Chelsea fan discontent 'not just about patchy form'

BBC News11-03-2025
On the latest episode of BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club, The Athletic's Rory Smith discussed the frustration currently present among Chelsea's fan base."Part of it must be to do with deflation - it's only been two and a half months since they thought they were title contenders," said Smith."There is also a lot of simmering discontent around the way the club is being run. I'm not sure they trust the owners and there is scepticism about the model."It's not surprising to me that now they have hit a bumpy patch, it has laid bare quite a lot of dissatisfaction. It's not just about patchy form, it is deeper-running than that."Watch the full episode on BBC iPlayer or listen on BBC Sounds

Raheem Sterling 'eyed by THREE Premier League clubs' after exiled Chelsea star was handed brutal snubbing as Enzo Maresca moves on

Raheem Sterling is believed to have caught the interest of three Premier League sides, with the forward all but guaranteed to make the move away from Chelsea after being frozen out by head coach Enzo Maresca. The former Manchester City star joined the Blues in the summer of 2022 after inking a £47.5million deal to move to the capital. But Sterling has struggled for form in recent seasons, finding himself on the periphery of the plans of both Mauricio Pochettino and Maresca, with the player spending last season on loan with crosstown rivals Arsenal. Despite his pursuit of a fresh start, the winger found it equally challenging to break in to Mikel Arteta 's side, scoring just one goal in his 27 appearances. Sterling is believed to have been informed by Maresca that he will not feature for the Club World Cup winners this term, and does not even have a profile or photo in the first-team section of the website. However, the 30-year-old is not without transfer options, with outlets reporting that a number of division rivals could yet battle to secure his services. Chelsea's next-door neighbours Fulham are thought to be keeping an eye on the player, along with south London side Crystal Palace, as per talkSPORT. Sterling could also see a reunion with a former Chelsea manager, with Graham Potter's West Ham believed to be rounding out the group of clubs interested in the ex-Liverpool man. The player is thought to be keen to stay in London, where he has relocated with his young family, which could make signing for any of his three potential suitors an option. Mail Sport reported last month that Sterling had been offered up to Serie A champions Napoli, but those wishes would suggest Premier League offers will be considered more seriously by the star. But Sterling's sky-high wages are believed to represent a stumbling block in the face of a move away from Stamford Bridge, with the England international reportedly earning a staggering £325,000 per week. Sterling is one of nine players that Maresca has banished from the first team, including Ben Chilwell, Alfie Gilchrist, Axel Disasi, Carney Chukwuemeka, Renato Veiga and David Datro Fofana. Midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is on the cusp of following in the footsteps of outgoing players such as Joao Felix, Armando Broja, and Lesley Ugochukwu and inking a move away, with the former Leicester star departing for Everton after just one season in west London. But Chelsea will look to secure even more player exits before the transfer window closes at the end of the month after drafting in a raft of new recruits. The Blues have signed a number of big-name forwards including Jamie Gittens, Liam Delap, and Joao Pedro, pushing Sterling's name further out of the frame.

England star decides 'preferred option' amid Liverpool and Newcastle interest

Marc Guehi has reportedly picked out Liverpool as his favoured option should he depart Selhurst Park, but Crystal Palace are still yet to receive any formal offers for the defender this summer. The 25-year-old has established himself as one of the most highly regarded and sought-after centre-backs in Premier League football since leaving boyhood team Chelsea for Palace back in 2021. A string of assured performances at Euro 2024 only enhanced Guehi's reputation and the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Newcastle and Liverpool all expressed an interest in signing the England international following last summer's tournament. Newcastle, in particular, pushed hard to get a deal over the line right up until the deadline, but saw several bids rejected for Guehi, who was subsequently named Palace's club captain ahead of the 2024/25 season. However, Guehi's future has once again been the subject of intense speculation in recent weeks and the Magpies remain in the hunt for the Chelsea academy product, with Eddie Howe keen for defensive reinforcements at St James' Park. According The Guardian's Ed Aarons, Guehi would be 'happy' to stay put at Palace to see out remainder of his contract, which is due to expire in June 2026. But Liverpool are said to be Guehi's 'preferred option' and the centre-half would jump at the chance to join the Premier League champions should the opportunity arise. While Palace have not yet been tempted with any bids for Guehi, the club could be prepared to do business should they receive an offer in the region of £40million. Guehi has made 155 appearances in all competitions across his four years at Selhurst Park and last season wrote himself into Palace history as he captained the club to FA Cup glory at Wembley. Prior to Palace's famous victory over Manchester City, Guehi refused to provide any assurances over his future with the Eagles. 'I think the most important thing is just always doing the best that I can for this football club. I come in every day and I try to be the same,' he said. 'I try to work hard. And you know, this football club has given me a lot. I'm still under contract at this football club, so my focus is always at this football club. 'So, you know, for me, the most important is just doing the best I can and seeing where the future holds.' Speaking to talkSPORT in June, Jermaine Pennant tipped Guehi to replace Ibrahima Konate at Anfield, with the latter rumoured to be attracting strong interest from Real Madrid. 'If Liverpool are in for Marc Guehi, that signals to me that Konate is more on the side of leaving,' the former Liverpool winger said. 'I'm thinking, is this a situation like Real Madrid and Trent Alexander-Arnold, where Liverpool are saying to Guehi, 'Just see your contract out and we will look after you'? 'Because Konate is in the same situation, he's in the last year of his contract and they haven't agreed a deal. 'So Liverpool might be saying to him, 'Look, Konate's going to go at the end of this season, Marc Guehi, you see out your contract and come, join us for a free and we're prepared to offer you this'. 'I could see that happening.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
