Brit left with serious burns after sunbathing with jewellery

A British man has warned never to sunbathe with jewellery on after suffering second-degree burns when his necklace turned the sun's rays into a 'laser beam' that scorched his neck.
Ben Parsons was on holiday with his family in the South of France when he fell asleep on a beach for six hours after applying just one layer of factor 30 suncream.
The 27-year-old says he woke up several times throughout the mammoth nap but didn't realise how strong the sun was because the wind was keeping him cool.

It was only when he left the beach to return to his family's villa that he realised he was 'in trouble' as his whole body was covered in a painful, bright red burn.
British man's holiday 'ruined' by jewellery sunburn
The worst of the burns were from where the gold necklace he was wearing had 'reflected the sun like a laser beam'. (Image: Kennedy News & Media) The worst of the burns were from where the gold necklace he was wearing had 'reflected the sun like a laser beam' - causing pus-filled blisters to erupt from his chin down to the base of his neck.
Ben was left bedbound for five days due to the severity of the burns, which were so painful that he says it felt like his skin was ripping or stretching every time he moved.
He says the ordeal 'ruined' his holiday as he was unable to go outside and enjoy the sunshine.
The sales executive is now warning sunseekers to regularly apply SPF and take their jewellery off when sunbathing.
Ben said: "I was lying down and the necklace was on my chest, pointing up at my neck.
"It was like the necklace had reflected and magnified the sun into a laser beam and it's been sizzling there."Once I got up from the beach, I was in pain and that was when I realised I'd definitely [been] burnt."But then once I got back to my house, which was another hour from the beach, that's when I realised that I was in a bit of trouble."It got progressively worse for the next two days to the point where I was bedbound."I couldn't move without being in pain because I was so burned that every time I moved, it felt as if my skin was ripping or stretching."I didn't leave my bed for the next four or five days because I was in such excruciating pain.
"I didn't end up going back to the beach for the rest of the holiday and I had to stay laying down in bed."It definitely ruined my holiday because I didn't get to see sunlight again for the next week and a half, and then even getting up for dinner and lunches was painful."Even having my eyelids open hurt."Luckily, a family member on holiday with them was a nurse, so they got a cream to treat the burns, and wrapped bandages around his neck to protect his scorched skin.

Now, Ben is encouraging other people to apply SPF and take their jewellery off when sunbathing to avoid the same fate.
Ben said: "I would definitely say always be extra careful when wearing jewellery because whether it's real gold or not, it can potentially reflect off onto you.
"I definitely recommend taking all jewellery off so this sort of thing doesn't happen.
"Also, apply suncream regularly so you don't end up ruining your holiday and all of the money you spent to get there."

This NYC airport has the best lounge for foodies, says new ranking

Calling all travelers who judge an airport not by its TSA lines but by its truffle toast: New York's JFK just scored big in a new roundup of the world's best airport lounges for food lovers. According to the latest list from Jesse Neugarten of Dollar Flight Club, the Chelsea Lounge, a joint venture by American Airlines and British Airways in Terminal 8, ranks among the globe's top seven lounges for gourmet dining. And we're not talking sad buffet spreads. The Chelsea Lounge's à la carte menu is a true pre-flight indulgence, featuring seasonal dishes crafted by chefs tied to the James Beard Foundation like chilled English pea soup, curry sweet potato bisque and roasted salmon alongside British nods like afternoon tea and New York-style toffee cheesecake. Not bad for something you can order in airport socks. At the center of it all is a circular Champagne bar that's basically a travel influencer's dream. Premium pours from the likes of Moët, Roederer and Krug 170ème Édition (which retails for $200-plus) flow freely, backed by a full roster of wines, whiskeys and cocktails. Access to the Chelsea Lounge is, unsurprisingly, exclusive. Entry is reserved for Flagship First and Flagship Business Plus passengers on American, or First Class travelers on British Airways long-haul flights. Certain elite loyalty members like ConciergeKey and BA Club Gold also get through the velvet rope. What makes the lounge even more appealing (beyond the champers)? Its ambiance. Travelers can dine fireside with table service, creating a restaurant-like experience that feels miles from terminal chaos. And with JFK's Terminal 8 upgrades complete, the space itself is a sleek, art-filled retreat. Rounding out the ranking were lounges at CDG (Air France's Michelin-starred La Première Lounge took top honors), Istanbul, Dubai and LAX. But for New York-based globetrotters with a taste for the finer things, Chelsea Lounge is the city's high-flying culinary heavyweight.

5 of the best climbing plants to transform your garden including fragrant flower that blooms for six months of the year

WANT to add a dash of colour into your garden but aren't sure where to begin? Climbing plants are a great option if you're low on space and want to maximise the plants you can have. 2 2 Speaking to Good Housekeeping, gold-winning Chelsea Flower Show designer Joe Carey, who co-designs with his wife, Laura at Carey Garden Design Studio shared five of the best climbing plants to add to your space. Common Honeysuckle A great choice if you want something relatively low-maintenance that can also survive the grey skies of a British summer? The gardening whizz recommended honeysuckle for the best of both worlds. He explained: "As a UK native, common honeysuckle is really well suited to UK gardens, and we love it; it has such a wonderful scent." Climbing Hydrangeas For more shady gardens, climbing hydrangeas are a great pick. According to Joe, they're both gorgeous during the summer months when they flower, but the seed heads also look great in autumn. Although it might not be the best choice for chalky soil, it will thrive in a spot with plenty of space to grow, he added. Clematis Perfect for sunny spots which are usually overbearing for plants, varieties of clematis can weather it all. He added that his favourites include clematis ' Frances Rivis ' and clematis cirrhosa var. balearica, - but of course there are plenty of options out there. Not only that, but some clematis, like the 'Sugar Sweet' hybrids and 'montana' types, can start blooming as early as March and continue into November, meaning you can enjoy them much longer than other blooms. Kids will have hours of fun in the garden with The Range's bargain buy - it also lights up, plays music & is on sale Climbing roses On the hunt for something more traditional, look no further. Joe said his personal favourites are the Rosa 'Wedding Day' type: "I prefer the single flowers because they look more like our native roses and bees can access the pollen more easily." However, for larger spaces, a 'rambling' variety might be the best pick. Star Jasmine And if you want some more greenery in your garden, Star Jasmine could be just what you're looking for. Not only does it have evergreen foliage, but when it does bloom the scent is stunning too, the pro explained. Simply pop them in a sunny spot and they'll grow fast and thrive.

Tommy Freeman reveals his Lions dream has proved costly after pledge to parents

Freeman returns to the setting of his England debut in 2022 at Suncorp Stadium when he starts Saturday's first Test against Australia on the right wing. It was during that tour he pledged to fly his mum and dad – Sara and Cliff – Down Under in business class if he were to return with the elite of British and Irish rugby. Our line up for Saturday's first Test! 👊🦁#Lions2025 — British & Irish Lions (@lionsofficial) July 17, 2025 'My parents came to Australia in 2022. It was very last minute because I didn't think I was going to play out here, so I told them not to come,' Freeman said. 'I eventually got selected and then they flew out. It was last minute so I told them that if I get picked for the Lions I would pay for their business class seats, which has backfired!' Freeman believes his selection against the Wallabies has provided his parents with a welcome lift following an accident which happened while following the Lions around Australia. 'I gave them a ring and they are having troubles of their own. Mum has just broken her foot so she has had surgery in Adelaide,' he said. 'They were travelling from Canberra to Adelaide and thought they would drive it so they pulled over and got some photos…. 'It has not gone well on that front so a bit of good news for them was good. Mum's main concern was being fit enough to fly to get here in time. 'They were obviously delighted and all the travelling miles they have put in for me has paid off. 'It's amazing to be able to give back because I am not that pleasant to be around on game day with the nerves. I can be a bit grumpy, so for it all to pay off with moments like this is extra special.' Freeman ran in 15 tries in 12 matches coming into the Lions tour and has fulfilled expectations by nailing down a Test spot with his roaming threat and ability in the air winning the approval of head coach Andy Farrell. 'It's not like the olden days when you have speed on the wings and you just kind of stay on your wing,' said the 24-year-old, who also covers outside centre. 'I want to find the ball as much as possible and playing in the midfield has helped with finding cues where I can pop up in spaces. I want to have an impact.'
