Chris Kamara's sadness as 'only five turn up' to Soccer Saturday reunion dinner

Daily Mirrora day ago

Many football fans still miss the old Sky Sports Soccer Saturday line-up, including Chris Kamara, who often tries to organise a get-together with his former colleagues
Beloved football pundit Chris Kamara was left disappointed after only five people turned up to his Soccer Saturday reunion. Kamara, 67, was one of the most popular pundits over the course of his 24 years on the show.
The former Sheffield United and Luton Town player provided all sorts of funny memories for the millions of people who tuned in. Three years on from walking away from the show, Kamara uploaded a photograph from their reunion.

In April last year, Kamara arranged another Soccer Saturday get together which was attended by Alan McInally, Tony Cottee, Jeff Stelling, Phil Thompson and a Sky Sports producer.

The Middlesbrough born pundit uploaded a picture of the 2025 reunion onto his social media pages. The producer was there again, as was Shreeves, Charlie Nicholas and Bianca Westwood.
Former Soccer Saturday pundits Thompson, Cottee, McInally, Paul Merson and Matt Le Tissier were nowhere to be seen on the day. It's likely that they had their reasons for not being able to attend.
Nevertheless, Kamara appeared to be disappointed with the turnout. Alongside the picture he posted, he wrote: "Soccer Saturday reunion dinner. Only five turned up. But still a fabulous night. Condo (producer), Champagne Charlie, Bianca and, of course, Unbelievable Jeff Stelling.'
He also added a crying face emoji to his post, suggesting he was rather sad with the low numbers. It's been close to five years since Sky shook up Soccer Saturday by overhauling their pundits.
Before the 2020/21 football season, Thompson, Nicholas and Le Tissier were sacked by the programme. Stelling, Camara and Merson were retained by the show, while the likes of Adebayo Akinfenwa, Tim Sherwood, Robbie Fowler and Joleon Lescott were brought in as replacements.

Kamara left the show in 2022 after being diagnosed with speech apraxia. While he did not return to Soccer Saturday, he did make a return to live football television on Boxing Day.
He appeared on Amazon Prime's live Premier League coverage, where he was reunited with Stelling, who stepped down from his position at Sky Sports in 2023 after 25 years.

In an interview with the Express, Kamara opened up about the sadness he felt when he walked away from Sky as a result of his condition, which slows down speech and thought processes.
He said: "After 20 plus years of being the first ever in-vision reporter at a live football match, it was with sadness when I realised that I was no longer able to do what I had always taken for granted - just be me.
"At that time, I could hardly talk, wasn't able to remember the players names and was slurring my words. I knew then that I had to get help.'

Chelsea battling Premier League rivals for Joao Pedro after bid rejected

Joao Pedro has thrived for Brighton in the Premier League since joining from Watford but the Seagulls face a tall order to keep hold of the Brazilian international Chelsea are battling it out with Newcastle to sign Brighton striker Joao Pedro. Newcastle have already had a £50m-plus bid turned down by Brighton who will not allow the Brazil international to go on the cheap. Chelsea are also keen and have held discussions over signing the 23-year-old who would add options and versatility to their forward line. That would raise serious question marks over the futures of Christopher Nkunku who has been heavily linked with Manchester United and also Nicolas Jackson. ‌ Jackson was sent off in the Club World Cup which means he has been serving a ban in two separate competitions after missing the end of the Premier League season after getting a red card. ‌ Brighton have rejected bids from two separate Premier League clubs with Liverpool and Arsenal also having been linked with the versatile forward who can play through the middle and wide. Chelsea have held discussions but are now pushing to get a deal done and it remains to be seen whether they can agree a deal. Chelsea have been very active in this window as they are still looking to get a deal done for Borussia Dortmund 's Jamie Gittens. Brighton signed Pedro from Watford in a deal worth around £30m in the summer of 2023 and will want to get a big profit. Pedro, who has scored 30 goals in 70 Albion appearances, is a long-term target of Newcastle as who were also keen in 2022. But now Newcastle face a fight on their hands with Chelsea and other Premier League clubs keen on the Brazilian. Pedro was banished from Fabian Hurzeler's squad for the final two Premier League matches of the season following an alleged training ground spat with Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke. Now his future could be elsewhere if anyone can meet Brighton's price. Earlier this month, Brighton boss Hurzeler suggested he expects to have Joao Pedro and Kaoru Mitoma back for pre-season training. Mitoma was the subject of interest from the Saudi Pro League last season but ended up staying put. ‌ "For sure. I'm really looking forward for both of them," the boss tols Sky Sports. "They're great players and they helped us a lot last season. They're expected to be back next week." Brighton have already spent big this summer, with Greek striker Charalampos Kostoulas joining from Olympiacos for around £30m. Tommy Watson and Diego Coppola have also completed moves, from Sunderland and Verona respectively. "I think they all have great potential. We keep doing our way, signing young players with big potential and trying to develop them," Hurzeler added. "That's what we'll try to do with these new signings and I'm sure they will make us better." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Crystal Palace set new price for Liverpool and Arsenal to sign Marc Guehi

Crystal Palace have reportedly set a new price tag for Marc Guehi as Liverpool step up their interest in the England star. Following their Premier League triumph, Liverpool have been splashing the cash this summer, bringing in Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong for just shy of £200million. They could yet sign a striker but their priority is to bring in a new centre-back with England U21 star Jarell Quansah set to join Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth £35m. The situation is somewhat pressing as Arne Slot only has three senior centre-backs, namely Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate, with the latter out of contract next summer and talks over a new deal not progressing. Guehi has emerged as their top target after captaining Palace to their best ever Premier League season and FA Cup glory in 2024/25 and, according to the Mirror, the Reds will open talks with the Eagles and the player this weekend. Arsenal are also interested in the 24-year-old who has entered the last 12 months of his contract and was the subject of big money bids from Newcastle and Tottenham last season The Magpies failed to meet Palace's £70m valuation last summer and while Spurs did, their offer came far too late in the January window to be considered. While it is said Guehi is willing to run down his deal if a prospective buyer does not guarantee regular first-team football, Palace do not wish to lose such a valuable asset on a free transfer. The report adds that Oliver Glasner's side still value the defender at £70m but know that no club will bid that given his contract situation. More Trending As a result they now want at least £40m but will hold out for as much as possible given that Chelsea have a 20 per cent sell-on clause in his contract. The Blues sold their academy graduate to Palace in 2021 for £18m and have been linked with re-signing him in the past, but their interest has cooled of late. If Guehi does move to Anfield his first game for his new club will, ironically, be against his old one, with Liverpool taking on Crystal Palace in the Community Shield on August 10. The south Londoners are also bracing themselves for Arsenal or Tottenham to make a bid for talisman Eberechi Eze, who has a £68million release clause.
