Energy dips, gray hairs and hope: What 36 looks like now
A study recently published in the Annals of Medicine adds some scientific evidence to back up those feelings. According to the 30-year study, which assessed both physical and mental health, age 36 is when many of the choices we made as younger people begin showing up in our bodies and minds. People who smoke or drink heavily, eat poorly or put off exercise often begin seeing significant health repercussions by the time they hit 36. Essentially, age 36 is a turning point for the process of aging.
This news made us think about what it really means to be 36 — both physically and emotionally — and how 36-year-olds think about themselves at this stage of life. (And, OK, what face cream are they using?) Here's what seven women told us.
Around the ages of 33 to 35, I became aware of changes to my body and face. I started noticing new lines on my face. Then a couple of months ago, I woke up one morning, and my arms just felt different. You hear people talk about losing muscle mass as you approach 40, and I have not been consistent about getting movement in. I do take long walks, and I'm now trying to be more consistent with lifting weights.
In terms of other self-care stuff, I dry brush my body, apply facial oil and do gua sha. Sunscreen is a must, and I'm seeking out clean brands and swapping products accordingly. I apply retinol to my face, neck and backs of my hands about one to two times a week. I also journal and am incorporating more meditation. I don't plan to get Botox, so I actively avoid smoking, drinking, tanning and any other vices that I hear contribute to aging.
I'm grateful for the freedom my journey to 36 has brought. I'm self-employed, divorced and on the brink of a dream move abroad. I'm not a mother, but I'm a proud auntie. Sometimes, I feel old and like so much life has passed. Other times, I feel like my life is only just beginning.
The age when I saw the most physical changes to my body was 34, right after I had my daughter. My body changed, and silver strands appeared in my hair. Now at 36, I have extra weight around my midsection, but I'm trying to give myself grace while also focusing on strength training. Professionally, I run my own podcast, and entrepreneur-and-toddler life is a workout all its own.
As for other ways I take care of myself, for the last 20 years I've sworn by the Clinique 3-step skin care system: cleanser, clarifying lotion and Dramatically Different moisturizer, morning and night. I don't smoke or tan, and I only drink on special occasions, usually a single glass of wine or champagne when celebrating.
Looking back at photos from my 20s shows me just how drastically my other priorities in life have shifted. Being 36 means motherhood first and work second. It means I'm building a life that fits my family, not squeezing my family into my life around my work.
As a longtime wellness enthusiast and former beauty editor, my self-care and beauty routines were very involved. More recently, they've become more intentional and health-conscious. As a new mom, self-care feels like taking the time to get a thorough massage after a few intense workouts, strength training so I can feel stronger, getting a professional blowout and investing in biweekly mani-pedis. It also looks like eating nourishing meals coupled with supplements to make sure I'm giving my body what it needs.
My beauty routine has shifted to double-cleansing my face, especially on days when I wear a face full of makeup. I also consistently exfoliate and rotate serums and eye creams for firming and brightness. I also always moisturize and use sunscreen.
In terms of cosmetic treatments, I got a little under-eye filler a few years back to treat under-eye bags—but it may be time for a refill. Thirty-six is definitely the age when I've noticed the most change. I'm starting to see changes in my face — it's not as firm and tight — and I'm the heaviest I've ever been. My hair has also grown its longest but sheds more than ever before. These things don't necessarily bother me, but I've noticed them all the most at 36.
For me, being well-fed and rested are the secrets to youthfulness. I tend to be obsessive about getting at least eight hours of sleep. Likewise, if I don't eat 'clean' I can absolutely feel the reverberations of that soon after. It's no longer worth it to me to feel bad in ways that I can control.
That said, I still drink some alcohol. I wish I could give up my wine on the weekends for the sake of my health, but I'm not emotionally ready for that yet.
My early 30s were the most dramatic shift in my physical appearance. It was like pressing a button, and my metabolism shut down. I now have to work very hard to stay fit, but on the flip side, if I work too hard, it's counterproductive to my body and produces a lot of stress.
Thirty-six feels like a big change physically too because I had a baby (unexpected C-section) at 35-and- a-half, and just about everything is now different physically. Since then, my hair has grayed significantly, every bit of my torso has morphed and my energy levels are currently nonexistent. But as I step into my late 30s, I feel newly invigorated to grasp on to youthfulness. Not in a desperate or aesthetic way, but rather to find the energy to keep doing all the things I love.
Thirty-six is a transformative year. For many of us, careers are more stable, we've got a kid or two — in my case, two little ones — and we're starting to think about what the next 36 years should look like. Social media makes aging feel like something to fight, not embrace. It pushes this idea that you have to do everything to avoid looking your age, and most of it is fake and insanely expensive.
My self-care routine is pretty simple. I don't do fancy facials or regular nail appointments, and my go-to moisturizer is an $8 tube of Vanicream (holy grail status). I started Botox at 26 — just 15 units in my forehead and crow's feet, maybe once or twice a year if I'm lucky. I never skip washing my face at night, and I slather on a Korean skin care product before bed, especially on my neck.
I'll also admit to the occasional spray tan. In my teens, though, I spent way too many hours in tanning beds, especially during visits to my grandma in Florida. If the sun wasn't out, she'd take us to the tanning salon so we'd come home glowing.
Looking toward the future, I've thought about plastic surgery but not for another eight to 10 years. I believe small tweaks can help slow the aging process. A full facelift isn't for me, but a few minor procedures might be on the table as I get closer to 50.
My mother and I were mistaken for sisters until I was about 25. Both my parents look far younger than their ages, and people have commented on that for years. I never thought much of that until I enjoyed receiving the same compliment. When I tell people I was born in 1988, they have genuine disbelief in their faces.
I have made my mistakes, however. In 2017, when the social media influencer was at its peak of power, I was convinced to start getting Botox in my forehead and 11s, and Juvéderm filler in my lips. I stopped getting the injections about two years ago simply because I wanted to go a more nontoxic route.
In my 20s I'd fall for every skin care trend and was weirdly proud of how many 'steps' my routine 'required.' A few years ago, a company reached out to me and paid me to review one of their skin care products. The product contained a topical steroid and caused me to break out in a horrific case of perioral dermatitis. I had to stop using literally everything … I couldn't even wear makeup for several months. After ruining my skin barrier, I started rebuilding my routine, which now consists of sensitive skin Dove bar soap (an oldie but a goodie) and the Amperna Soothing Duo. My confidence tanked when I had those breakouts, and I'd do anything not to feel so hopeless again.
Years 33 to 36 have brought on the most changes physically for me. My body takes longer to recover from workouts and alcohol consumption (I now feel the effects of two drinks the next day), and I need more sleep in general.
Since turning 36, I've become more conscious of how the choices I make will impact my future. I want to keep my mind sharp and my body physically active. My husband and I are considering starting a family in the next year, so I think a lot about what my body will need to carry a baby, my body/mental health postpartum and how to keep up with a toddler when I'm in my 40s.
Right now, I work out three to four times per week, eat well and take a variety of daily supplements. I drink about three times per week and use a nicotine vape daily.
The one vanity piece that bothers me is my gray hair. My dad was almost completely gray by 40, and I definitely got his genes. One day I will proudly rock it, but I'm not ready to yet.

'It's from shaking hands with thousands of people,' he said. In February, speculation over Trump's discolored hand re-emerged when it was noticed during a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. Dr. Neal H. Patel, a doctor at Providence St Joseph Hospital, told the Daily Mail earlier this year that shaking hands is unlikely to have caused the damage. 'I see a lot of patients who are businessmen, and I've never really seen them getting bruising from too much handshaking,' he said. 'I guess it's possible, but that would really not be on my list of ideas of what causes it.' Patel suggested it could be a bruise from the use of an IV needle. Other doctors have said Trump's age may be a factor, especially if he is also suffering from osteoporosis. Right-wing columnist Miranda Devine addressed the bruising last month. 'He will endure constant bruises on the back of his hands from well-wishers showing their gratitude with vigorous handshakes that he reciprocates warmly, even though he's a renowned (maybe reformed) germaphobe,' she wrote. In April, the White House released the president's health report, which claimed he had no major issues, stating he had a normal health function and 'blood flow to his extremities is unimpaired.' That same month, the bruise showed up again when Trump held a football at a Commander-in-Chief Trophy ceremony in Washington, D.C. It also stated his joints and muscles had 'no swelling,' and while his skin had some 'minor sun damage,' no 'concerning lesions or growths' were present.

Sugar, sex and your health: The connection you might be ignoring
Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt is a urologist and robotic surgeon with Orlando Health and an assistant professor at the University of Central Florida's College of Medicine. When most of us think about sugar, I bet we're not thinking about our sex lives. We're thinking about dessert. I'm writing this with the help of a bowl of vanilla ice cream by my side. Sugar makes us feel good in the moment, but over time, too much of it may cause us to lose out on some of life's most intimate moments. In 2025, everyone's been buzzing about GLP-1 injections to help control sugar and lose weight. This new class of medication has helped many achieve meaningful health gains — including improved blood sugar, weight loss — and even improvements to people's sex lives (because they could be getting better sleep, too). My goal here isn't to discount the use of GLP-1 drugs or suggest people are taking them unnecessarily (although some people may be). My intent is to spark a broader conversation: What if we also paid more attention to the root cause: our love for sugar and its downstream effects on mood, metabolism, sex and more? Is your blood sugar normal? Most people associate blood sugar with diabetes, but few know what is 'normal.' Blood sugar levels can be checked in real time with a simple finger stick, via home glucose monitor or through wearable devices such as continuous glucose monitors (those coin-size devices you may see on people's upper arms), which provide feedback on glucose levels throughout the day. What do we see when this test is done? Following is the American Diabetes Association range of reference for blood glucose levels, but they are not meant for you to diagnose yourself with diabetes. In many instances, your provider may double- or even triple-check these numbers before labeling you with 'diabetes.' All numbers should be evaluated by your health care provider. Fasting blood sugar (no food for at least eight hours prior): Normal: below 100 mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter) Prediabetes: 100 to 125 mg/dL Diabetes: 126 mg/dL or higher Random blood sugar (taken any time of day): Diabetes is often diagnosed if levels are 200 mg/dL or higher with symptoms. The point-of-care glucose test gives a snapshot, but there's one lab that tells the full story — the hemoglobin A1c. What is hemoglobin A1c, and why does it matter? This blood test measures the percentage of hemoglobin proteins in your blood that have glucose attached to it — giving you and your health care providers a picture of your average blood sugar over the past two to three months. This makes it a reliable indicator of how well your body manages glucose over time. Here's how the American Diabetes Association breaks it down: Normal: A1c below 5.7% Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4% Diabetes: 6.5% or higher In my work as a surgeon, checking A1c before any procedure — especially those involving implants — is standard practice. Elevated A1c levels are strongly linked to poor recovery, infection risks and surgical complications. So, whether it's a major urologic procedure or something else, keeping your glucose in check matters more than most people realize. What high blood sugar does to your sex life Sexual health is rarely the first thing people associate with blood sugar, but chronically high glucose levels can have an impact on intimacy — for everyone. In men, high blood sugar can damage the nerves and blood vessels essential for achieving and maintaining erections. Over time, this can present as erectile dysfunction, before a man is ever diagnosed with or thought to be at risk for diabetes. High blood sugar can also lower testosterone levels, which then reduce libido and energy. Many of my patients who do not get routine screenings from their primary care providers come to see me because of changes in sexual performance — only to later discover their blood sugar is out of control. For these patients, their first clue that something was wrong wasn't thirst, weight changes or fatigue (the more common early signs of diabetes) — it was trouble in the bedroom. In women, high blood sugar can lead to reduced blood flow and hormone imbalances, which may cause vaginal dryness, painful sex or problems with orgasm. It can also increase the risk of recurrent urinary tract infections, which can make intimacy painful or less appealing. Many women can feel frustrated and confused about whether these changes are expected from aging, post-menopause, stress or something else. A poor sugar level is usually the last thing on their mind. How high blood sugar is treated Diabetes is incredibly common — about 38 million Americans have it — and nearly 1 in 4 don't even know it, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Traditionally, diabetes treatment started with oral medications like metformin, which helps lower glucose by reducing sugar production in the liver. Other classes of pills work in different ways, either by increasing insulin release or helping the kidneys flush out excess sugar. These medications are typically prescribed for people in the earlier stages of diabetes or with mildly elevated A1c. Injectable medications may be necessary when oral pills aren't enough to treat the disease. For years, that often meant daily insulin injections, which many patients found to be burdensome but necessary. Insulin needs to be carefully timed with meals, and dosing can be tricky. There's also a real fear of low blood sugar episodes, which can make some people hesitant to start or stick with the therapy. Over the past few years, GLP-1 receptor agonist drugs have become part of many people's treatment regimens. This class of medication is known by names like semaglutide, liraglutide and tirzepatide. These injections mimic a natural hormone in your body that helps regulate blood sugar, slows down digestion and make you feel fuller faster. While they were originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes, they've gained worldwide attention for helping people lose weight. In fact, many patients now ask and get these medications before any other option — not just to manage blood sugar, but to lose weight. Better control over sugar can improve testosterone These medications also may help normalize testosterone levels in men with obesity or type 2 diabetes, according to preliminary research presented at the Endocrine Society's annual meeting this week. Researchers tracked 110 men who were prescribed GLP-1 injections but were not taking any testosterone therapy. Over the course of 18 months, as participants lost on average about 10% of their body weight, the number of men with normal testosterone levels increased from 53% to 77%. This rise highlights how medications originally designed for diabetes and weight loss also may improve hormone levels in men. While this abstract has not yet been peer-reviewed and more research is needed, these findings add to a growing body of evidence that managing weight and blood sugar can have ripple effects across nearly every aspect of health — including testosterone, energy and sexual function. Try this harder alternative first Before turning immediately to medications, don't underestimate what consistent lifestyle changes can do, not just for your blood sugar but for your whole life. Regular exercise improves insulin sensitivity, supports weight loss, boosts energy and even enhances sexual function by improving blood flow and hormone balance. A balanced diet — one that's rich in whole foods, fiber and lean protein — can stabilize blood sugar and reduce inflammation that contributes to chronic disease. Better sleep, reduced alcohol and managing stress all play a role, too. So, if you're debating between an injection or a new routine, maybe this time reach for the gym bag before you try anything else. You might just find it changes more than your labs. It might change how you feel about yourself. As for me, the next time I help myself to that scoop of ice cream while writing, I'll remember that it's not just about my waistline — it's about my energy, my heart and my sexual health. Mpox vaccines rolled out in SA amid increase in cases
Around 10 500 mpox vaccines will be rolled out, the Department of Health has said. The vaccines have been supplied by the Africa Centres for Disease Control. The rollout comes amid an increase in cases in Gauteng and the Western Cape. The Department of Health is rolling out vaccinations against Mpox, amid a rise in cases. The vaccinations will target the most affected provinces: Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. The department received 10 500 doses of the mpox vaccine, Imvanex, as a donation from the Africa Centres for Disease Control to combat outbreaks on the continent. The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) authorised the importation of the vaccine through a Section 21 process, which covers the sale and use of medicines not yet registered in South Africa, said department spokesperson Foster Mohale. The rollout comes after two laboratory-confirmed cases were recorded in Gauteng and the Western Cape. The cumulative number of confirmed cases recorded this year is now 10. The two new cases include a 32-year-old from Cape Town and a 45-year-old from Johannesburg. Both of them had no travel history, said Mohale. 'Vaccination helps to control the spread of this preventable and manageable disease, with vaccinated individuals being protected from becoming infected and from developing severe complications. Vaccination can be accessed at some public health facilities, travel clinics, and private providers in the above-mentioned provinces,' he added. Mohale urged the public to be 'extra vigilant of mpox symptoms' and to consult their nearest health facility about vaccinations if they suspect they are at risk of mpox infection. 'Priority will be given to people at a higher risk of contracting the virus, including those who came into close contact with people who tested positive, people with multiple sexual partners and travellers going to areas where there is an outbreak of mpox. Where indicated, vaccination will be offered to pregnant women and children older than two years,' he said. He added that the National Control Laboratory had tested the vaccine to establish its safety and efficacy before its release on the South African market, and that it was found to be safe. Mohale said: As with any vaccine, some people may experience mild to moderate side effects after being vaccinated. This is a normal sign that the body is developing some level of immunity to prevent the severity of the disease if infected. 'Several countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Uganda, the United States, Canada and European countries, have utilised the mpox vaccine to control the spread of the disease,' Common side effects that might be experienced following immunisation include pain, redness, swelling and itching at the injection site; muscle pain; headache; nausea; and fever. However, most side effects disappear on their own within a few days without treatment. These side effects can be managed by having enough rest, staying hydrated and taking medication to manage pain, if needed. Mohale said the number of mpox vaccine doses allocated to South Africa was limited, and quantities would be issued in a phased approach, prioritising outbreak hotspots, and based on vaccine availability. News24 previously reported that, in February and March, seven cases were confirmed in Gauteng in two distinct clusters. While the first cluster could be traced to a patient with an international travel history, the second cluster showed no travel history or links to the first patient. The World Health Organisation's epidemic, preparedness and response team leader, Dr Joseph Wamala, added that more than 130 000 cases, with 300 deaths, had been reported across 131 countries. In February alone, 3 000 new cases were reported, with the majority of those from Africa. While this represents a month-on-month decrease of 18%, the drop could be due to conflict in the DRC disrupting testing, as well as the cancellation of funding to African countries.
