Former Selby councillor killed on stretch of road he had long campaigned to make safer

Tributes have been paid to a former councillor and trade unionist who's died in a road accident near Selby - in an area he'd long campaigned to make safer. 81-year-old John Duggan was killed when his car collided with a skip lorry as he was joining the A19 from York Road at Riccall on 1st August. Mr Duggan, a former Selby district and North Yorkshire county councillor was taken to hospital by air ambulance with serious injuries but was pronounced dead a short time later. He'd campaigned for many years for safety improvements on that stretch of the road. The labour leader of North Yorkshire council, councillor Steve Shaw-Wright had served with Mr Duggan on Selby district council. "He campaigned for the roundabout to get access and ingress from Riccall for a long, long time, it's tragically ironic that that was the place where he lost his life. "John was one who would campaign for what he believed to be right for his community, whether that was within the bounds of his political group or outside, John was very determined to support what people needed in his community." Councillor Stephanie Duckett described her former colleague as being 'larger than life'. "Once you met John, you didn't forget him. He really loved Riccall and worked very, very hard to get everything he could for the village. He was also a private family man whop doted on his wife and family. He was loved and will be missed by a lot of people". Police are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage following the fatal collision which occurred at around 10.30am. Mr Duggan's black Nissan Juke collided with a white DAF skip lorry. The driver, a 42-year-old man from York, was arrested at the scene and is assisting officers with their enquiries. The road was closed for several hours to allow officers to investigate the scene, and the vehicles involved to be safely recovered.
