Some people living in a residential complex in Ghaziabad were trapped inside their homes after a flight of stairs in a building collapsed and hung precariously, cutting off their exit. Eventually, firefighters rescued those trapped, including a dog, from the higher floors. Around 4.30 am today, a whole flight of stairs in one of the buildings of Green View Apartment in Vasundhara Sector 17 gave way. The flight of stairs collapsed from one end and hung dangerously. Fortunately, no one was using the stairs when it came off in the early hours. Visuals showed firefighters using ladders to rescue those trapped on the higher floors after the stairway collapsed. These buildings are four-storey residential structures that do not have a lift. Built about two decades back, flats in Green View Apartments cost nearly Rs 1 crore. Following the stairway collapse, which could have led to a big tragedy, some residents blamed poor construction and negligence in maintaining the buildings. Following the incident, reconstruction of the stairway has begun. The residential complex was built under the Uttar Pradesh government's Awas Vikas Yojana. Rahul Pal, Chief Fire Officer, Ghaziabad, said a disaster response team rescued two people and a dog stuck in one of the flats, cut off due to the stairway collapse. "Everyone has been evacuated, there are no casualties," he confirmed.
